Definitions

  • This invention relates to a tilting frame which compises a frame, a leaf tiltingly mounted about a hinge axis on said frame, and a locking means which is mounted between frame and leaf sides opposite said hinge axis, said locking means comprising two arms which are joined together with the one end thereof to be hingeable over somewhat more than 180° and are at least swingable between a swung-shut position wherein they lie next to one another, and a swung-open position wherein said arms as considered in the opening direction, lie right beyond the extension of each other, a handle which is mounted adjacent the hinge connection of said arms, on one arm, and two fastening structures by means of which the other arm ends are hingedly fastened about axes at right angle to the hinge axis between said leaf and frame, respectively to the leaf and the frame, whereby the spacing between each one of said latter axes and the hinge axis between the arms is approximately equal at least in the swung-shut position of said arms, in such a way that in the s
  • tilt frame there should be understood here any frame which comprises a fixed frame and a leaf which is swingable about a horizontal axis relative to said frame, whether said leaf is hingedly fastened to said frame at the top, the bottom or the middle.
  • the locking means is usually mounted on the frame inner side, whereby thus the leaf tilts open outwards.
  • the locking means retains the tiltable leaf fixed either in the open position with the locking means arms thus lying substantially in the extension of one anther, or in the closed position, whereby the arms are foiled together.
  • both arms from the locking means are hinged relative to one another about an axis which runs in parallel relationship with the hinge axis between leaf and frame.
  • the arms When tilting open or shut the leaf, the arms then also hinge relative to one anther in a vertical plane.
  • said arms extend adjacent to one another in the closed position.
  • the one arm forms an U-shaped through wherein then lies the other arm in the swung-shut position.
  • the swung-shut arms are directed inwards and thus project relatively markedly relative to the fixed frame. Not only this is not very aesthetic, but also the projecting arms strongly obstruct the location of goods on the window board.
  • the locking means arms are further swingable by means of the connecting structures, relative to the frame and the leaf about axes which lie at right angle to the hinge axis between the leaf and frame and which in swung-shut position of the arms, lie substantially in the extension of one another. It is also intended that after the swinging shut of both arms, the arms projecting frontwards will further swing about said latter axes lying substantially in the extension of one another, which axes lie substantially vertically in such swung-shut po- ètion of the arms.
  • the swung-shut arms should thus be swung sideways in a horizontal plane until they extend together along the fixed frame.
  • the closing frce is thereby also lost.
  • For the swinging shut of the arms it is possible by selecting suitable spacings between the hinge axes to insure that the arm connected to the leaf, will pull said leaf very strongly against the fixed frame.
  • said arms cannot exert any pulling force any more and the leaf is then only retained shut due to the arm connected to the leaf coming to lie on that side removed from the leaf of part of the other arm, for example thus inside the trough formed by said arm.
  • a positive pushing away of that arm connected to the leaf from the other arm does not occur any more also.
  • the invention has for object to obviate said drawbacks and to provide a tilting frame whereby the locking means in completely shut position projects but little inwards, but nonetheless still pulls in this position the leaf with a strong closing force against the frame.
  • one of the arms from the locking means comprises a part which during the common swinging of both swung-shut arms relative to the closed leaf and the frame, cooperates with a part from the fastening structure connected to the other arm, whereby at least one of the cooperating parts runs eccentrically relative to the substantially coinciding rotation axes of the arms during said swinging, in such a way that for said swinging, said arm and said fastening structure are somewhat moved away from one another in a direction cross-wise to the frame, in such a way that the leaf is clamped thereby against the frame.
  • the arm connected to the leaf comprises a part which for the common swiping of the swung-shut arms slides on that side removed from the leaf of a part of the fastening structure mounted on the frame.
  • that part running eccentrically from said cooperating parts is a part from that fastening structure which comprises the one cooperating part.
  • eccentrically-running part is then mounted on the very hinge axis about which during said common swinging of the arms, that arm connected to the fastening structure hinges about an axis at right angle to the hinge axis between said leaf and frame.
  • one of the cooperating parts from the one arm and the fastening structure connected to the other arm is adjustable relative to the other part.
  • the adjustable part is then a screw.
  • both arms from the locking means are swingable relative to one another about an axis at right angle to the hinge axis between the leaf and frame, and which at least in the swung-shut position of said arms, that is thus also in the swung-shut position of the leaf, runs substantially in parallel relationship with the substantially coinciding hinge axes about which said swung-shut arms can be swung jointly, while said common swinging of the swung- shutarms is possible over substantially 180° and said cooperating of one part from the one arm and a part from the fastening structure, the other arm is connected to, occurs during said swinging over substantially 180 0 and at least at the end of said swinging as it follows the swinging shut of said arms.
  • the complete closing or opening of the locking means can be caused by a movement of the handle which does not change direction but describes continuously an arc of about 270° in a substantially horizortal plane.
  • the swinging shut proper of the arms occurs due to the handle moving over an arc of about 90° in a vertical plane, while then the joint swinging of both arms occurs due to moving the handle over an arc of about 180° in a horizontal plane.
  • Such requirement of changing the movement direction of the handle can be the cause that someone who does not know well such locking means cannot open or suitably close the tilting frame.
  • the invention further relates to a locking means which is particularly designed to be used with a tilting frame as defined in any one of the above-described embodiments.
  • the tilting frame as shown in the figures comprises in the usual way, a fixed rectangular frame 1 and a tiltable leaf 2 which is fastened by means of two hinges 3 to the top side of said fixed frame 1.
  • the tilting frame is so mounted inside a wall that the hinges 3 lie on the outer side and thus the leaf 2 swings open outwards.
  • Said fixed frame 1 and leaf 2 are made from aluminium sections which in the usual way are so adapted to one another that on the outer side the leaf 2 connects with a rim, projecting inside the frame opening, from said fixed frame 1 and on the outer side a rim, projecting towards said fixed frame, from leaf 2 connects with the outer side of said fixed frame 1.
  • a locking means 4 is mounted between the lowermost section of the fixed frame 1 and the lowermost section of said leaf 2.
  • Said locking means 4 comprises two arms 5 and 6 which are rotatingly connected together by means of a hinge axis 7.
  • Arm 5 is a flat batten from aluminium to which said hinge axis 7 is positively rivetted.
  • Said hinge axis 7 lies at right angle to the plane of arm 5.
  • Said arm 6 is also a batten which may possibly be somewhat wider than arm 5 and further be provided with a flange 6',which extends on the side of arm 5, over the whole length and on that end of arm 6 removed from hinge axis 7.
  • Said flange 6' forms a stop which limits the rotation of both arms 5 and 6 about hinge axis 7 relative to one another in the one as well as in the other direction.
  • the arm 6 lies above arm 5 and is freely rotatable with the one end thereof about hinge axis 7.
  • Said hinge axis 7 projects somewhat above arm 6 on the outer side.
  • a knob 8 is rotatingly but not Slidingly dipped.
  • Said knob 8 forms a handle for operating said locking means 4.
  • the locking means 4 further comprises two fastening structures by means of which those ends removed from hinge axis 7 of arms 5 and 6 are hingedly fastened respectively to fixed frame 1 and leaf 2. That fastening structure said arm 5 is connected to, is a L-shaped part 9.
  • the one leg from said part 9 is positively made fast by means of two screws 10 to that side facing inwards of the lowermost section from said fixed frame 1.
  • the other leg from said part 9 projects horizontally outside frame 1, at the level of the frame 1 opening.
  • overthickness 13 which is eccentric rela- ti v e to the geometrical axis of hinge pin 11.
  • Said overthickness 13 is in the shape of a round disc the center of which is thus displaced eccentrically and slan- tingly from fixed frame 1 relative to the geometrical axis of hinge pin 11 and actually in such a way that the eccentricity is maximized and thus the outer side from overthickness 13 lies farthest away from the geometrical axis of pin 11 in a direction which lies at an angle of about 225° to the lengthwise direction of the lowermost section from fixed frame 1.
  • the round overthickness 13 is further surrounded by a ring-14 which is clipped to be freely rotatable but not removable on said overthickness.
  • Said arm 6 is provided adjacent that end thereof removed from hinge axis 7, with a groove 15 on the bottom side thereof, said groove opening on that edge of arm 6 facing flange 6'. By means of said groove 15, the arm 6 can be slid over the outwardly-projecting head firmed by overthickness 13 and ring 14, during the swinging shut of arms 5 and 6.
  • the groove 15 widens towards that edge removed from flange 6'.
  • the geometrical axis from hinge pin 11 runs in parallel relationship with the geometrical axis from hinge axis 7, that is thus vertically and in parallel relationship with fixed frame 1.
  • Leaf 2 to the contrary is vertical only in closed position, in such a way that during the swinging open and shut of leaf 2, that arm connected to said leaf 2 should also be hingeable about a horizontal axis relative to leaf 2.
  • That fastening structure with which arm 6 is connected to leaf 2 is then also comprised of two parts 17 and 18 which are swingably connected together about a horizontal axis 16.
  • Part 17 is a rod which extends horizontally, that is thus along the lengthwise direction of the lowermost section from leaf 2 and is positively fastened with two screws 19 to the inner side from said section.
  • the horizontal axis is formed by two journals which stand on each end of said rod-like part 17.
  • Part 18 is formed by a plate 20 which bears on the bottom two rims 21. On that side removed from leaf 2, said plate 20 has a rim in the shape of a radiused corner in such a way that plate 20 is substantially equal in shape and size to the horizontal leg of part 9.
  • Both rims 21 are not only at right angle to plate 20 but are also directed cITEs-wise to the lengthwise direction of the lowermost section from fixed frame 1.
  • Part 18 is so mounted on part 17 that both rims 21 lie next to both ends of rod-like part 17. Said rims 21 are rotatable on those journals standing on both ends of part 17, which form said horizontal axis 16. That backmost rim facing leaf 2 from plate 20 and the rims 21 are bevelled to avoid hampering the swinging of part 18 about axis 16.
  • hinge pin 22 that end removed from hinge axis 7 of arm 6 is hingedly connected to part 18 through a hinge pin 22 which is made fast with one end in plate 20.
  • Said hinge pin 22 projects downwards outside plate 20, lies at right angle to said plate 20 and is rotatable with an oversized head in that part of arm 6 lying next to flange 6' and forming the bottom of groove 15.
  • a small ring 25 from nylon lies round hinge pin 22.
  • the geometrical axis from hinge pin 22 also lies at right angle to arm 6. As during the swinging open the lowermost rim of leaf 2 describes an arc the center of which lies on the axes from hinges 3, the locking means has to tilt somewhat during the swinging open.
  • arm 6 which tilts somewhat during the swinging open thereof, which is possible due to the arm lying with some play about hinge pin 7 and the fastening structure through which arm 6 is connected to leaf 2 being comprised of two parts 17 and 18 which are swingable about a horizontal axis 16.
  • the geometrical axis of hinge pin 22 In the swung-open position the geometrical axis of hinge pin 22 is actually not absolutely vertical, but in the swung-shut position of arms 5 and 6, said geometrical axis is actually vertical and thus also in parallel relationship with the geometrical axes of hinge pin 7 and hinge axis 3. It may thus be assumed by approximation that arms 5 and 6 move in_a horizontal plane during the swinging shut or open.
  • a screw 23 On the side of flange 6' opposite groove 15, is further screwed through the side wall from arm 6, a screw 23 provided with a six-sided opening for a socket wrench.
  • the end of screw 23 projects inside groove 15. That end of screw 23 projecting into groove 15 lies during the swinging shut of arms 5 and 6, opposite eccentrically- lying ring 14 with which said end as explained hereinafter, will cooperate for the further joint swinging of arms 5 and 6, to insure the required clamping force.
  • the spacing between the geometrical axes of hinge axis 3 and hinge pin 7 is precisely equal to the spacing between the geometrical axes of hinge pin 7 and hinge pin 20.
  • knob 8 By means of knob 8 the arms 5 and 6 are swung to the shut position, that is the position shown in figure 3. Because arm 5 is connected by means of part 9 to the fixed frame 1; this corresponds to a swinging of arm 5 about hinge pin 11 in the direction shown in figure 2 by arrow 24. Such swinging may consequently be obtained by letting knob 8 which is connected through hinge axis 7 to the end of arm 5, describe in a horizontal plane an arc about the geometrical axis of hinge pin 11 over somewhat more than 90°.
  • arms 5 and 6 have completely swung shut and thus lie in the extension of one another and in parallel relationship with the lengthwise direction of the lowermost section from fixed frame 1, leaf 2 lies in completely closed position against fixed frame 1.
  • arm 6 lies with groove 15 thereof precisely over eccentric overthickness 13 on the topmost end of hinge pin 11. That end of screw 23 lying inside groove 15, lies thereby on that side facing leaf 2 against ring 14 in a location where said ring lies substantially nearest the geometrical axis of pin 11. Due to the presence of groove 15, no single part from arm 6 lies on that side removed from fixed frame 1 of the fastening structure through which arm 5 is connected to fixed frame 1 and which is comprised of part 9, hinge pin 11, ring 12, overthickness 13 and ring 14. In said swung-shut position of arms 5 and 6 shown in figure 3, there is still not obtained any locking of leaf 2 relative to frame 1.
  • the joint swinging of the swung-shut arms 5 and 6 is caused by swinging knob 8 over 180° in a horizontal plane about the geometrical axis of hinge pin 11. Both the swinging of knob 8 to swing arms 5 and 6 shut, and the swinging of knob 8 to swing arms 5 and 6 thereafter jointly over further 180° occur in one and the same horizontal plane, whereby knob 8 actually describes an arc with the same radius about the same axis, namely the geometrical axis of hinge pin 11, in such a way that the complete closing operation of the locking means as described above, is caused by a smooth continuous arclike movement over 270° of knob 8.
  • the operation of the locking means is very simple, in such a way that the complete opening and closing can occur with a continuous movement in one and the same plane.
  • the arms 5 and 6 extend in parallel relationship with the fixed frame 1, in such a way that the locking means projects very slightly, practically but some 5 cm outside frame 1.
  • a very high closing force is obtained, in such a way that the leaf 2 is not only locked but moreover strongly pulled against fixed frame 1.
  • Such pulling can moreover be adjusted very simply by screwing in or out screw 23 in arm 6. In this way a good closing can be obtained with any frame.
  • That end of arm 6 connected to leaf 2 is so shaped that said end in the completely closed condition of locking means 4, closes nicely the opening between plate 20 and the horizontal leg from part 9 on the side removed from fixed frame 1, and thus also connects smoothly to that rim 21 lying en the side of said end, from part 18.
