Abstract

A compost container 1 for use when composting organic refuse, preferably a mixture of household refuse and relatively light garden refuse, can be arranged such that pernicious animals, such as mice and rats, and also flies and insects, cannot penetrate into the interior of the compost container 1. This is achieved by manufacturing the compost container with large ventilation openings 17 in the bottom 3 of the compost container or in the lower part of the metallic side wall 2 of the compost container. When these ventilation openings have a maximum diameter of approximately 14 mm, mice and rats cannot penetrate into the container, just as they will not be able, either, to gnaw their way through the metal sheet. In order to ensure that there is sufficient ventilation air for composting, small ventilation openings 12 are formed in an upper edge region 11 of the side wall 2. When these openings have a maximum diameter or breadth of approx. 2.5 mm, flies and other insects are prevented from penetrating into the interior of the container by way of these ventilation openings 12. Since flies and other insects do not attempt to penetrate into the fresh refuse through a layer of compost earth, it will be possible to keep the above-described compost container free from the ingress both of mice and rats and insects as well when care is taken to ensure that the connections between the bottom, the side walls and the lid are otherwise close-fitting. <IMAGE>
