It is not dependent on the tension of the ribbon 26 for reversing the spooling actions of the spools 28 and 30 so that it is not subject to a potential blockage of ribbon movement for one reason or another which could cause an undesirable premature reversal of ribbon movement prior to an exhaustion of either one of the ribbon spools and so that the print wires 24b when a wire print head is used cannot be impeded in their movements toward the medium 40 by the ribbon 26 and possibly punch through the ribbon 26 and be prevented by the ribbon from full return movement with a disastrous ribbon and wire jam resulting.
  • the ribbon drive mechanism does not require the use of sensing arms dragging on the ribbon 26 during spooling to change the winding direction which could cause undesired ribbon tension and which would have to be rotated out of the way manually when a new ribbon is installed in the machine.
  • the ribbon loading path is simple particularly since the ribbon is not routed around such tension arms.
  • the ribbon drive has few parts resulting in, potentially, a very low cost mechanism. It does not exert a drag on the carrier 22 for the print head 24 during printing. The tension on the ribbon 26 is not increased during reversing.
  • the swingable bail 20 together with the carrier 22 and print head 24 as an assembly can be constructed to have a desirably low inertia.

Claims (2)

1. Druckwerk, bei dem ein Farbband (26) zwischen zwei Spulen (28; 30) hin- und hergewickelt wird, die auf an den Enden des Druckbereiches angeordneten Achsen (32; 34) montiert sind, so daß das Farbband längs des Druckbereiches verläuft, mit einem Druckkopf (24), der längs des Druckbereiches fortbewegt wird und eine Farbband-Antriebsschwinge (20) trägt, mit zwei Wirkstellungen, in denen sie jeweils zum Antrieb einer der Spulen wirksam ist, wobei jede Achse (32; 34) ein Schaltelement (54; 55) aufweist, das normalerweise unter dem Einfluß des Farbbandes der betreffenden Spule in seiner unwirksamen Lage ist und, wenn es in seine wirksame Lage freigegeben ist, die Farbband-Antriebsschwinge in eine ihrer beiden Wirkstellungen schaltet, in der sie die dem freigegebenen Schaltelement zugeordnete Farbbandspule antreibt, wobei die Farbband-Antriebsschwinge (20) (bei 68) schwenkbar gelagert und mittels eines Schnappmechanismus (74) bistabil ist und eine Klinke (60; 62) auf jeder Seite der Schwenklagerung aufweist, derart, daß jede Klinke in die zugeordnete Spule antreibend eingreifen kann, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß zum Umschalten der Farbband-Antriebsschwinge (20) diese zusätzlich mit einer der Klinke (60; 62) zugeordneten Nockenfläche (64; 66) ausgestattet ist, die so angeordnet ist, daß sie das freigegebene Schaltelement (54; 55) einer entleerten Spule betätigt, wenn der Druckkopf (24) an oder nahe der Spule ist, das freigegebene Schaltelement gegen einen festen Anschlag (51, 52) drückend, welcher dasselbe arretiert, so daß die Farbband-Antriebsschwinge ohne auf das Farbband Spannung auszuüben, umgeschaltet wird, wenn die Nockenfläche an dem freigegebenen Schaltelement anschlägt.
2. Druckwerk nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß für jede Achse die Klinkzähne am Umfang einer runden Scheibe geformt sind, die seitlich des Abspulbereiches des Farbbandes angeordnet ist, wobei die Scheibe an einem mit einer Aussparung versehenen stationären Träger angebracht ist und das Schaltelement mittels einer an der entgegengesetzten Seite der Scheibe angebrachten Feder (57) unter Spannung gehalten ist und durch die Aussparung gelangt, wenn die Aussparung nicht durch die Zufuhr von Farbband verdeckt ist, sowie in eine Vertiefung (51) im Träger eintritt, der eine Schulter (52) aufweist, die den Anschlag bildet.
