Abstract

To determine the phagocytosis activity of leukocytes, a sample of whole blood is mixed with a defined amount of bacteria, preferably E. coli, labelled with FITC, and incubated with shaking at a temperature of 30 to 45 DEG C for 5 to 60 minutes, the phagocytosis is stopped by cooling, a quenching substance is added, the erythrocytes present in the solution are lysed, a fluorescent DNA dye is added, and subsequently the fluorescence is quantified in a fluorescence cytometer.
