Abstract

Bundles of natural cellulose fibres, preferably from bast or leaves, especially flax and flax tow, with an E modulus greater than 50 GPa are first chopped up and then subjected either to mechanical pulping and defibration, or to semi-chemical pulping and defibration by wet grinding. This gives fibres or bundles with an E modulus greater than 50 GPa and a maximum length of 25 mm, preferably 15 mm, and especially 10 mm. This material is preferably ground to a fineness of 25-70 degrees SR and especially 35-55 degrees SR. The product is highly suitable for use as a fibrous reinforcing material in shaped objects with a matrix consisting of a hardened inorganic binder containing at least 0.5 wt-% and preferably at least 3 wt-% of the said fibres.
