Abstract

Present invention relates to a sensing device for in-situ non-contact detection of photosynthetic microalgae in water. A compact non-contact optical sensing device with low weight and power consumption for detection of photosynthetic algae, including blue-green algae, in water environment is provided. The device is capable of operating continuously, unattended, as a stand-alone or network sensing device. The sensing device is able to observe the water body at the distance and provide quantitative estimation of phytoplankton biomass in water. It can be installed on any platform above the water surface or as a payload for moored or floating buoys. The sensing device according to the present invention is suitable for continuous monitoring of the abundance of phytoplankton in natural seawater, river and lake waters, at water intake, and in industrial installations.
