Abstract

When amplifying audio signals, in order to avoid over-modulation distortion, that is clipping, of unforeseen strong signal amplitudes it is usual to limit these in a special limiting circuit 6 prior to the amplification in such a way that the limited amplitudes appear with rounded amplitude peaks (soft clipping) after which they can be amplified with low distortion. With regard to the operation of the amplifier, the limiting level of the limiting circuit 6 is selected so that it is ensured that at all times over-modulating amplitudes will be subjected to soft clipping at a level which is lower than the input threshold level at which the amplifier is operated at maximum. However, this creates a difference band in between the threshold level and the limiting level which means that unnecessary and distortion- increasing soft clipping will be carried out at the amplitude peaks which are situated in this band. By detecting according to the invention a commencing over- modulation at the output stage of the amplifier and on the basis of this activating the limiting circuit 6 so that during a subsequent clipping period it carries out soft clipping on over-modulating input amplitudes at a limiting level which is caused to correspond to the threshold level, the situation is achieved that the limiting circuit will only be operative when there is a need for it and that during these periods soft clipping will be carried out at such a level that the rounded amplitudes will be able to affect the amplifier at maximum and no more. Thus unnecessary soft clipping will not take place and the part of the distortion originating from the amplitude deformation associated with soft clipping will thereby be reduced to an acceptable moderate amount. <IMAGE>
