Abstract

The method includes drying the carbonaceous material in a low oxygen environment and pretreating the carbonaceous material by contacting it with volatile substances contained in a countercurrent gas flow. The volatiles coat the particles of the dry carbonaceous material and close the micropores of the dry carbonaceous material, thereby passivating the carbonaceous material, which prevents it from adsorbing water and oxygen, and thus from self-ignition. The pre-treated dry material is then subjected to devolatilization at temperatures at which volatiles are released. The recovered volatiles are mixed with the gas flow in countercurrent and then used to pre-treat the upstream dry carbonaceous material.
