Abstract

An adhesive transdermal dual-layer dosing system, which can provide delayed release of a pharmaceutically active drug to the skin of a (human) patient, has a first constituent layer, which is an essentially plane layer of an at least partially crosslinked acrylic adhesive containing a pharmaceutically active drug. The plane layer is formed from a flexible, self-supporting cross- linked acrylate with sufficient adhesive capacity, durability and strength, by means of which intimate diffusion contact is maintained with the patient's skin for a period of at least 24 hours without damage to the physical integrity of the layer. The plane layer is capable of retaining a sufficient quantity of a pharmaceutically active drug dispersed therein to supply a pharmaceutically effective quantity of the drug to the skin over a period of 24 hours without dissolving of the at least partially crosslinked acrylic adhesive. The system also contains a second constituent layer closely bonded to one side of the first constituent layer. The second constituent layer is resistant to the passage of the pharmaceutically active drug from the first constituent layer. Methods for the manufacture of the first constituent layer and the dosing system are also described.
