- the other end of the bar 31 is hingedly connected by a rivet 35 to the end plate 32, which end plate 32 extends next to the lock case 5 and hooks with a groove 36 over a gudgeon 37 which is fast on the night bolt 3, and through a slot 38 in the side wall of lock case 5, projects outside said lock case.
- the bar 31 is twisted over 90° in such a way that but the ends of said bar 31 extend in parallel relationship with the side walls of the lock case 19, but the remaining portion of said bar 31 extends cross-wise thereto and thus in parallel relationship with the pivot axis 25.
- the cylinder lock device 12 extends cross-wise through the end plates 32, said end plate 32 being provided with an oblong recess 39 for this cylinder lock device and being alternately slidable over said device 12 during the pivoting of said night bolt 3.
- the transmission between the night bolt 24 of the uppermost auxiliary lock 2 and the night bolt 3 of the main lock 1 is similar in structure to the above-described transmission and similar components are designated by the same reference numerals but with a '.
- Said latter transmission differs from the above-described transmission but in the bar 31' being twisted over the whole length thereof, while the end plate 32' extends mainly on the top side of the gudgeon 37 and consequently does not surround the cylinder lock device 12 but actually the latch device 11.
- Said end plate 32' then also differs somewhat in the length thereof, while the recess 39' for the latch device 11 differs in shape from the recess 39 for the cylinder lock device 12.
- the auxiliary locks 2 are first arranged before mounting the main slot 1.
- the small end plate 32 or 32' is first fitted with the bar 31 or 31' connected thereto in the section 8, through the opening which is provided for the lock case 19.
- the front plates 20 are fastened temporarily with the screws 21 without however tightening said screws.
- Both small end plates 32 and 32' are accurately located next to one another opposite the opening 7 for the lock case 5 and through said opening the lock case 5 is now set in position whereby care is taken to slide the gudgeon 37 into the grooves 36 and 36' from said end plates 32 and 32'.
- the opening 7 in the section 8 for fitting said lock case 5 is provided with a small projection for the projecting gudgeon 37.
- the lock case 5 is secured to section 8 by tightening the screws 9 and the lock cases 19 are blocked at the suitable spacing from the lock case 5 by tightening the screws 21.
- the lock cases 14 and 29 are naturally also mounted on section 13 and the cylinder lock device 12 on the lock case 5.
- the cylinder lock device 12 When now by means of a key the cylinder lock device 12 is so operated as to pivot the night bolt 3, the night bolt 24 from the auxiliary locks 2 also pivots automatically in the same direction and to the same extent.
- the pivoting of the night bolt 3 is limited by the operating device of said same bolt, while the pivoting of the night bolts 24 is limited due to the recess 34 in the side wall of lock case 19 through which projects said gudgeon 33, being limited in the size thereof.
- the night bolts 24 When the night bolts 24 lie together with the night bolt 3 in the closing position, said night bolts 24 cannot be pivoted separately back upwards to the open position thereof.
- the bar 31 pertaining thereto When trying to pivot upwards the night bolt 24 from the lowermost auxiliary lock 2, the bar 31 pertaining thereto is urged by pulling in such a way that even a relatively light bar 31 can prevent any tumbling of said night bolt 24 when the night bolt 3 does not also pivot together.
- the bar 31' pertaining thereto When trying to pivot upwards the night bolt 24 from the uppermost auxiliary lock 2, the bar 31' pertaining thereto is urged by pushing. Due to said bar 31' being twisted over the whole length thereof, it is actually somewhat resiliently bendable when arranging said bar in section 8, but it is still rigid enough not to buckle under such a pushing stress.
- the above-described closure thus insures a very good protection. Still the structure thereof is relatively simple.
- the main lock may easily be obtained from a known lock which is used without auxiliary locks, such as for example a lock as described in the above-mentioned Belgian Patent 871.213 in the name of the Applicant. It is only required to mount a gudgeon 37 on the night bolt 3 and to provide a slot 38 for said gudgeon in the side wall of the lock case 5.
- the main lock from the above-described closure may also be used alone without the transmissions and the auxiliary locks.
- the auxiliary locks 2 do not have any operating member which may be operated from the outside with a key member, but they are operated by the cylinder lock device 12 which operates the night bolt 3 from the main lock 1.
- the operation of the above-described closure is then also very easy and fast. With a single key movement it is possible to bring simultaneously all of the night bolts in or out the closing position.
- the closure does not have to be necessarily mounted on an aluminium door. It may also be mounted in a wooden door.
- the closure does not have either to be fitted with two auxiliary locks. It may also be designed with but one auxiliary lock.
- the bars from the transmission or drives may possibly be adjustable in the length.
- the night bolt does not have necessarily to be shaped as shown in the accompanying figures. Said night bolts may also for example be hook- shaped, in which case the closure may also be used with sliding doors or sliding windows.
- the operating device of the main lock does naturally not have to be a cylinder lock device. It may be any lock device operatable from the outside with a removable key member, which can bring the night bolt in and out the closing position.

Abstract
Description
- This invention relates to a closure which comprises a main lock, which main lock comprises a lock case, a night bolt movably mounted inside the lock case which may project outside said case and an operating device to be controlled by a removable key member for operating the night bolt, which closure also comprises at least one auxiliary lock, which auxiliary lock comprises a pivoting night bolt, which closure further comprises a mechanical drive connecting the night bolt of the auxiliary lock to the night bolt of the main lock in such mannerthat when the night bolt of the main lock moves from open to closing position or reversely the night bolt of the auxiliary lock moves also from open to closing position or reversely, the drive being hingedly connected to the pivoting night bolt of the auxiliary lock about a hinge axis in parallel relationship with the pivoting axis thereof and arranged eccentrically relative thereto.
- Such closures give naturally more safety and a better closure than closures which comprise but one lock and consequently but one night bolt. The closure does generally comprise two auxiliary locks, one above and one below the main lock.
- A closure of this kind is known from FR-E-7 235. In the closure according to figure 1 of this publication, the night bolt of the main lock is a linearly slidable bolt. The mechanical drive between this bolt and the bolt of each auxiliary lock comprises a bar which is hingedly connected to the pivoting bolt of the auxiliary lock. A gudgeon on this bar cooperates with a lever which is operated in turn by the slidable bolt. When the night bolt of the main lock projects outside its lock case, it causes the pivoting of the lever which in turn pushes the bar upwards causing the pivoting of the bolts of the auxiliary locks. These bolts return to their open position by gravity force as soon as the bolt of the main lock has returned to its open position and does no longer retain the lever in its pivoted position.
- There is no direct contact between the drive bar and the sliding bolt of the main lock and such contact is not possible as the pivoting bolts of the auxiliary locks and the lever are mounted on the fixed door frame while the bolt of the main lock is slidable in a lock case mounted on the pivoting door.
- The fact the mechanical drive comprises a lever complicates the manufacturing and mounting of the closure. Each time the lever pivots to its pivoted position, the gudgeon on the bar is subjected to great wear.
- The fact a part of the closing is mounted on the door frame and another part is mounted on the door complicates the mounting of the closing.
- The slidable bolt of the main lock cannot project very far outside its lock case and the lever with which this bolt cooperates can be damaged or broken.
- The main lock does not comprise a day bolt and a latch device and the closure can only be operated by the key member.
- The invention has for object to obviate all of the above drawbacks and to provide a closure which is very safe, but is also of simple structure, mounting and operation.
- For this purpose, the night bolt of the main lock is a pivoting bolt pivotably mounted inside the lock case, the main lock comprises a day bolt movably mounted in the lock case, which day bolt may project outside the lock case and a latch device for operating the day bolt, the auxiliary lock comprises a lock case wherein its pivoting night bolt is pivotably mounted, and the drive which is hingedly connected with one end thereof directly to the night bolt of the auxiliary lock, is provided at the other end thereof with a groove extending crosswise to its moving direction and receiving a gudgeon mounted on the bolt of the main lock.
- The groove and gudgeon connection ensures an easy mounting of the mechanical drive and an easy connecting of it to the night bolt of the main lock. The gudgeon does however not slide in the groove during the movement of the drive.
- A lock having a day bolt and a pivoting night bolt is known as such from EP-A-10 684 but this publication does not describe any closure with auxiliary locks.
- A closure which comprises a main lock having a day bolt and a night bolt, as well as two auxiliary locks having a night bolt is disclosed in FR-E--7 235 (figures 2 to 5). In the closure according to these figures 2 to 5, all night bolts are however lineary slidable. The mechanical drive comprises a bar and L-shaped levers connecting the bar to the night bolt of the main lock and to the night bolt of each auxiliary lock. Each lever is pivotably connected at its top to the corresponding lock case, the end of one arm being slipped with a slot over a gudgeon on the bar and the end of the other arm being slipped with a slot over a gudgeon on the night bolt.
- In the closure according to figure 6 of FR-E-7 235 the linear displacement of the bar is transformed in a linear sliding of the night bolts by means of a slanted slot in a plate mounted on each bolt, through which slot extends a gudgeon on the bar. The construction is more simple than with pivoting levers but it is still necessary to fasten a plate with a slanted slot to the bolt. Also the gudgeons slide in the slots when the bar is displaced causing a great wear of the gudgeons and the plates.
- The closure according to GB-A-2 051 214 also comprises a main lock having a day bolt and a night bolt and two auxiliary locks having a night bolt, but all night bolts are slidable bolts. The mechanical drive of this closure comprises a bar provided with gudgeons cooperating with levers, two of these levers cooperating in turn by means of a gudgeon and slot connection with the lineary slidable night bolts of the two auxiliary locks, the third lever being connected to the latch device. Two operations have to be performed to bring all of the night bolts of the closure in closing position, namely the swinging with the latch of the latch device and the operating with a key of the operating device of the night bolt of the main lock. To bring all of the night bolts back to the open position also, both said operations have to be performed, but in the reversed sequence. The use of such a closure is then also anything but simple.
- Moreover, in this known closure, the latch device has to be operatable on both sides of the door. When the door is an outer door, a swinging latch has also to be present on the outer side, which is frequently not desirable for outer doors.
- Moreover the latch device has to be of a special structure to be able to operate in the above-described way both the day bolt of the main lock and through said drive, the night bolts of the auxiliary locks. The drive or transmission may for example not be coupled to an existing main lock which is designed to be used without auxiliary locks.
- The bar which is part of the drive between the main lock and the auxiliary locks may also undergo a very high stress when one tries to rotate the latch when the night bolt of the main lock is in closing position. Said bar thus has also to be designed relatively heavy.
- In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the drive between two night bolts comprises a bar and an end plate hingedly connected thereto, which end plate is provided with said groove.
- Other details and advantages of the invention will stand out from the following description of a closure according to the invention; this description is only given by way of example and does not limit the invention; the reference numerals pertain to the accompanying drawings.
- Figure 1 is a front view partly in section of part of a door wherein a closure according to the invention is mounted.
- Figure 2 is a section along line II-II from figure 1.
- Figure 3 is a section along line III-III from figure 1, but drawn on a larger scale.
- Figure 4 is a section along line IV-IV from figure 1, drawn on the same scale as figure 3.
- In the various figures, the same reference numerals pertain to the same elements.
- The closure according to the figures is mounted into an aluminium door of a structure known per se, only that part of which the closure is mounted on being shown in the figures.
- Said closure comprises mainly three locks, namely a
main lock 1 in the usual location, and twoauxiliary locks 2, respectively at the top and the bottom of the door. - The
main lock 1 is of the type with pivotingnight bolt 3. Such locks are known per se, notably from DE-A-871 413. Saidmain lock 1 will thus be described hereinbelow only as far as required to make the invention clear. - The
night bolt 3 rotatably surrounds thepivot axis 4 which is mounted between the two side walls of alock case 5. Saidlock case 5 is recessed into anupright section 8 of the door leaf frame and extends to anopening 7 in that side of saidsection 8 lying on the door leaf edge. On the outer side thelock case 5 is closed by afront plate 6 which is secured with the projecting ends thereof and by means of.small screws 9, against said latter side ofsection 8. - Inside said
lock case 5 is mounted in the usual way aday bolt 10, which can project through an opening in thefront plate 6. Saidday bolt 10 is operated in a way known per se from the outside both bylatch device 11 and by a key-operatedcylinder lock device 12. For clearness sake, the latch of saidlatch device 11 has not been shown in the figures. - The
night bolt 3 is also operated in a way known per se by thecylinder lock device 12. - Opposite the
main lock 1, alock plate 14 provided with anopening 15 for theday bolt 10 and anopening 16 for thenight bolt 3, is secured withscrews 17 to anupright section 13 of the fixed door frame. As it appears mostly from figures 1 and 3, the night bolt in down-tilted closing position enters thesection 13 which is thus also provided in the outer side thereof with asuitable opening 18 for saidbolt 3. - Both
auxiliary locks 2 are identical, in such a way that for simplifying but thatauxiliary lock 2 located belowmain lock 1 has been shown in the figures. - Each
auxiliary lock 2 also comprises as themain lock 1, alock case 19 mounted inside saidsection 8, which case is closed on the outer side ofsection 8, by anoblong front plate 20 which is secured with the ends thereof and by means ofscrews 21, in such a way that sliding offront plate 20 is possible over a short distance along the lengthwise direction of saidsection 8. Eachscrew 21 fastens therefore thefront plate 20 againstsection 8 through the agency of a smallsquare plate 22 wherein the screw head is recessed, which small plate slidingly enters anoblong recess 23 in saidfront plate 20. The opening in thefront plate 20 for the shaft of each screw is also oblong in shape, in such a way that as long as thescrews 21 are not tightened, thefront plate 20 and thus thecomplete lock case 19 may be moved relative to thescrews 21 and thus relative to saidsection 8, over a short distance. - Inside each
lock case 19, anight bolt 24 is pivotally mounted about a pivot axis 25. Said pivotingnight bolt 24 can pivot through an opening 26 in thefront plate 20, outside thelock case 19 and thereby enter thesection 13 through a suitable opening 27 in alock plate 29 mounted withscrews 28 on saidsection 13, and through anopening 30. - For practical reasons, the
night bolt 24 is identical with thenight bolt 3 of themain lock 1, in such a way that it is also provided with the recesses and projections which are required on saidnight bolt 3 for the operation thereof by thelock device 12 and for limiting the pivoting thereof. Thenight bolt 24 may however differ in shape from thenight bolt 3. - The operating device for the pivoting of a
night bolt 24 is formed by a mechanical drive or transmission between saidnight bolt 24 and thenight bolt 3 of themain lock 1, which results when operating with a key thecylinder lock device 12 and said device bringing the night bolt in or out locking position, in bringing simultaneously also thenight bolt 24 in or out the locking position. - The transmission between the
night bolt 24 of the lowermostauxiliary lock 2 and thenight bolt 3 of themain lock 1 is comprised of two parts, namely abar 31 and anend plate 32. - The
bar 31 rotatingly surrounds with the one end thereof, on the outer side of thelock case 19, a gudgeon 33 which is fast eccentrically relative to the pivot axis 25, on thenight bolt 24 and through arecess 34 in one side wall of thelock case 19, projects outside said lock case. The other end of thebar 31 is hingedly connected by arivet 35 to theend plate 32, whichend plate 32 extends next to thelock case 5 and hooks with a groove 36 over agudgeon 37 which is fast on thenight bolt 3, and through aslot 38 in the side wall oflock case 5, projects outside said lock case. - Next to each end thereof the
bar 31 is twisted over 90° in such a way that but the ends of saidbar 31 extend in parallel relationship with the side walls of thelock case 19, but the remaining portion of saidbar 31 extends cross-wise thereto and thus in parallel relationship with the pivot axis 25. - The
cylinder lock device 12 extends cross-wise through theend plates 32, saidend plate 32 being provided with anoblong recess 39 for this cylinder lock device and being alternately slidable over saiddevice 12 during the pivoting of saidnight bolt 3. - The transmission between the
night bolt 24 of the uppermostauxiliary lock 2 and thenight bolt 3 of themain lock 1 is similar in structure to the above-described transmission and similar components are designated by the same reference numerals but with a '. Said latter transmission differs from the above-described transmission but in the bar 31' being twisted over the whole length thereof, while the end plate 32' extends mainly on the top side of thegudgeon 37 and consequently does not surround thecylinder lock device 12 but actually thelatch device 11. Said end plate 32' then also differs somewhat in the length thereof, while the recess 39' for thelatch device 11 differs in shape from therecess 39 for thecylinder lock device 12. The lowermost end of said end plate 32' overlaps the uppermost end of theend plate 32 and the grooves 36 and 36' in said end plates lie accurately facing one another. Said grooves 36 and 36' both open on that edge lying on the side of the front plate, of theend plates 32 and 32'. With the groove 36 or 36' thereof bothend plates 32 and 32' are slipped over one and thesame gudgeon 37. Saidgudgeon 37 is provided as well as gudgeon 33 with an overthick head in such a way that theend plates 32 and 32' cannot slide sidewise off saidgudgeon 37. - To mount the closure, the
auxiliary locks 2 are first arranged before mounting themain slot 1. For this purpose thesmall end plate 32 or 32' is first fitted with thebar 31 or 31' connected thereto in thesection 8, through the opening which is provided for thelock case 19. Such fitting is easily possible due to thebar 31 or 31' being somewhat resiliently bendable due to the particular twisting thereof. Thefront plates 20 are fastened temporarily with thescrews 21 without however tightening said screws. Bothsmall end plates 32 and 32' are accurately located next to one another opposite theopening 7 for thelock case 5 and through said opening thelock case 5 is now set in position whereby care is taken to slide thegudgeon 37 into the grooves 36 and 36' from saidend plates 32 and 32'. Theopening 7 in thesection 8 for fitting saidlock case 5 is provided with a small projection for the projectinggudgeon 37. Thelock case 5 is secured tosection 8 by tightening thescrews 9 and thelock cases 19 are blocked at the suitable spacing from thelock case 5 by tightening thescrews 21. Thelock cases section 13 and thecylinder lock device 12 on thelock case 5. - When now by means of a key the
cylinder lock device 12 is so operated as to pivot thenight bolt 3, thenight bolt 24 from theauxiliary locks 2 also pivots automatically in the same direction and to the same extent. The pivoting of thenight bolt 3 is limited by the operating device of said same bolt, while the pivoting of thenight bolts 24 is limited due to therecess 34 in the side wall oflock case 19 through which projects said gudgeon 33, being limited in the size thereof. - When the
night bolts 24 lie together with thenight bolt 3 in the closing position, saidnight bolts 24 cannot be pivoted separately back upwards to the open position thereof. When trying to pivot upwards thenight bolt 24 from the lowermostauxiliary lock 2, thebar 31 pertaining thereto is urged by pulling in such a way that even a relativelylight bar 31 can prevent any tumbling of saidnight bolt 24 when thenight bolt 3 does not also pivot together. When trying to pivot upwards thenight bolt 24 from the uppermostauxiliary lock 2, the bar 31' pertaining thereto is urged by pushing. Due to said bar 31' being twisted over the whole length thereof, it is actually somewhat resiliently bendable when arranging said bar insection 8, but it is still rigid enough not to buckle under such a pushing stress. - The above-described closure thus insures a very good protection. Still the structure thereof is relatively simple. The main lock may easily be obtained from a known lock which is used without auxiliary locks, such as for example a lock as described in the above-mentioned Belgian Patent 871.213 in the name of the Applicant. It is only required to mount a
gudgeon 37 on thenight bolt 3 and to provide aslot 38 for said gudgeon in the side wall of thelock case 5. The main lock from the above-described closure may also be used alone without the transmissions and the auxiliary locks. - The
auxiliary locks 2 do not have any operating member which may be operated from the outside with a key member, but they are operated by thecylinder lock device 12 which operates thenight bolt 3 from themain lock 1. The operation of the above-described closure is then also very easy and fast. With a single key movement it is possible to bring simultaneously all of the night bolts in or out the closing position. - The invention is in no way limited to the above embodiment and within the scope of the patent application, many changes may be brought to the described embodiment, notably as regards the shape, composition, arrangement and number of the components which are used for the embodying.
- Particularly the closure does not have to be necessarily mounted on an aluminium door.
