Abstract

a) Method for the destruction of used electric batteries and the recovery of the different components, b) method characterised in that the batteries are broken up by crushing so as to obtain a crushed mixture formed of elements having a size less than about 1 cm; the crushed mixture is sieved so as to subdivide it into a powder and a granulate; the granulate is treated by flotation so as to subdivide it into a heavy fraction and a light fraction; the previously-collected flotation liquor and the powder are gathered together and the mixture of powders thus obtained is treated with the aid of sulphuric acid; the mixture of powders thus treated is filtered so as to separate a filtration cake from a filtration solution; the heavy fraction obtained following the flotation step is treated in a sulphonitric medium so as to subdivide it into a digestion solution and an insoluble fraction; the filtration solution and the digestion solution are combined into an acid solution which is treated with copper metal so as to precipitate the metals which are more electropositive than copper and which may be present in the solution, in particular mercury and if appropriate silver and/or through electroplating; and the metals, in particular the precipitated mercury, are recovered.
