Abstract
The use of a sulphated monosaccharide or oligosaccharide, or a salt or a complex thereof, as a constituent in a topical preparation for preventing or treating diseases or conditions of teeth or periodontium, especially for treating or preventing inflammatory and plaque-related conditions, a method for preventing or treating such diseases or conditions by the topical application of a sulphated monosaccharide or oligosaccharide, or a salt or a complex thereof, and a topical preparation which comprises a sulphated monosaccharide or oligosaccharide, or a salt or a complex thereof, for preventing or treating such diseases or conditions. The sulphated saccharide is, in particular, a polysulphated or persulphated saccharide, for example sucralfate (sucrose octakis(hydrogen sulphate) aluminium complex), or a sodium and/or potassium salt of sucrose octakis (hydrogen sulphate). The preparation can be in the form of a solution, suspension, ointment, paste, powder, gel, cream, tooth fixative, periodontal implant, chewing gum, chewing tablet, soluble tablet or lozenge.
