The present invention relates to an installation kit for a window and window lining.
When installing windows in a fapade or a roof, it is desirable to make the transition between the window frame and the inner wall of the room of the building smooth and of a pleasant appearance. The transition is most often made up of a so-called window lining having dimensions to span the distance between the inner side of the window frame to the inner wall.
In windows installed in a facade, the lining is constituted basically of a box-shaped element composed of a set of rectangular lining panels positioned at right angles to the window frame. The members are traditionally formed of panels or plates of such materials as plywood, gypsum or chipboard.
In windows mounted in an inclined roof, the installation conditions are more complicated. This is applicable, whether the window and the window lining are intended for installation in a newly erected building, during complete refurbishing including several parts of the roof construction and/or the interior, or for renovation purposes involving replacement of as few components as possible.
First, this is due to the geometry of the lining, as its side members are positioned at right angles to the window frame, as in facade windows, but the top member is most often virtually horizontal and the bottom member vertical, or the top and bottom assume other angles to the window frame. A number of grounds for this particular design exist, including the best warm air circulation across the inner pane surface, the best influx of light and the best view.
Furthermore, the location of the window in the roof entails that special precautions need to be taken in order to ensure that a weather-tight transition to the roof surface is provided and that the insulation positioned between the window and the window lining on one hand, and the roof construction on the other is not damaged, for instance by moisture. Commercially available insulation collars and vapour barrier collars provide for a tight connection between the window and the roof construction.
When replacing a roof window, there might be instances where it is not possible or desirable to remove the existing lining. In such cases, adaptation of the lining and the exterior cover members including the flashing may be required, just as special mounting brackets may be necessary. It is furthermore important to accommodate varying installation levels of the window, and the height of the window frame, as some windows are installed deeper than average in the roof surface to ensure obtain a better design or improved heat insulation, just as the height of the window frame, i.e. the dimension in the direction from the interior to the exterior, may vary. During the installation process, it is important to ascertain that either a separate membrane or an existing vapour barrier collar is connected to the window frame, for instance with butyl or other appropriate sealant, to ensure tightness. Where the window aperture meets the interior ceiling, the membrane must be connected to the vapour barrier of the roof construction by means of tape and/or tight overlapping joint.
During all of these processes, several components need to be handled, and various sizes and positions of the individual components need to be accommodated. In combination with the requirements to tightness and accurate positioning, the installation of a window and the connection to the window lining and other parts of the weather-shield present great challenges.
With this background it is an object of the invention to provide an installation kit for a window and window lining, by which the installation is facilitated and made more flexible.
This and further objects are met by an installation kit comprising at least one installation element including a frame engagement portion adapted to cooperate with a frame of the window, a lining engagement portion and means for cooperating with at least one accessory assembly.
In this manner, a versatile installation kit is provided, by which the installation element or elements of the installation kit not merely functions as the joint between the window frame and the lining, but which also facilitates the installation of one or more accessory assemblies. By the provision of such an installation element, not only is the installation rendered more simple, as
AWA#136033 - Replacement element - 5777/DK the easily handled installation element may be connected either to the window frame or to the lining and in the order suiting the installation situation in question, but the installation element is also prepared for accommodation of a wide variety of accessory assemblies.
Further embodiments and advantages are set forth in the dependent claims, and will be apparent from the accompanying description of preferred embodiments.
In the following the invention will be described in further detail by means of examples of embodiments with reference to the schematic drawings, in which

In Figs 1 and 2, a window generally designated 1 and of a kind known per se is shown, by itself and in its mounted condition in an inclined roof. The window 1 comprises a sash 2 hingedly connected to a frame 3 havAWA#136033 - Replacement element - 5777/DK ing a top member 31, a bottom member 32 and two side members 33, 34. The sash 2 carries a pane 4.
The window frame members 31,32, 33, 34 are each provided with a groove 5 in the respective bottom face, i.e. the side of the frame member intended to face the interior of the building in which the window is installed, to cooperate with a window lining 9 to be described in further detail below. The lining 9 comprises, in a well-known manner, four lining panels not described in further detail.
Of the supporting roof construction, rafter 61, batten 62 and counterbatten 63 are shown. Insulation 71 in the form of for instance mineral wool and a pre-fabricated insulation frame 72 surround the window frame 3 behind the lining 9.
A vapour barrier 8 mounted in connection with the frame 3 protects the insulation from moisture emanating from warm and damp interior air. Other components not described in detail form part of the weather-shield of the roof and include frame and sash claddings and covers, flashings, roofing felt and underroof.
In the following, an installation kit according to the invention will be described in further detail, referring first to Figs 3 to 10 showing one embodiment of an installation element 10.
In Fig. 3, the window frame 3 is represented by one of its frame members, which in principle could be any one of the top, bottom or side members. As shown, the installation element 10 is inserted between the window frame 3 and the lining 9. Details of the installation element 10 will be described with particular reference to Figs 5 to 7.
The installation element 10 includes a frame engagement portion 12 cooperating with the window frame 3 and a lining engagement portion 15. Furthermore, the installation element is prepared for cooperation with one or more accessory assemblies. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the cooperating means include a reception area for holding the vapour barrier 8, for instance mechanically, by means of friction, adhesion, or in any other manner.
In the embodiment shown, the installation element 10 is formed as a
AWA#136033 - Replacement element - 5777/DK longitudinally extending element having a body portion 11 in conjunction with the frame engagement portion 12, and with an inward portion 13 and an outward portion 14. The lining engagement portion is formed as a groove 15 extending between the body portion 11, the inward portion 13 and the outward portion 14. As may be seen, in the installation kit for this window frame 3 the installation element 10 has a shape which is complementary to the shape of the window frame 3.
In the installation situation in Fig. 4, the installation element 10 cooperates with a frame 30 that rather than a groove as in the window frame 3 of Fig. 3 has a recess 305. The installation element 10 hence provides for a possibility of stabilizing the lining 9 and eases installation.
The installation element 10 may in principle be formed from any suitable material, but in a presently preferred embodiment, the installation element 10 is formed as a profile element comprising a set of longitudinally extending tracks 120, 130, 140, preferably manufactured by an extruded profile of a suitable material such as PVC, cut into pieces of appropriate lengths.
Further details of the installation element 10 include a groove facing surface 111 and an inclined surface 112 of the body portion; an outward surface 121, a frame facing surface 122 and an inward surface 123 of the frame engagement portion 12; an inward surface 131, a bridge surface 132 and a groove facing surface 133 of the inward surface; and a groove facing surface 141, an inclined surface 142, an outward surface 143 and a bridge surface 144. In the specific embodiment, the lining engagement portion formed by groove 15 is thus in turn formed by groove facing surfaces 111, 133 and 141.
Eventually, the frame engagement portion 12 includes a frame facing surface 122 and a set of apertures 16 penetrating said frame facing surface 122 for receiving fastening means 50 (cf. Fig. 8).
With particular reference to Figs 8 to 10, the mounting of an installation set including four installation elements 10 during connection to a respective window frame member 31 -34 is shown.
In addition to the accessory assembly in the form of a vapour barrier 8, such accessory assemblies also include a ventilation arrangement in anAWA#136033 - Replacement element - 5777/DK other embodiment of the invention.
In the further embodiment of Fig. 11, the installation element 10” is formed as a longitudinally extending element having a body portion 11 in conjunction with the frame engagement portion 12, and with an inward portion 13 and an outward portion 14, wherein the lining engagement portion is formed as a groove extending between the body portion 11, the inward portion 13 and the outward portion 14, and wherein the groove comprises a first groove portion 151 and a second groove portion 152 located at different levels.
Eventually, in the still further embodiment of Figs 12 to 14, the instal10 lation element 10”’ is formed as a longitudinally extending element having a body portion 11 in conjunction with the frame engagement portion 12, and with an inward portion 13 and an outward portion 14, and wherein the inward portion 13 is provided with a ventilation aperture 191 in connection with a through-going passage 192 for connection to a manifold member 40. A venti15 lation device 90 is located in the ventilation aperture 191 to open and close for ventilation. The manifold member 40 is adapted to form a connection with the passage 192 in one side and with the surroundings, possibly via a heating means.
Further accessory assemblies may be chosen from the group com20 prising lighting appliances, heat or cold transmitting devices, wiring, sound dampening means, and sash components, including a barrel bolt.
The invention should not be regarded as being limited to the embodiments shown in the drawings and described in the above. Several modifications and combinations may be carried out within the scope of the appended claims.
The different features of the embodiments may be combined.
