Description

The invention relates to a device for pre-moistening electrophotographic copy material bearing a latent image, which is subsequently developed, by guiding the material through a system provided with pairs of inlet and outlet rollers.

Devices for the liquid development of electrophotographic copying materials are known. When used, the copies obtained often have an undesirable gray background, because when the material passes through the developing device, toner particles settle on its surface in non-image areas and cannot be removed.

An electrostatic wet toner device is known in which the copying material is passed through a trough containing clear toner solution and then into the developer solution prior to development (DE-A No. 2047894). However, it has been shown that, with a relatively satisfactory basic distance, such a device is not suitable for high throughput speeds, since the guidance of the material cannot be clearly set.

It is also known (DE-A No. 2046219) to proceed in the liquid development of electrostatic, latent images which are located on a fiber-containing substrate in such a way that, before development, at least the side which is opposite the image-forming side has a first Pre-bath liquid and then both sides are contacted with a second pre-bath liquid. However, the process is cumbersome and does not meet practical requirements.

It was therefore an object of the present invention to provide a device with pre-moistening which works with a liquid developer and which delivers copies with little or no reason and ensures a high throughput speed during operation.

The solution to this problem is based on a device for pre-moistening electrophotographic copying material bearing a latent image, which is subsequently developed, by guiding the material through a system provided with pairs of inlet and outlet rollers. It is characterized in that, in the region of the lower rollers, it contains a plastic fabric, in particular a screen printing fabric, which is adjustable at a distance from the line L defined by the apexes of the roller pairs, as the guide element over the level of which there is an opening provided with openings on its end faces pure application liquid fed, adjustable in distance to the line L and below whose level there is a damming element in the application area, and that it contains an arrangement which feeds the pure developer liquid back to the application pipe via a collecting trough and a liquid tank. In a preferred embodiment, the application tube is a plastic tube provided with a slot.

It is achieved by the invention that image copies can be made available which are practically groundless and have good contrast. The device is simple in design and has a high throughput speed due to its guidance in one level. The connected developing device can have the same design as the device for pre-moistening.

The invention is explained in more detail below using an exemplary embodiment in conjunction with the accompanying drawing. The drawing shows a cross section of the device according to the invention.

Through the pair of inlet rollers 1, 2, which serves as a pair of transport rollers, the latent image-bearing copy material 2 is introduced into the pre-moistening device. The copying material can be in sheet or web form. The material is pre-moistened by supplying liquid from the outlet openings 4 of pure developer liquid 12 from the application tube 5 to the image side. The material is guided through the guide element 6, which consists of a plastic fabric, preferably a screen printing fabric, which is prestressed by the clamping bolt 7. Under the plastic fabric in the application area there is a damming element 8 which briefly accumulates the liquid emerging from the application tube 5 and thus pre-moistens the entire surface of the copying material 3 evenly. The entire guide element 6 is arranged so as to be adjustable in the direction 9, preferably in such a way that the guide plane of the guide element is below the apexes of the inlet and outlet rollers. The copying material is introduced into the subsequent developing device 13 through the pair of discharge rollers 10, 11, which has a gap setting which can vary depending on the thickness of the copying material, but which can generally be set in the range from approximately 0.2 to 1 mm. This is preferably constructed in the same construction as the claimed device for pre-moistening.

The application of the pure developer liquid 12 for pre-moistening takes place through the openings 4 of the application tube 5, which in a preferred embodiment consists of a plastic tube. The pure developer liquid is fed in at the end faces of the tube. The openings can be in the form of bores or slots. However, the openings are preferably formed by a slot. The application tube 5 is arranged so as to be adjustable and can be adjusted in the direction 17 towards the guide element 6 such that the distance between the outlet openings 4 and the surface of the continuous copying material is in a range of approximately 0.5 to 2.5 mm, preferably approximately 1 mm, lies. The pure developer liquid appears evenly at the openings, for example Atmospheric pressure and after pre-moistening the copying material is collected in the drip pan 14 and returned to the application tube 5 in the circuit via the liquid tank 15 by means of a pump 16.

By guiding the copying material 3 in one plane, for example horizontally as shown, a high throughput speed of 10-25 m / min, which can also be exceeded in some cases, is made possible. Work is preferably carried out at throughput speeds in the range of 12-15 m / min.
