Definitions
- the present invention relates to the equipment used by mountaineers and more particularly to ice spikes which, placed under mountain boots, are used to move on snowy slopes or on walls covered with snow and ice.
- It relates more particularly to a safety device adaptable to all ice spikes currently on the market as well as a new type of spike equipped with such a device.
- the existing studs consist essentially of a metal frame, formed of two elementary frames, one for the front of the shoe, the other for the heel, connected by at least one adjustment system. long enough to adapt the crampon to the shoe size.
- Each of these elementary frames is provided with attachment tabs making it possible to fix the crampon on the shoe by means of belts or straps, and, at its lower part, teeth in variable number which are planted in snow or ice during the mountaineer's progress.
- the present invention aims to avoid these very serious faults in a simple, very effective manner and, in general, relates to a safety device which prevents snow from filling the space between the points, this device being constituted essentially of a sheet placed under the frame of the spikes, facing the snow, this sheet being suitable either by its own nature or by means of various suitable fixing means which will be seen in more detail in the following description, being able to deform or move slightly, elastically, in all directions (length, width and thickness) when the user is walking.
- the sheet according to the invention placed under the frame of the orampon avoids mechanical snagging on the sole and on the adjustment system. Forming a screen between the metal parts of the crampon in contact with the sole and the snow, it avoids "thermal" attachment. Offering snow that wants to settle in the space between the points a moving base, deformable in all directions (length, width and thickness), it also prevents snow from settling vertically and this has the consequence of eliminating mechanical attachment between the points.
- the presence of the sheet according to the invention also provides a certain thermal insulation for the feet of the user thus ensuring better protection against the cold.
- Points 6, directed downwards, in variable numbers depending on the crampon model, are provided on the elementary frames 1, 2 and are intended to be planted in snow or ice. Furthermore, points 7 disposed at the front of the crampon are used for progression on very steep slopes, the mountaineer then facing slopes to climb.
- the safety device for ice crampon is in the form of a sheet 10, arranged under the frame 1, 2 of the crampon, extending at least between the lateral points 6, advantageously over the entire length of said crampon, forming a screen between the snow and the metal parts of the crampon in contact with the sole of the shoe.
- said sheet 10 is able, either by its own structure, or thanks to the fixing means allowing it to be fixed to the crampon, to deform or to move slightly, elastically, in all directions (length, width and thickness) when walking of the user.
- Figures 4 and 5 show the way in which this sheet 10 is fixed to the frame of the crampon, the fixing being in this embodiment obtained by means of lateral hooks 11, fixed for example by riveting to said sheet 10.
- the hooks 11 come to fit on the periphery of the frame 1, 2 and perfectly hold the sheet to the latter.
- the fixing of the hooks 11 on the sheet 10 could be obtained by any means other than riveting, for example by gluing.
- FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 illustrate a second embodiment according to which the sheet 10 located under the stud is connected to the latter by elastic ears 1 3 which can be either attached to the sheet 10 or be part of the sheet itself -same and therefore made of the same material as this. Installation is easily done by first placing the ears 13 on the same side and then those on the second side. In this embodiment, either the sheet 10 is crossed by the points 6, 7, the orifices for the passage of the points being made or not in advance, or the sheet 10 bypasses the points 6, 7 in the places where those present themselves.
- FIG. 9 illustrates a variant of this second embodiment in which the elastic ears described in FIGS.
- lateral bands 14 attached to the sheet 10 or forming an integral part thereof, said lateral bands 14 coming over the shoe 8 and immobilizing each other by means of a hook 15 disposed on one of said side bands.
- Other known attachment means can of course replace the hook 15.
- the sheet 10 is also made of a resistant and elastic material. As described previously in the first embodiment, this sheet 10 has a number of hooks lateral which will be placed on the edges of the frames 1 , 2. The rear end of the sheet is fixed to the rear of the crampon frame by a hook 18 similar to the lateral hooks 11. The front end of the sheet, the width of which is reduced at this point so as to be able to pass between the two front points 7 of the spike comes to cap the front part of the shoe 8, the sole 9 of which rests on the spike. For the installation, the lateral hooks 11 and the hook 18 are placed under the crampon before the installation of the boot 8. After having placed the boot in the crampon, the mountaineer takes the front end 16 of the sheet that it stretches and places the hook 17 in the laces 19 of the shoe.
- FIG. 11 illustrates a fourth embodiment, mode according to which the sheet 10 is fixed, as in the first embodiment, by lateral hooks 11 and end hooks 12.
- the sheet 10 rests on the at least one stop 20 secured to the frame of the crampon and occupying substantially the width of the latter.
- This embodiment makes it possible to further promote the ejection of snow thanks to the elasticity of the sheet material. Indeed, at each step, under the weight of the mountaineer, the snow will compress the sheet 10 thus tending to crush it against the sole of the shoe. When the mountaineer raises his foot, the sheet 10, resting on the stops 20, thanks to its elasticity, will tend to return to its original position as shown in FIG. 11 and will eject the snow placed between the points 6.
- the stops 20 may be integral with the sheet 10 and not the stud itself.
- the stops 20 it is not going beyond the scope of the invention to produce stops 20 higher or lower than those shown in FIG. 11 or by modifying the shape and the number of such stops.
- the invention is not limited to the embodiments described above.
- it is possible to fix the sheet 10 under the crampon frame by any other means than lateral hooks, for example by gluing, vulganization, riveting ... the only precaution to be taken being that, either because of the structure of the sheet, or because of the method of attachment, that the sheet can move elastically when the user walks.
- It can also be envisaged to adapt the sheet to the frame of the crampon by mounting said sheet on a semi-rigid or rigid support which will itself be fixed to the crampon by any known means (rivets, nails, glue, etc.).
- a very resistant synthetic rubber such as "Neoprene” which has an excellent tear resistance and which moreover retains a substantially constant hardness even at low temperature.
- the thickness of such a sheet can vary between one and a few millimeters depending on the resistance sought.
- the tension given to the sheet at the time of its installation between the hooks can make it possible to accentuate the rejection of snow between the points of the crampon and to a certain extent favor the maintenance of said sheet with the crampon.
- non-elastic, non-deformable material for example a fabric, a strip of plastic material
- the fixing of said sheet to the crampon is made by means of deformable or elastic elements allowing the sheet to move when the user is walking.
- the safety device according to the invention can be used in all cases where a mountaineer is looking for great safety during his or her movements on snow-covered slopes. It is possible to adapt it to all types of existing crampons and its use is therefore universal. This invention is therefore particularly important for improving the safety of mountaineers.
- the deformation power presented by the sheet 10, and more particularly when the latter is flexible allows it to conform to the contours which the underside of the stud presents, so that these the latter also participate in the restraint action.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to the equipment used by mountaineers and more particularly to ice spikes which, placed under mountain boots, are used to move on snowy slopes or on walls covered with snow and ice.
It relates more particularly to a safety device adaptable to all ice spikes currently on the market as well as a new type of spike equipped with such a device.
In general, the existing studs consist essentially of a metal frame, formed of two elementary frames, one for the front of the shoe, the other for the heel, connected by at least one adjustment system. long enough to adapt the crampon to the shoe size. Each of these elementary frames is provided with attachment tabs making it possible to fix the crampon on the shoe by means of belts or straps, and, at its lower part, teeth in variable number which are planted in snow or ice during the mountaineer's progress.
These ice crampons forming the state of the art have a very serious defect during the evolution on snow, that it is with the rise but especially with the descent and more particularly when the snow is softened by the sun which is very current. Indeed, snow tends to accumulate under the crampon in the space between the points which fills this space more or less quickly thus preventing the points from playing their role, which favors slips and consequently the fall of the mountaineer. This very feared phenomenon of mountaineers happens without their knowledge since under the soles of shoes. It is responsible for most mountain accidents that take place on snow and is therefore directly one of the main causes of fatal accidents in the mountains.
Currently no means exists to overcome this very serious drawback all the attempts made by manufacturers such as for example different shape of the teeth, coating with a silicone paint ... not giving fully satisfactory results.
- - that there is on the one hand, a "mechanical" snapping of the snow on the relief drawings of the sole of the mountain boot and on the various parts of the length adjustment system which form as many points of attachment as well as the packing of snow between the points which, taking into account their distribution, thus delimit a space forming in a way a mold,
- - to this purely mechanical attachment, it is necessary to add, on the other hand, a "thermal bonding", coming from the fact that the metal parts of the crampon under the mountaineer's foot form a cold whole to which the snow sticks easily,
- - and finally, the snow is forcefully compressed in the space between the points by the weight of the mountaineer so that it undergoes vertical pressure at each step and settles all the better is softened by the sun and that it meets at the bottom, a hard surface constituted by the sole of the shoe and the frames of the crampon.
The present invention aims to avoid these very serious faults in a simple, very effective manner and, in general, relates to a safety device which prevents snow from filling the space between the points, this device being constituted essentially of a sheet placed under the frame of the spikes, facing the snow, this sheet being suitable either by its own nature or by means of various suitable fixing means which will be seen in more detail in the following description, being able to deform or move slightly, elastically, in all directions (length, width and thickness) when the user is walking.
The sheet according to the invention placed under the frame of the orampon avoids mechanical snagging on the sole and on the adjustment system.
Finally, the presence of the sheet according to the invention also provides a certain thermal insulation for the feet of the user thus ensuring better protection against the cold.

Such a crampon essentially consists of a metal frame formed by two
In the following description, the invention will be described applied more particularly to this type of stud. but it is obvious that this is not limiting and that it is also applicable to any other type of crampon for example to those having articulated frames to obtain a width adjustment according to the shoe
or to those having other means enabling them to be closed to the shoe, for example peripheral cable systems and levers.
The safety device for ice crampon according to the invention is in the form of a
According to a first embodiment represented in FIGS. 2, 3, 4 and 5, the
D'autres moyens d'accrochage connus pourront bien- entendu remplacer le crochet 15.Figures 6, 7 and 8 illustrate a second embodiment according to which the
According to a third embodiment illustrated schematically in Figure 10, the
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments described above. In particular, it it is possible to fix the
Finally, different types of material can be used to form the sheet adaptable to the stud in accordance with the invention. One can for example use a very resistant synthetic rubber such as "Neoprene" which has an excellent tear resistance and which moreover retains a substantially constant hardness even at low temperature. The thickness of such a sheet can vary between one and a few millimeters depending on the resistance sought. The tension given to the sheet at the time of its installation between the hooks can make it possible to accentuate the rejection of snow between the points of the crampon and to a certain extent favor the maintenance of said sheet with the crampon.
It can also be envisaged to use as material forming the sheet a non-elastic, non-deformable material, for example a fabric, a strip of plastic material, the important thing being that, according to the invention, the fixing of said sheet to the crampon is made by means of deformable or elastic elements allowing the sheet to move when the user is walking.
The safety device according to the invention can be used in all cases where a mountaineer is looking for great safety during his or her movements on snow-covered slopes. It is possible to adapt it to all types of existing crampons and its use is therefore universal. This invention is therefore particularly important for improving the safety of mountaineers.
- - when the sheet used is an elastic sheet; it can be used for several different shoe sizes,
- - it is simple, economical, and has a very low weight, which is particularly sought after by mountaineers,
- - it can be made with very resistant materials, currently existing for other applications,
- - Finally, it can be adapted to any new crampon design such as, for example, that in which the two metal frames connected by a length adjustment system are replaced by a single rigid or semi-flexible plate. In this case, the sheet rests on this plate and plays the same role as that seen previously by preventing the accumulation of snow between the teeth of the crampon.
Finally, if in the present description the device according to the invention has been described using a sheet produced in one piece, it could be envisaged, without departing from the scope of the invention, to produce such a sheet from elements individual juxtaposed parallel to each other.
In addition to the advantages indicated above, it should also be noted that the deformation power presented by the
