Abstract

Patient can inhale a powder or liq. via mouth or nostril for the treatment of bronchial complaints etc.. The inhaler comprises a shallow, cylindrical box inside which a circular disc blister-pack of plastic ampoules contg. inhalant is supported to be rotatably coaxially with the box. The ampoules are evenly spaced around a circle centred on the axis of disc rotation. The blister-pack is rotated by a plate which sits on top of the pack, engaging each ampoule in a hole in the plate. The plate has an axial button projecting through the lid of the box for turning the plate and blister-pack. The plate has register catches on a pitch circle to locate the plate with each ampoule in turn beneath a spring-loaded plunger which can be depressed to break open the ampoule. Once the inhalant is released, the patient sucks or inhales by nostril from a box outlet pipe. The ampoules are much more stable and have greater shelf life than gelatin capsules, previously used to contain inhalants. The blister-packs are inexpensive to make and easy to store. Several packs can be carried in a false bottom of the inhaler.

A nozzle 32 protrudes from the cylindrical wall of the housing 30 in a substantially radial direction and communicates with the interior of chamber 31. A perforated protective plate 33 is located at the entrance to the mouthpiece 32. A pin 41 or the like and with radial projections 42 extends centrally from the support member 35 through a hole 43 at the bottom of the housing 30 and into an opening 44 of complementary shape in a pin 45 of the 40 member 39. The pin 45 passes through the hole 43, and the pin 41 with the projections 42 engages in the opening 44 so that rotation of the portion 39 causes the support portion 35 to rotate accordingly. A removable cover 46 fits on top of housing 30. In cover 46, an opening 47 is provided which engages with a projection 4Θ of housing 30 to properly locate the cover. The cover 46 has a support 49 on which an arm or trigger 50 is pivotally mounted. A piston 51 5 is mounted on the arm or trigger 50 and extends through a hole 52 in the cover.
