Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for detecting by signaling the moment when an animal, a cattle or a horse for example, is about to give birth.
- German patent application DE-A-2809606 discloses a warning of the start of parturition which comprises a buffer placed in the vagina of the beast and intended to transmit to a detector the thrust of the allantoic and amnial pockets when these penetrate into the vagina at the start of parturition.
- This device does not, however, indicate the exact moment when the beast loses water from its allantoic and amnial pockets. This moment is however very important for certain cattle, for example, which must be delivered on time, that is to say very shortly after the rupture of the pockets under penalty of running the risk of losing the animal and its young. Detecting the moment of rupture of the pockets is also very important for certain animal species, for example foal cows which cannot calve or in case the calf does not show up.
- an apparatus comprising a urinary type probe, intended to be introduced between the lips of the vulva of the beast into its vagina so as to collect the water from the allantoic and amnial pockets.
- This probe contains two electrodes which are wetted by water during the rupture of the pockets and this results in between the electrodes a variation in electrical resistance which causes an alarm to be triggered. It was found that this device produces nuisance alarms probably due to variations in the humidity or the presence of phlegm rejected by the animal. On the other hand, if this device aims to detect the rupture of the pockets of water, it does not make it possible to subsequently detect the effective start of parturition.
- the problem which the invention aims to solve is to provide a device capable of detecting and signaling in a safe manner and without nuisance alarms when a beast is about to give birth and which, moreover, is capable of monitoring the evolution subsequent to parturition.
- the invention solves the problem by a simple construction device specially designed to detect and signal the moment when an animal loses water as well as the moment when effective birthing begins.
- a warning of the start of parturition intended to be attached to the back of a beast characterized in that it comprises a closed container intended to collect the water from the pockets of the beast, a pipe connected to the part upper part of the container so that its free end can be introduced into the vagina of the beast and a pressure variation detector communicating with the interior volume of the container, at the bottom of the latter, so as to respond to an increase pressure in the container volume and to produce an electrical signal for the control of an alarm device.
- the advantage of the horn according to the invention is that it detects parturition with safety and precision from the start, which makes it possible to control the duration of preparation for the opening of the neck of the matrix, and that it signals then the start of the second phase of the mechanism, which provides total security aimed at completely reducing the risk of loss of high-value animals.
- Another advantage of the device according to the invention is that it allows birthing, even with the device in place on the animal.
- FIG. 1 shows an embodiment of the device according to the invention placed on a cow 1.
- the device essentially comprises a closed container 2 attached to a support 3 kept suspended opposite the vagina of the beast 1 and on which is also mounted a movable stop 4, a pipe 5 having one end intended to be introduced into the vagina of the beast and a detector 6 connected to an alarm device 7 placed on the back of the beast 1.
- the support 3 is here constituted by a grid suspended from the animal and which bears against the rear of the latter by means of two arms 39.
- the stop 4 is mounted on rods 43 fixed on the support 3 and which allow to move in translation relative to the support 3.
- Helical springs 44 surround the rods 43 and bring the stop 44 in normal position, the stop 4 being retained at the end of the rods 43 by stop bolts 45 screwed on the threaded ends of the guide rods. Any pressure against the stop 4 therefore results in a translation of this stop 4 parallel to itself to the support 3, against the action of the coil springs 44.
- a closed container 2 intended to collect the water from the allantoic and amnial pockets.
- This container can have any shape and be made of any material.
- a hose 5 for example of rubber, extending so that its end free can be introduced into the vagina of the beast beyond the urethra.
- the container 2 thus collects the calving water without collecting the urine.
- the length of the pipe 5 can for example be from 15 to 28 cm and its diameter can for example be from 1 to 3 cm depending on the animals to which it must be adapted.
- the container 2 must have a sufficient volume to ensure safe and stable operation, for example of the order of 300 to 500 cm 3.
- the latter therefore detects in this device any increase in pressure in the container 2 and can therefore trigger the alarm device 7.
- This may be a signaling device or any alarm, an acoustic device for example or even a small radio frequency transmitter which allows the livestock to be monitored from a greater distance.
- the pipe 5 is formed with an orifice 51 in its wall in order to allow the introduction of the calving water when the mouth 52 of the pipe 5 is obstructed.
- the device according to the invention can be fixed to the animal by any system of splints.
- the support 3 is suspended from a ring 31 fixed to an apron 32 having the shape of the back of the beast so as to be able to be placed there.
- the apron 32 is fixed on a cover 30.
- the opening of the ring 31 leaves a passage for the tail of the beast.
- the support 3 is connected to the ring 31 by means of a double arm 33, the ends of which are clamped in the collars 34 secured to the support by the screws 35. In this way, the spacing of the ring 31 by support plane 3 can be set for each animal.
- the support 3 is held firmly in place by straps 36 enclosing the buttocks 11 of the animal and attached to the cover 30. Thanks to this mode of suspension, the animal can lie on its side and the device is always placed in the extension of the back, in position facing the vagina. In this way, in the event of an unforeseen event, the animal can give birth, even with the device in place.
- the container 2 has a draining means. To evacuate the liquid collected after the water pockets have ruptured.
- This means consists for example of a hole closed by a cover 21. By removing this cover 21 after the appearance of an alarm, the alarm signal is cut off and the device is then ready to signal the start of the second parturition mechanism phase: effective parturition. This moment is detected by the movable stop 4 as we will see.
- the movable stop 4 is secured to an arm 41, the free end of which actuates the arm of a contactor 9 fixed to the wall of the container 2.
- the contactor 9 is connected by an electrical cord 91 in the electrical circuit of the device. alarm 7.
- the feet or possibly the head of the young cross the vagina of the animal 1 and immediately come into contact with the stopper 4.
- the stopper 4 is pushed back to the support 3 and the arm 41, driven with the stop 4, then actuates the contactor 9 which triggers the alarm device.
- the horn as described therefore operates from the preparatory phase to parturition, that is to say from the rupture of the allantoic and amnial pockets and it monitors the development of parturition.
- This device thus makes it possible to reliably detect the start of basing, even if it is an unforeseen or abnormal situation, which makes it possible to avoid losses of costly livestock.
- Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a second example of embodiment of the device aver - weaver according to the invention.
- the same essential components can be distinguished as in the first example: a container 2, a movable stop 4, a pipe 5, a pressure variation detector 6, a contactor 9.
- the detector 6 is here carried by the container 2 just like the contactor 9.
- the electric cable 61 connects the detector output to the alarm device (not shown).
- the movable stop 4 is pivotally mounted on the arm of the contactor 9.
- the stop 4 is fixed to this arm of the contactor by means of a flexible arm 42 in the pivoting plane so as to allow the beast to put if necessary with the device in place.
- the fixing means for suspending the apparatus on the rump of the beast are here constituted by fasteners 37 and 38 intended to be fixed to splints surrounding the tail and the buttocks of the beast and held in place by a chest belt by example.
