Abstract
The present invention relates to a hinge assembly for windows and doors. The hinge assembly comprises a special pivot pin allowing for adjusting the window sash or door leaf relative to the window or door frame, respectively.
Description
DK 181221 B1
The present invention relates to the field of hinge assemblies for windows and doors.
Installing and adjusting door and window hinges can be a difficult and frustrating process for the user. The door or window can bind and lead to damage to the window sash or door panel, and/or to the wall part defining the window or door area. Often, the users may have to completely remove the door or window during the adjusting operation, thereby risking damage to the door or window and surrounding areas.
JP2000034852 discloses a hinge assembly for doors with a longitudinal-lateral position adjustment. Vertical adjustment of position is conducted by operating a rise-fall adjusting screw part provided at the lower end part of a support tube part. The support tube part is provided with a horizontal screw hole and screw penetrating a part of the peripheral wall.
Object of the Invention
The objective of the present invention is to provide an adjustable hinge assembly.
A first aspect of the present invention relates to a hinge assembly for windows and doors comprising: - a first leaf adapted for being mounted to a window or door frame;
> DK 181221 B1 - a second leaf adapted for being mounted to a window sash or door leaf, respectively; and - a pivot pin comprising a first elongate end held by said first leaf and a second elongate end held by said second leaf; wherein said pivot pin comprises a middle section formed as a plate with a first face, a second opposing face, and three or more sides edges, wherein said first end is fastened to the centre of said first face, wherein said second end is eccentrically fastened to said second face; and wherein said first leaf comprises a stop edge adapted for releasably engaging with one of said side edges of said plate.
As with other hinge assemblies for the purpose of allowing windows and doors to open by pivoting, the first leaf should be attached to the window or door frame, while the second leaf is to be mounted to the window sash or door leaf, respectively.
The first leaf comprises a base plate and a guide channel, wherein said base plate is adapted for being mounted to a window or door frame, wherein said guide channel is adapted for receiving the first end of said pivot pin, and wherein said middle section is wider than the diameter of said guide channel, thereby preventing it from entering said guide channel.
In one or more embodiments, the hinge assembly comprises a piston means.
The piston means may be adapted for forcing the first end of said pivot pin partly out of said guide channel. Thereby, a side edge of said middle section is released from engagement with the stop edge. This operation makes it possible to turn the middle section, e.g., with a tool, such as a wrench, or with the fingers.
The base plate of the first leaf comprises a corner configured as the stop edge.
Thereby, the middle section engages with the corner, and no other type of stop pin is needed.
2 DK 181221 B1
In one or more embodiments, the piston means is a screw, preferably a socket set screw, operably connected to said guide channel. The guide channel is preferably threaded. By turning the screw in or out of the channel, the middle section turns up or down, respectively, thereby releasing or fastening the middle section from or to the stop edge. As the second end of the pivot pin is eccentrically fastened to the second face of the middle section, the user can, by turning the middle section, change the distance between the door leaf or windows sash and the window or door frame, respectively, thereby correcting their relative position.
In one or more embodiments, the second leaf comprises a base plate and a guide channel. The base plate is adapted for being mounted to a window sash or door leaf, and the guide channel is adapted for receiving the second end of the pivot pin. To avoid that the middle section can enter the guide channel, it is configured to be wider than the diameter of said guide channel.
A second aspect relates to a window and window sash or door frame and door panel comprising a hinge assembly according to the present invention.
As used in the specification and the appended claims, the singular forms "a", "an", and "the" include plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Ranges may be expressed herein as from "about" or "approximately" one particular value and/or to "about" or "approximately" another particular value.
When such a range is expressed, another embodiment includes from the one particular value and/or to the other particular value. Similarly, when values are expressed as approximations, by use of the antecedent "about", it will be understood that the particular value forms another embodiment.
It should be noted that embodiments and features described in the context of one of the aspects of the present invention also apply to the other aspects of the invention.

Figure 1 is a hinge assembly 100 in perspective view, comprising a first leaf 110, a second leaf 120, and a pivot pin 130. The first leaf 110 is adapted for mounting to a door or window frame (not shown), and the second leaf 120 is adapted for mounting to a window sash or door leaf (not shown). The first 110 and second leaf 120 is operably connected via a pivot pin 130.
Figure 2 is a hinge assembly 100 in perspective transparent view, thereby also showing the embedded parts 132, 134 of the pivot pin 130, as well as the guide channels 114, 124. The first leaf 110 of the hinge assembly 100 comprises a base plate 112 and a guide channel 114. The first leaf 110 is adapted for being mounted to a door or window frame (not shown) and the guide channel 114 is på DK 181221 B1 adapted for receiving the first end 132 of the pivot pin 130. The second leaf 120 of the hinge assembly 100 also comprises a base plate 122 and a guide channel 124. The second leaf 120 is adapted for being mounted to a window sash or a door leaf (not shown) and the guide channel 124 is adapted for receiving the second end 134 of the pivot pin 130. The first 110 and second 120 leaves are thereby operably connected to the pivot pin 130. The pivot pin 130 also comprises a middle section 136. The middle section 136 is formed as a plate with a first face 131 (see Figure 5), a second opposing face 133, and eight sides edges 135. The number of side edges 135 should be more than three to be able to function as a contact surface for a tool or for a user's fingers, but also to function as a contact surface for a stop edge 118 (see Figure 3). The first end 132 of the pivot pin 130 is fastened to the center of middle section's first face 131, and the second end 134 is eccentrically fastened to the middle section's second face 133. The hinge assembly 100 also comprises a piston means 140, here configured as a socket set screw. The socket set screw 140 is adapted for forcing the first end 132 of said pivot pin 130 partly out of the first leafs guide channel 114. Thereby, a side edge 135 of said middle section 136 is released from engagement with the stop edge 118 (see Figure 3). This operation makes it possible to turn the middle section 136, e.g., with a tool, such as a wrench, or with the fingers. Hence, by turning the socket set screw 140 in or out of the channel 114 (or up and down within the channel 114), the middle section 136 turns up or down, respectively, thereby releasing or fastening the middle section 136 from or to the stop edge 118. As the second end 134 of the pivot pin 130 is eccentrically fastened to the second face 133 of the middle section 136, the user can, by turning the middle section 136, change the distance between the door leaf or windows sash and the window or door frame, respectively, thereby correcting their relative position.
Figure 4 shows an exemplary view in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. The pivot pin 130 comprises a middle section 136, with a first face 131 and a second face133. The second end 134 of the pivot pin 130 is
, DK 181221 B1 shown eccentrically fastened to the second face 133. A piston means 140 embodied as a socket set screw is shown relative to the first end 132 of the pivot pin 130, and an end cap 150 is shown relative to the second end 134.
Figure 5 shows the same elements of Figure 4, but from a different view to better show the first face 131 of the middle section 136. Here it may be seen that the first end 132 is fastened to the center of the first face 131.
