Abstract

A method of preparing a spar of fiber-reinforced material for a wind turbine blade, which spar forms a structural member of the blade and a longitudinally-extending hollow structure of a first and a second cap interconnected by webs. The method comprises supporting a longitudinally-extending mandrel in a horizontal position at a number of positions along the length of the mandrel, and placing a first layer of fiber-reinforced material on the mandrel to form a part of the first cap which is then allowed to cure. The mandrel is then turned around an axis in the longitudinal direction of the mandrel, and a second layer of fiber-reinforced material is placed on the mandrel to form a part of the second cap, which is then allowed to cure. The mandrel is then withdrawn from the cured parts along the longitudinal direction of the mandrel. The invention further relates to a mandrel for the production of a spar for a wind turbine blade according to the above, where the mandrel forms a hollow longitudinally extending structure. The mandrel comprises two longitudinally extending halves connected by dilatation joints allowing for a compression of the mandrel in a direction transverse to its longitudinal direction.
