Die Scheiben kleinen Außendurchmessers können aus dem gleichen Material wie die Scheiben großen Außendurchmesser sein, sie können aber auch aus weniger kompressiblem Material bestehen. Im letzteren Fall wird mit einer geringeren Anzahl kleiner Scheiben eine bestimmte Kompression erreicht. Die Scheiben geringerer Kompressibilität können aus steifem Material, insbesondere Stahl, bestehen.
