Pipe Flashing
Field of invention
The present invention relates to a pipe flashing for sealing around a pipe extending through an opening in a roof structure.
Prior art
In order to prevent leakage around pipes extending through roof structures, several types of pipe flashings have been developed. Since the roof pitch may vary between different buildings, it is necessary to have different pipe flashings in order to meet the various requirements of roof structures having different roof pitches. Likewise, the dimension of the pipe extending through the roof structure may vary. Accordingly, different pipe flashings are needed in order to seal against pipes of different diameters.
Therefore, in the prior art a huge number of pipe flashing variants are required in order to meet the various demands caused by variations in roof pitch and pipe diameter.
From FR 595569, a pipe flashing is known. The pipe flashing comprises a dome and a tapered member, wherein the tapered member can be attached to the upper part of the dome, and wherein the tapered member has an open upper part. The base of the dome completely covers the opening of the tile regardless of the inclination of the roof. However, the pipe flashing is one-size only, and thereby the pipe flashing may not be suited for all purposes and all roof pitches.
Therefore, it would be desirable to have a pipe flashing that can be used to different roof pitches and (e.g. vertically extending) pipes of different diameters.
It is an object of the invention to provide a pipe flashing that can be used for different roof pitches and pipes of different diameters.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a pipe flashing that can be mounted without glue or finishing the joints.
Summary of the invention
The object of the present invention can be achieved by a pipe flashing as defined in claim 1. Preferred embodiments are defined in the dependent sub claims, explained in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The pipe flashing, according to the invention, is a pipe flashing for sealing around a pipe extending through an opening in a roof structure, wherein the pipe flashing comprises:
- a dome member;
- a tapered member adapted to be arranged on and attached to the top of the dome member, wherein the tapered member has an open top portion, wherein the dome member is provided with markings for cutting the dome member according to a number of predefined roof pitches in order to provide the dome member with an upper opening that makes it possible to let a pipe extend through the dome member and further through the tapered member and its top portion when the dome member is attached to the roof structure.
Hereby, the dome member can be cut in order to provide an opening in the desired position of the dome member in order to fit the pipe flashing to the roof pitch. The pipe flashing is adapted to adjustably fit around the pipe independent of the roof pitch.
It is important to underline that the pipe does not have to extend vertically. However, in many applications, the pipe will extend vertically or basically vertically. In case the pipe extends vertically, the roof pitch defines the optimum position of the upper opening allowing a pipe to extend through the dome member and further through the tapered member. In practice, the angle between the roof structure and the pipe determines the optimum position of the upper opening in the dome member. By way of example, if the pipe extends perpendicular to a roof structure, the upper opening should be provided basically in the central part of the top portion of the dome member. The same should be the case if the roof is flat (horizontal) and the pipe extends vertically.
By a pipe flashing according to the invention, it is possible to provide a pipe flashing that can be mounted without glue or finishing the joints.
The pipe flashing according to the invention is a pipe flashing for sealing around a pipe extending through an opening in a roof structure.
The pipe may be a vent pipe or a pipe for another purpose e.g. a chimney pipe.
The pipe flashing comprises a dome member. The dome member may be made in a hard material such as metal or plastic. The shape of the dome member must accommodate that the tapered member or a contact portion attached thereto can be brought into basically full contact with the outside surface of the dome member and at the same time be arranged in different positions on the dome member. Hereby, it is possible to arrange the tapered member relative to the dome member in such a manner that the tapered member can receive a (e.g. vertically extending) pipe extending through the dome member and through the tapered member.
The tapered member (or a contact portion thereof) is adapted to be arranged on and attached to the top of the dome member. The tapered member (or a contact portion thereof) is preferably shaped and configured to be slidably arranged on and attached to the top of the dome member. The tapered member may be made in a hard material such as metal or plastic.
The tapered member is provided with an open top portion. Accordingly, the pipe can extend through this opening.
The dome member is provided with markings for cutting the dome member according to a number of predefined roof pitches in order to provide the dome member with an upper opening that makes it possible to let a (e.g. vertically extending) pipe extend through the dome member and further through the tapered member and its top portion when the dome member is attached to the roof structure.
In a preferred embodiment, according to the invention, the dome is upwardly closed (thus is has only one opening) until an upper opening is cut. The user may provide an upper opening allowing the dome to be arranged on a roof having a predefined roof pitch and at the same time allowing the pipe to extend through the dome member and through the tapered member arranged on top of the dome member and thus covering the upper opening of the dome member.
The tapered member is configured to be attached to the dome member by using attachment means (e.g. a number of screws).
It may be an advantage that the tapered member is provided with markings (M') for cutting the top portion of the tapered member in order to make it fit the outside geometry of the pipe. Hereby, the user can cut the tapered member in order to make the tapered member fit the outer geometry of the pipe.
It may be beneficial that the tapered member is a frusto-conical member.
Hereby, it is possible to provide a pipe flashing adapted to fit pipes having a circular cross section.
The tapered member may have a top portion having a rectangular cross section.

It may be beneficial that the base portion is a flexible base portion made of a stretchable metal (e.g. aluminium) grid, embedded in a flexible material (e.g. a polymer rubber). Hereby, it is possible to form the base portion to have a geometry corresponding to the outer geometry of the roof structure.
The base portion may preferably be provided with an adhesive layer (preferably protected by cover foil that needs to be removed before installation). Hereby, the attachment of the base portion onto the roof structure is eased. Furthermore, such base portion may be used for chimney installations and ventilation installations on corrugated roofs (e.g. roofs coved with roof tiles).
It may be an advantage that the base portion is roofing felt adapted to be attached to a roof covered with roofing felt. Hereby, it is possible to attach the base portion to a roof covered with roofing felt.
It may be beneficial that the pipe flashing comprises an attachment ring attached to the base portion.
Hereby, it is possible to attach the base portion to the attachment ring. Accordingly, the dome member may be attached to the base portion without use of glue. The dome member can be mechanically attached to the base portion by pressing the dome member into engagement with the base portion by means of the attachment ring.
It may be an advantage that the attachment ring comprises a base structure and a protruding portion extending basically perpendicular thereto. Hereby, the base portion can be attached to the protruding portion of the attachment ring.
Application of an attachment ring makes it possible to sandwich the base portion between the lower portion of the dome member and the protruding portion of the attachment ring.

Detailed description of the invention
Referring now in detail to the drawings for the purpose of illustrating preferred embodiments of the present invention, a pipe flashing 2 of the present invention is illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a schematic, perspective exploded view of a pipe flashing 2 according to the invention. The pipe flashing 2 comprises a dome member 4 attached to a base portion 6. The base portion 6 may preferably have a basically rectangular shape. Depending on the roof structure onto which the pipe flashing 2 is intended to be attached, the base portion 6 may be made of e.g. a flexible and formable sheet material or roofing felt. An opening 14 is provided in the dome member
4. The opening 14 is circular and provided in such a manner that the opening extends horizontally, when the dome member 4 is attached to a roof structure having a predefined roof pitch a as indicated in Fig. 1A.
The pipe flashing 2 comprises a tapered member 8 provided as a frustoconical member having an opening 14' provided in the top portion of the tapered member 8. The tapered member 8 has a longitudinal axis X. A contact portion 10 is attached to the bottom portion of the tapered portion 8. The contact portion 10 is shaped to be brought into full contact with the outer surface of the dome member 4. Accordingly, the radius of curvature of the surface of the contact portion 10 corresponds to the radius of curvature of the dome member 4.
The pipe flashing 2 comprises a band clamp 12 configured to seal against a pipe extending through the pipe flashing 2. The band clamp 12 is configured to be attached to the outside structure of the upper part of the tapered portion 8. Attachment of the band clamp 12 to the outside structure of the upper part of the tapered portion 8 may be carried out by means of a hose clamp (not sown).
Fig. IB illustrates a schematic, perspective exploded view of the pipe flashing 2 shown in Fig. 1A in an assembled configuration. The pipe flashing 2 comprises a band clamp 12 attached to the top portion of the tapered member 8. A hose clamp 44 configured to be clamped on the outside of the band clamp 12 is arranged above the tapered member 8.
The hose clamp 12 comprises an adjustment screw 48 configured to tighten the hose clamp 44.
The tapered member 8 is a frusto-conical member having an opening provided in the top portion of the tapered member 8. The tapered member 8 comprises a contact portion 10 attached to the bottom portion of the tapered portion 8. The contact portion 10 has a geometry enabling it to be brought into full contact with the outer surface of the dome member 4 onto which the tapered member 8 is arranged and attached. The radius of curvature of the surface of the contact portion 10 corresponds to the radius of curvature of the dome member 4.
The tapered member 8 is configured to be attached to the dome member 4 by means of screws 40. It is indicated that the screws 40 can be screwed into the contact portion 10 (and hence the tapered member 8) in order to attach the contact portion 10 to the dome member 4.
The dome member 4 is attached to a base portion 6 attached to the bottom portion of the dome member 4. The tapered member 8 is arranged in such a manner that its longitudinal axis X extends vertically.
Fig. 1C illustrates the pipe flashing 2 shown in Fig. IB mounted on a roof 20 on a building 22. The pipe flashing 2 seals against a chimney pipe 24 extending through an opening in the roof 20. The opening is covered by the pipe flashing 2. The chimney pipe 24 extends vertically and a chimney cap 26 is provided in the top portion of the chimney pipe 24.
Fig. 2A illustrates a cross-sectional side view of a band clamp 12 according to the invention. The band clamp 12 comprises a top portion 16 and a bottom portion 18 angled relative to the top portion 16. The angle Θ between the bottom portion 18 and the top portion 16 is about 165 degrees. Accordingly, the angle ß between bottom portion 18 and vertical is about 15 degrees.
The angle ß between bottom portion 18 corresponds to the angle between the tapered portion (see Fig. 1A and Fig. IB) and vertical. Accordingly, the bottom portion 18 of the band clamp 12 is configured to bear against the outside surface of the tapered portion (see Fig. 1A and Fig. IB) while the top portion 16 extends vertically and hereby is capable of sealing against a vertically extending pipe extending through the tapered portion surrounded by the band clamp 12.
A gap 28 is provided between the two end portions of the band clamp
12. Accordingly, the band clamp 12 is adapted to surround top portions of tapered members having a different diameter. Therefore, the band clamp 12 can be used independent of the pipe dimension. The band clamp 12 may be overlapping in any required extent in order to make the band clamp 12 fit the size of the pipe that the pipe flashing is intended to seal against.
Fig. 2B illustrates a top view of the band clamp 12 shown in Fig. 2A. The gap 28 is visible in Fig. 2A.
Fig. 2C illustrates a cross-sectional side view of a band clamp 12 according to the invention. A sealing member 50 is provided between a pipe 24 and the band clamp 12 in order to seal the space between the pipe 24 and the band clamp 12. Accordingly, the sealing member 50 prevents water from entering the gap between the pipe 24 and the band clamp 12. A hose clamp 44 surrounds the top portion 16 of the band clamp 12.
Fig. 2D illustrates a cross-sectional side view of the band clamp 12 shown in Fig. 2C in a configuration, in which the sealing member 50 is compressed. The gap between the top portion 16 of the band clamp 12 and the pipe 24 is reduced and the sealing member 50 has been compressed due to tightening of the hose clamp 44.
Fig. 3A illustrates a cross-sectional side view of a tapered member 8 according to the invention, and Fig. 3B illustrates a top view of the tapered member 8 shown in Fig. 3A. The cross-sectional view in Fig. 3A corresponds to a sectional cut provided along a cutting line A shown in Fig. 3B.
The tapered member 8 comprises a radially protruding contact portion
10. The angle φ between the tapered member 8 and the contact portion 10 is about 150 degrees. The tapered member 8 is provided with a number of cutting markings M' allowing the user of the pipe flashing to cut the top portion of the tapered member 8 in order to make it fit a pipe of a predefined dimension. The cutting markings M' are shown as circular markings in Fig. 3B. Each marking M' is associated with a corresponding text indicating the dimension of the pipe (e.g. the pipe outside diameter and wall thickness). In Fig. 3A, a first and second cutting line for providing openings having a diameter of Di, D2, respectively, are shown.
The tapered member 8 has a longitudinal axis X and is symmetrical. The tapered member 8 has a frusto-conical geometry.
Fig. 4A illustrates a cross-sectional side view of an attachment ring 30 according to the invention, and Fig. 4B illustrates a top view of the attachment ring 30 shown in Fig. 4A. The cross-sectional view in Fig. 4A corresponds to a sectional cut provided along a cutting line A shown in Fig. 4B.
The attachment ring 30 comprises a plane base structure 34 and a protruding portion 32. The base structure 34 extends perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis Y of the attachment ring 30. The protruding portion 32 is cylindrical and extends parallel to the longitudinal axis Y of the attachment ring 30. The attachment ring 30 is open in both the top portion and the bottom portion.
Fig. 5A illustrates a cross-sectional side view of a dome member 4 according to the invention, whereas Fig. 5B illustrates a top view of the dome member 4 shown in Fig. 5A. The cross-sectional view in Fig. 5A corresponds to a sectional cut provided along a cutting line A shown in Fig. 5B.
The dome member 4 comprises a hemispheric top portion and a cylindrical portion 36 provided in the bottom end of the semi-spherical top portion.
A cutting line L is indicated in Fig. 5A. The cutting line L is intended to illustrate where to cut an opening in the dome member 4. The cutting line L and thus the position of the opening established by cutting the dome member 4 along the cutting line L, depends on the roof pitch. Accordingly, the user can identify which predefined cutting line L to use cutting an opening in the dome member 4 and hereafter cut an opening positioned in order to allow the dome to be attached to a roof having a predefined roof pitch.
In Fig. 5B, it can be seen that the dome member 4 is provided with a plurality of cutting markings M corresponding to different roof pitches (indicated as numbers indicating the roof pitches measured as angles).
Fig. 6A illustrates a cross-sectional side view of a dome member 4 according to the invention attached to a base portion 6 by means of an attachment ring 30 and screws 40. The attachment ring 30 comprises a plane base structure 34 and a protruding portion 32. The base structure 34 extends perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the attachment ring 30. The protruding portion 32 is cylindrical and extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the attachment ring 30 that is open in both the top portion and the bottom portion.
The base portion 6 is made in a stretchable metal (e.g. aluminium) grid, embedded in a flexible material (e.g. a polymer rubber). The base portion 6 can be formed in such a manner that its geometry corresponds to the outer geometry of the roof structure to which it is intended to be attached. The lower side of the base portion 6 is provided with an adhesive 38 configured to allow for an easy and fast attachment to a roof structure. A protective foil (not shown) may preferably be removably attached to the adhesive 38 in order to prevent it from sticking to the surroundings during storage and transportation.
By means of the attachment ring and the screws 40, it is possible to sandwich the base portion 6 between the dome member 4 and the protruding portion 32 of the attachment ring 30.
Fig. 6B illustrates a schematic, cross-sectional view of a building 22 provided with a stove 46 connected to a chimney pipe 24 sealed by a pipe flashing 2 according to the invention. The building 22 has a roof 20 covered by roof tile 42, 42'.
The pipe flashing 2 comprises a dome member 4 attached to a base portion 6 attached to the roof 20. The lower end of the base portion 6 is attached to an underlying tile 42'. The uppermost portion of the base portion 6 is arranged below a tile 42 arranged above the uppermost portion of the base portion 6. Accordingly, the base portion 6 guides rain water away and seal the dome member 4 against it.
The pipe flashing 2 comprises a tapered member 8 arranged on the top portion of the dome member 4. The tapered member 8 may be screwed into the underlying dome member 4 by using screws (not shown).
The chimney pipe 24 extends vertically through the roof 20 via the dome member 4 and the tapered member 8. The chimney pipe 24 is provided with a chimney cap 26.
Fig. 6C illustrates a schematic, close-up view of the pipe flashing 2 shown in Fig. 6B. It can be seen that the pipe flashing 2 comprises a dome member 4 attached to a base portion 6 by means of an attachment ring 30 having a plane base structure 34 and a protruding portion 32 like illustrated in Fig. 6A. The uppermost portion of the base portion 6 is arranged under a tile 42.
The pipe flashing 2 comprises a tapered member 8 arranged on the top portion of the dome member 4. The tapered member 8 comprises a contact portion 10 shaped to bear against the dome member 4 in a manner in which full contact is established between the contact portion 10 and the outside surface of the dome member 4. The tapered member 8 is sealingly attached to the chimney pipe 24 by means of a band clamp 12 and a hose clamp 44 clamped around the upper portion of the band clamp 12. The band clamp 12 seals against the chimney pipe 24 and provides a proper attachment of the band clamp 12 to the chimney pipe 24.

The pipe flashing 2 comprises a dome member 4 attached to a base portion 6 that is attached to the underlying structure. In Fig. 7A, Fig. 7B and Fig. 7C the uppermost end of the base portion 6 is arranged under a tile 42, whereas the lowermost portion of the base portion 6 is attached on top of a tile 42'.
In Fig. 7A, Fig. 7B and Fig. 7C, the dome member 4 is provided with an opening. The opening is circular and extends horizontally in Fig. 7A, Fig. 7B and Fig. 7C. A tapered member 8 having a contact portion 10 is attached to the dome member 4 and covers the opening in the dome member 4.
In Fig. 7A, the pipe 24 is relatively thin. Accordingly, only a miner portion of the top of the tapered member 8 is cut away in order to make the top portion of the tapered member fit to the pipe 24. The tapered member is cut at the position I.
In Fig. 7B, the pipe 24 is slightly larger than the pipe in Fig. 7A. Accordingly, a larger portion than in Fig. 7A of the top of the tapered member 8 is cut away in order to make the top portion of the tapered member fit to the pipe 24. The tapered portion is cut at the position II.
In Fig. 7C, the pipe 24 is slightly larger than the pipe in Fig. 7B. Accordingly, a larger portion than in Fig. 7B of the top of the tapered member 8 is cut away in order to make the top portion of the tapered member fit to the pipe 24. The tapered member 8 is cut at the position
III.
Accordingly, the pipe flashing 2 according to the invention can be used to seal against pipes having different thicknesses/diameters. The tapered member 8 is adjusted by cutting a part of the top portion of the tapered member 8 hereby fitting the inner geometry of the top portion of the tapered member 8 corresponding to the outer geometry of the pipe 24.
Fig. 7D illustrates a cross-sectional view of a pipe flashing 2 according to the invention mounted to seal against a pipe 24 extending through a roof structure 20 having a first roof pitch ai.
Fig. 7E illustrates a cross-sectional view of a pipe flashing 2 according to the invention mounted to seal against a pipe 24 extending through a roof structure 20 having a second steeper roof pitch 0C2 than the roof structure shown in Fig. 7D. Accordingly, the pipe flashing 2 according to the invention can be used to seal against pipes extending through roof structures with various roof pitches.
The pipe flashing 2 comprises a dome member 4 attached to a base portion 6 that is attached to the underlying structure. In Fig. 7D and Fig. 7EC, the uppermost end of the base portion 6 is arranged under a tile 42, whereas the lowermost portion of the base portion 6 is attached on top of a tile 42'.
