DEUTSCHES PATENTAMTGERMAN PATENT OFFICE
The invention relates to a process for the production of dicyclopentadienyl iron and its low molecular weight alkyl derivatives.
Dieses Verfahren istDicyclopentadienyl iron and its low molecular weight alkyl derivatives are used as anti-knock agents for internal combustion engines with spark ignition and have been used in various ways manufactured. However, all known methods have more or less disadvantages, which one Making production uneconomical on a technical scale. So was z. B. dicyclopentadienyl iron first by Kealy and Pauson, Nature, Vol. i68, 1951, p. 1039, by reacting a cyclopentadienylmagnesium hylogenide made with anhydrous ferric chloride in ether. This procedure is
deshalb offensichtlich wenig geeignet, weil ein flüchtiges und äußerst leicht entflammbares Lösungsmittel verwendet wird.therefore obviously unsuitable because it is a volatile and extremely easily flammable solvent is used.
A method for producing dicyclopentadienyl iron has also been proposed in which Sodium cyclopentadienyl with an iron salt in an inert solvent, e.g. B. ether implemented will. Again, a volatile solvent is used, which means there is a risk of accidents for everyone technical process brings with it.
Obwohl dieses zuletzt genannte Verfahren für eine großtechnische Herstellung geeignetAnother method of making dicyclopentadienyl iron, where cyclopentadiene is reacted with iron pentacarbonyl, was also already suggested. Although this last-mentioned process is suitable for large-scale production

ist, wird dabei doch äußerst giftiges Eisenpentacarbonyl verwendet.extremely toxic iron pentacarbonyl is used.
Miller, Treboth and Tremaine have in Journal of the Chemical Society (London), 1952, pp. 632 to 635, a process for the preparation of dicyclopentadienyl iron described, in which cyclopentadiene is reacted with a reduced, doubly activated catalyst for ammonia production. However, this process has the disadvantage that the catalyst becomes ineffective after a few minutes and no more dicyclopentadienyl iron is formed.
Finally, a process for the production of dicyclopentadienyl iron has also been proposed in which the organic iron compound is obtained directly from cyclopentadiene and an iron-supplying compound. In this method, cyclopentadiene is reacted in the vapor state with pyrophoric ferrous oxide at temperatures of about 300 to 450 0th Although this process represents an undeniable improvement over the previously known processes, it has the disadvantage that the pyrophoric ferrous oxide has to be produced in an additional process step by pyrolysis of ferrous salts of carbonaceous acids.
The invention now relates to a novel and improved process for the production of dicyclopentadienyl iron and its low molecular weight alkyl derivatives.
Der Reaktionsraum wird auf etwaAccording to the invention, a gaseous mixture of cyclopentadiene or dicyclopentadiene and a reducing gas passed over ferric oxide, and the vapors of the formed in the reaction chamber Dicyclopentadienyl iron are condensed. In the same way can be a gaseous mixture of one substituted by a low molecular weight alkyl group cyclopentadiene and one reducing acting gas are passed over ferric oxide. The usual embodiment of the invention is extreme simple and economical and does not require any cumbersome device. You essentially need nothing more than a reaction space consisting of a quartz or metal tube containing ferric oxide, by which cyclopentadiene and z. B. hydrogen are passed. The reaction space is about
Die folgenden Beispiele erläutern die Erfindung.275 to 400 0 , and the dicyclopentadienyl iron sublimes to the extent that it is formed from the reaction space and can be obtained by cooling. The product obtained is extremely pure and can be used immediately.
The following examples illustrate the invention.
Beispiel 1
Dicyclopentadienyleisenexample 1
Dicyclopentadienyl iron
F = 1730.10 g of ferric oxide with the usual degree of purity are mixed with 112 g of glass beads with a diameter of about 0.44 cm in order to enlarge the surface of the oxide available for conversion, whereupon the mixture is introduced into a reaction tube. The reaction tube consists of Pyrex glass with a diameter of 2.54 cm, a length of 63.5 cm and a standardized connecting joint. The mixture of glass beads and ferric oxide is sealed with a glass wool stopper approximately 10.16 cm from the end of the reaction tube. The tube is placed in a horizontally stored electric furnace and is heated to 300 ° while passing a hydrogen stream of 250 ecm per minute through the reaction tube. The amount of hydrogen flow is measured with a calibrated ammeter. The hydrogen is allowed to flow through for 20 minutes and the flow rate is then reduced to 85 ecm per minute. Before entering the reaction space, it bubbles through 100 g of cyclopentadiene at 0 °. The ratio of hydrogen to cyclopentadiene in the stream is appropriately modified by changing the temperature of the cyclopentadiene. After about 3 minutes the formation of dicyclopentadienyl iron is noticed. During the five hour reaction, 34.4 g of cyclopentadiene are consumed, of which 25.7 g are collected in a trap located in a dry ice-acetone bath. 5.04 g of dicyclopentadienyl iron are collected in the form of orange crystals in the flask at the outlet end of the reaction tube, which serves as a cooling vessel. F = 173 0 .
Die folgende Tabelle gibt die bei Änderung des Molverhältnisses von Wasserstoff zu Cyclopentadien erhaltenen Ergebnisse wieder:The following table shows the changes in the molar ratio of hydrogen to cyclopentadiene obtained results again:

The influence of hydrogen on the effectiveness of the iron oxide catalyst is from the following tests described:
When the temperature of 300 0 is reached, the hydrogen flow of 250 ecm per minute is maintained for a further 30 minutes. The flow of hydrogen is then switched off and nitrogen is passed through at a rate of 85 ecm per minute. Cyclopentadiene from o ° pearls and enter into the reaction tube. The results obtained using nitrogen as the carrier gas are shown in the table below together with the test results obtained using hydrogen at a rate of 85 ecm per minute:

Formation of dicyclopentadienyl iron (mg per minute)
From the compilation it can be seen that the flow of hydrogen leads to the continuous formation of Dicyclopentadienyl iron, even if the ferric oxide was first treated with hydrogen, all the time must be passed through the reaction tube.
Das Gewicht des auf diese Weise erhaltenen Dicyclopentadienyleisens beträgt 3,15 g, was einer 4i,4°/pigen Umwandlung und einer 27,Q,°/0igen Ausbeute entspricht.10 g of ferric oxide are mixed with glass beads as in Example 1 and introduced into the reaction tube. The reaction tube is placed in a vertical electric furnace and is heated to 325 ° while passing through a hydrogen stream of 250 ecm per minute. When this temperature has been reached, the hydrogen flow is passed through for a further 10 minutes and then reduced to 85 ecm per minute, while at the same time dicycloperitadiene is introduced drop by drop directly into the reaction tube, at a rate of about one drop at intervals of 20 S6-hours . During the five-hour reaction, 19.3 g of dicyclopentadiene are consumed, of which 11.3 g are recovered as cyclopentadiene in a case in a dry ice-acetone bath. The weight of the Dicyclopentadienyleisens thus obtained is 3.15 g, which corresponds to a 4i, 4 ° / pigen conversion and 27, Q, corresponds ° / 0 yield.

A 40.6 cm long Pyrex glass tube with a diameter of 2.54 cm is used as the reaction space and charged with 10 g of ferric oxide as in Example i, but without the addition of glass beads. The temperature is brought to 300 0 . Carbon monoxide is then allowed to sweep over the ferric oxide at a rate of 100 ecm per minute for 25 minutes and the carbon monoxide is finally passed through cyclopentadiene, which is kept at 0 °, shortly before it enters the reaction chamber. The cyclopentadiene is evaporated at a rate of 1.33 g per hour. Dicyclopentadienyl iron forms within 5 minutes and 0.55 g has formed after 90 minutes. This corresponds to a yield of 19.6%, based on cyclopentadiene.
The reaction tube comes into a horizontally mounted electrical furnace and ECM by passing a hydrogen stream of 250 per minute, heated to 300 0th After the temperature of 300 0 has been reached , the hydrogen stream is passed through for a further 10 minutes and its flow rate is then reduced to 85 ecm per minute, while at the same time the dimer of methylcyclopentadiene is transferred at a rate of one drop at intervals of 40 seconds to 260 to 280 ° heated flask. The flask into which the dimeric methylcyclopentadiene is added dropwise is arranged so that the stream of hydrogen washes away the vaporized compound and introduces it into the reaction tube. During the four-hour reaction time, 10.5 g of the dimeric methylcyclopentadiene are consumed, of which 7 g are recovered in a trap located in a dry ice-acetone bath.
Die Identität des auf diese Weise hergestellten Bis-(methyl-The weight of the thus obtained bis (methylcyclopentadienyl) -eisens is 1.3 g, corresponding to a 33.5 ° / o by weight conversion and a 27.8 ° / 0 yield strength; reddish liquid, F. = 33 0 . As can be seen from the examples, the reaction temperatures in the process according to the invention are between about 275 and about 400 ° . The ratio of reducing gas to cyclopentadiene is important only insofar as some reducing gas must be present. It is believed that the reducing gas is required to convert the ferric oxide into an effective iron oxide. The preferred molar ratio of reducing gas to cyclopentadiene is about 1: 1, although lower and higher ratios are also applicable. If the ratio of reducing gas to cyclopentadiene is more than about 2: 1, the actual amount of reducing gas required to activate the ferric oxide is far exceeded and a large amount of gas is unnecessarily lost. On the other hand, if the ratio is far below about 1: 1, the amount of cyclopentadiene contained in the gas is so great that not all can be converted in the available reaction time, and a large part must therefore be returned to the cycle. The commercially available compounds used in the process according to the invention do not need to be purified before they are used. The commercially available dicyclopentadiene can also easily be converted into cyclopentadiene. Low molecular weight alkylcyclopentadienes are understood as meaning those whose straight-chain or branched alkyl radical contains up to 4 carbon atoms. Also suitable as ferric oxide is that obtained directly from iron ores. The reducing gases hydrogen and carbon monoxide used in the process according to the invention can be of any origin, e.g. B. They can come from water gas or from the reaction of water vapor with methane. A mixture of reducing gases can also be used to carry out the method according to the invention.
It is believed that the reducing gas converts the ferric oxide into an effective form of a magnetic one Iron oxide, which then actually reacts, transferred. This assumption is supported by the fact that after the process according to the invention has been carried out for a long time, the initially non-magnetic ferric oxide becomes magnetic in the reaction space. X-ray examinations show that no ferrous oxide is present is. It has been found that in the absence of the reducing gas, only a small amount of dicyclopentadienyl iron is formed and implementation comes to a standstill after a short time. If that reducing gas initially at the usual reaction temperatures via the ferric oxide, but then the cyclopentadiene is passed over it without further supply of reducing gases, the yield obtained is very low, and the life of the iron oxide is then only extremely short. Only if a reducing gas is passed over the ferric oxide at the same time as the cyclopentadiene the process works satisfactorily and is economical even on an industrial scale.
