Description

The invention relates to a process for the production of thermoplastic copolymers of low-density ethylene as processable powders of relatively high bulk densities by copolymerization of ethylene and butene (I) with the aid of Ziegler catalysts containing vanadium.

The production of low density ethylene polymers is usually carried out by polymerizing ethylene with free radical initiation under high pressures of 1,000 bar to 3,000 bar. These processes have the disadvantage that the generation of high pressures is technically complex and costly. Another disadvantage of these methods is that they cannot be used to produce polymers with such high molecular weights that they have satisfactory properties such as, for example, good stress crack resistance to surface-active media or high breaking strength under alternating bending stress and others. Because of their relatively low molecular weights, the ethylene polymers produced by the high-pressure processes are therefore not suitable for all areas of use.

Furthermore, a method has become known for the production of low-density polyethylene with densities of 0.915 g / cm 3 to 0.930 g / cm 3 by copolymerization of ethylene with (1) -olefins in hexane at temperatures> 130 ° C. In this process, it is disadvantageous that the polymer is obtained in solution in hexane and must be separated from the solvent.

A process has recently become known from Belgian patent 862,697 in which ethylene and optionally (l) -olefins as comonomers are polymerized by polymerization with vanadium-containing catalysts in inert liquid hydrocarbons at temperatures from 50 ° C. to about 95 ° C. and pressures from 10 bar to 100 bar powdered polymers with excellent properties for further processing into finished parts. Liquid inert hydrocarbons, preferably a hexane cut with the boiling range from 63 ° C. to 80 ° C., were mentioned as diluents in the polymerization. However, using such diluents, it is not possible to prepare pulverulent polymers of ethylene and butene- (1) with densities of about 0.900 g / cm 3 to about 0.930 g / em 3 . Rather, the polymers accumulate as lumps and lumps and cannot be handled in technical equipment.

In contrast, it has now been found that copolymers of low densities from ethylene and butene- (1) can also be produced as free-flowing powders with relatively high bulk densities if liquid butene- (1) is used as an inert diluent, which may also include other inert saturated and / or may contain unsaturated C 4 hydrocarbons.

The invention therefore relates to a process for the preparation of powdered thermoplastic copolymers of ethylene and butene- (1) with densities of about 0.900 g / cm 3 to about 0.930 g / cm 3 , good flowability of the powder, average leren grain diameters up to 1000 microns and practically no fine grain content by polymerization of ethylene and butene- (1), optionally in the presence of hydrogen, in inert liquid hydrocarbons at temperatures between 50 ° C and about 95 ° C and pressures from 10 bar to 100 bar, preferably 20 bar to 60 bar, by batch or continuous process using Ziegler catalysts, produced in inert liquid hydrocarbons by reacting vanadyl (V) compounds containing chlorine and alkoxy with organoaluminum compounds, separating off the insoluble reaction product and activating with organoaluminum compounds, where as the vanadyl (v) compound a reaction product of vanadyl (V) chloride and a vanadyl (V) alcoholate in molar ratios of 1 to 2 to 2 to 1 or directly the reaction product of vanadyl (V) chloride with an alcohol, preferably ethanol, propanol (1), butanol (1) in molar ratios of 1 to 2 to 1 to 1 and as aluminum nium organic compound for the reduction of ethyl aluminum dichloride and / or diethyl aluminum chloride, isobutyl aluminum dichloride and / or diisobutyl aluminum chloride in molar ratios of aluminum to vanadium compounds from 1 to 1 to 3 to 1 and the reaction of the vanadium compounds with the organoaluminum compounds with stirring with specific stirring performance of 0. 1 to 20,000 watts / m 3 , preferably 1 to 5,000 watts / m 3 , is carried out and the activation with aluminum alkyl compounds of the formula AIR 3 , in which R is hydrocarbon radicals with 2 to 8 carbon atoms, or with alkyl aluminum sesquichloride and / or alkyl aluminum dichloride , in particular ethyl aluminum sesquichloride and / or ethyl aluminum dichloride, characterized in that polymerization is carried out in liquid butene (1), if appropriate in the presence of further inert, saturated and / or unsaturated C 4 hydrocarbons.

According to the invention, polymerization is preferably carried out using pure butene- (1). The commercial purity is 99 percent. However, a C 4 - can also be used according to the invention. Section which may contain, for example, butene (1), trans and cis-butene (2), isobutene, n-butane and isobutane. It is important that the admixtures are indifferent to the polymerization catalyst. For example, the mixture should preferably not contain any butadiene (1,3), which has proven to be a catalyst poison. Of course, care must be taken that "the molar ratio of butene (1) to ethylene required for the desired density of the copolymer in the polymerization is observed.

The process according to the present invention surprisingly offers the possibility of using the catalyst system known from Belgian patent 862,697 to also produce copolymers of ethylene and butene- (1) with significantly lower densities than those described in the Belgian patent, the polymers being in the form of a powder Diluents are obtained in suspension and, after their separation from the suspension, are suitable for further processing into finished plastic parts after addition of the customary finishing aids, so that the otherwise necessary processing of the polymers into granules can be omitted. Since very high conversions can be achieved with the catalysts used according to the invention, measures for removing the catalyst from the polymer can be dispensed with. As a result of their high molecular weights, the low-density copolymers produced according to the invention have excellent performance properties. Thus, in addition to the high flexibility required for some applications, pipes made from the copolymers produced according to the invention have high burst pressures and excellent flexural strength. Injection molded parts show an excellent surface gloss and have no tendency to shrink and warp. Films made from the copolymers produced according to the invention are notable for special shock resistance and elongation at break.

4 ml of a solution of triisobutylaluminum in hexane at a concentration of 100 g / l were pipetted into a 2-1 steel autoclave under nitrogen. Under water cooling, 600 g of butene (1) were pressed into the autoclave through a cartridge filled with 3 A molecular sieve (manufacturer: Union Carbide). The mixture was then heated to the polymerization temperature. To remove the nitrogen, 4 liters of gas were released via a gas meter. Then hydrogen was injected and then ethylene with stirring (1,000 rpm). A suspension of the catalyst component described under a) was discharged into the autoclave at a concentration of 10 g of solid per liter of hexane via a lock. After the end of the polymerization time, during which the polymerization temperature and the pressure were kept constant by adding ethylene, the pressure was increased to Cooled to room temperature and the excess butene relaxed.
