The inserted seats of the valves are provided with an annular rim which, when the seat is fitted into a bore in the cylinder head, presses against the wall of the cylinder head the heat shield. Application is to insulating the inner walls of a heat engine cylinder head or to creating hot points in the combustion chamber of the cylinder head.

Description

The present invention relates to means for simultaneously fixing and centering a heat shield usable in particular for the cylinder heads of an internal combustion engine fitted with a valve for controlling the transfer of gases in the combustion chamber of the engine.

In combustion engines of known type, the combustion chambers are generally delimited by the internal walls of a cylinder, by the face of a piston which moves in the cylinder under the combined effect of the pressure of the gases of the combustion chamber and the inertia of the mechanical drive means of the piston, and, respectively, by the internal walls of a cylinder closing cylinder head often constituting the hottest part of the envelope of the combustion chamber.

Other types of rotary combustion engine having a combustion chamber delimited by the surface of a rotary piston and by the walls of a cylinder head enveloping the rotary piston and in which the combustion of the combustible gas mixture always starts in the same zone without any gaseous cooling by the fresh combustible gases admitted into the combustion chamber.

To limit the damage caused by the overheating of the walls of the combustion chamber and in other cases, in particular in diesel engines, to benefit from the effect of distillation and vaporization of the liquid fuel by the overheated walls, already proposed to cover some of the walls of the combustion chamber of heat engines with a heat shield which protects the metal of the wall from overheating and respectively in other cases, thanks to its relative thermal insulating properties, is overheated locally to vaporize the liquid fuel injected into the combustion chamber and trigger its ignition.

The materials most frequently used for these heat shields are ceramics consisting for example of zirconium oxides, nitrides or silicon carbides and produced by sintering after cold or hot pressing. Other materials used for these heat shields are refractories and / or alloys which are weakly conductive and which have good resistance to thermal shock to withstand significant surface overheating and renewed at each combustion cycle.

Fixing these screens is difficult due, on the one hand, to their coefficient of expansion, which is often different from that of the material of the element to be protected, and, on the other hand, to the large temperature gradients prevailing in the combustion chamber. The anchors usually made for these fasteners do not take account of the relative variations in dimensions between the screen and the element, which generally results in cracks followed by the destruction of the screen or of the element to be protected. In addition, the anchors must be close enough, since the screens have relatively thin walls and tend to vibrate, which causes additional mechanical stresses.

Document US-A-4,046,114 describes a device for fixing a heat shield intended in particular to protect the face of the cylinder head constituting one of the walls of the combustion chamber of the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, the Gas transfer is controlled by seat valves fitted in the cylinder head. The device consists of an injector pipe, the end of which is flared by pushing back, thereby fixing the pinched heat shield between the cylinder head and the cylinder liner.

Document DE-A-2,844,923 relates to the fixing of a thermal protection ring on the wall of a cylinder head by means of an annular peripheral rim with which the valve seats are provided.

One of the aims of the present invention is precisely to overcome the defects and requirements of the heat shields mentioned above for the combustion chambers.

To this end, the invention provides a device for simultaneously fixing and centering a heat shield, in which at least one of the attached valve seats is provided with an annular peripheral rim which, when the seat is fitted in its cylinder head bore, presses against the wall of the cylinder head, the heat shield which is also pinched between the cylinder head and the cylinder liner via the cylinder head gasket interposed between the cylinders and the cylinder head.

According to an essential feature of the invention, the contact between the annular rim of the valve seat and the screen is effected by means of at least a couple of two conjugate conical surfaces, formed respectively on the rim of the seat and on the screen so as to center the screen on the seat and make up for the play existing between the seat and the screen.

Thanks to this relatively simple and economical fixing means, the screen made up of a thin flexible plate is clamped in relatively close areas of the intake and exhaust valves, which makes it possible to suppress or reduce the vibrations which could arise. at certain engine rotation speeds exciting the natural frequencies of vibration of the flexible plate. In addition, the precision of fixing of the plate and its centering remain relatively favorable taking into account the precision of fixing of the valve seats in the cylinder head. The plate constituting the screen can perfectly match the shape of the walls of the combustion chamber while retaining the possibility of expanding relative to the valve seats and to the edge of the cylinder liner.

Modern combustion engines have tooth at least one intake valve and one exhaust valve which, in diesel engines in particular, are often aligned in the center of the cylinder and along the general axis of the engine, the two attached valve seats fix the screen along a fixing line leaving on both sides possibilities of expansion on the screen. When the cylinder head is mounted on the engine block of the engine cylinders, the heat shield is held in position by the valve seats and is applied to the cylinder head gasket.

In the most practical embodiment of the invention, a separate heat shield is provided for each cylinder of the engine and is applied between the cylinder head and the jacket of each cylinder.

Other objects, advantages and characteristics of the invention will appear on reading the following description of a non-limiting embodiment of the invention made with reference to the appended drawing, where the single figure represents in section, with cut-outs strictly limiting the view to this part, the combustion chamber of the cylinder of an internal combustion engine of the diesel type equipped with a heat shield fixed according to the invention before the installation of the valves.

The combustion chamber shown in the figure and corresponding to the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, is delimited by the jacket 1 of the cylinder, by the movable piston inside this cylinder and not shown, and respectively by the cylinder head 2 of the engine in bores 3 and 4 of which are fitted by hard fitting of the seats of intake and exhaust valves 6. A heat shield 7 consisting of a thin plate made of a suitable material such as refractory ceramic and / or relatively heat insulating is fixed according to the invention by pressing an annular peripheral rim 8 of the valve seats 5 and 6 which presses the screen 7 on the relatively flat wall of the part of the combustion chamber defined by the cylinder head 2. To complete the fixing of the screen 7, the cylinder head gasket 9 interposed between the cylinder head 2 and the upper face 10 of the liner 1 elastically pinches the thermal screen on its periphery. The connection between the body of the valve seat 5 and 6 and the flange 8 has a conical surface 11 which cooperates with a conjugate conical surface 12 formed on the bore of the screen 7 traversed by the valve seat to properly center the screen 7 on the corresponding seat 5 or 6 and make up for the inevitable clearances existing between the bore of the screen 7 and the external surface of the valve seat which passes through this bore.

It can also be seen that the screen 7 has a countersink 13 in which the flange 8 is housed and whose annular bottom wall 14 serves as a stop for the corresponding valve seat 5 or 6.

In the arrangement shown in the figure, the intake and exhaust valves are aligned transversely along an axis line passing through the longitudinal axis 15 of the cylinder and through the general axis of the line of the engine cylinders. The screen covers a reduced surface of the cylinder head wall in the central axial part thereof which is in fact covered by the cylinder valves. On the other hand, larger surfaces of the cylinder head are covered by the screen 7 beyond this axial part of the cylinder head appearing in the section plane of the figure.

The mounting of the heat shield 7 is carried out as follows: the shield 7 is placed in position in the cylinder head before the fitting of the valve seats 5 and 6 in their corresponding bores 3 and 4. The valve seats 5 and 6 are then force fitted into their bore to tighten the screen 7 by their flange 8 and center it by their conical surface 11. The screen and the valve seats being mounted, it is then possible to fully equip the cylinder head 2 in particular by installing the valves and their return springs there. The fixing of the screens 7 is then completed when the cylinder head 2 is tightened on the engine block surrounding the liners 1 because the edges of the screen 7 come to bear on the cylinder head gasket 9 which is relatively elastic and which allows these edges to move. of the screen under the effect of the temperature variations of the screen 7 and the differential expansions between the jacket 1, the cylinder head gasket 9 and the heat screen 7.
