Description
The invention relates to a method for the production of p-xylylene dichloride or dibromide by a Reaction between benzene and a new kind of organic zinc compound.
It is known e.g. B. p-xylylene dichloride by exposure to formaldehyde, hydrogen chloride and zinc chloride to obtain benzene. It was found, however, that these reactions were undesirable Side reactions occur; z. B. the reaction products are contaminated with diphenylmethane. For the The emergence of side reactions and the formation of impurities are that as Friedel-Crafts reagent acting zinc chloride and the water present in the reaction largely responsible close.
Bei Verwendung ganz bestimmter molekularer Mengen der Reaktionsteilnehmer entsteht allmählich eineIt has been found that p-xylylene dichloride or p-xylylene dibromide is obtained if one is on benzene allows novel, well-defined organic zinc compound to act. This organic zinc compound arises when dry chlorine or hydrogen bromide is dissolved in a suspension of formaldehyde or Introduces paraformaldehyde and the corresponding zinc halide. As a suspending agent, for. B. Carbon tetrachloride or another inert suspending agent can be used. The introduction of Chlorbzw. Hydrogen bromide is first carried out in the cold. Then it is heated moderately to about 40 to 60 ° C, stirring at the same time. When using very specific molecular quantities the reactant gradually emerges one
The top layer consists of the Suspending agent and still contains small amounts of the dibalogenide dimethyl ether which is formed at the same time. The lower clear layer was found to be an addition compound between zinc halide, formaldehyde and hydrogen halide. Due to incoming Investigations, the following constitutional formula can be assumed for this connection:

Läßt man z. You can easily separate the lower layer and thus get a very reactive connection. If you let z. B. this very high-energy compound on benzene in the presence of an inert diluent have an effect and sets the reaction going by gentle warming, so arises in one exothermic reaction p-xylylene dihalide. By the use of inert diluents, the course of the reaction is mitigated and thus controlled. This reaction is carried out under normal pressure. But it is also possible that one works with the application of pressure.
Dry hydrogen chloride is passed through a suspension consisting of 150 g of carbon tetrachloride, 60 g of paraformaldehyde and 68 g of zinc chloride with constant stirring and at temperatures slowly rising from 20 to 65 ° in a moderately strong current. Two layers are formed, of which the lower one can be separated and represents the above-mentioned organic zinc chloride compound. 128 g of this compound are mixed with 20 g of benzene, and the reaction with mild heating is set to about 45 0, most 6o ° in gear. A strongly exothermic reaction occurs. In the further course, the reaction temperature is kept at 40 to 45 ° until p-xylylene dichloride is completely formed, which is recrystallized from methanol.
The yield of pure p-xylylene dichloride is 60%, based on the starting material.
Ausbeute 55%.128 g of the zinc-chloride compound prepared as in Example 1 are allowed to act on one another in the presence of carbon tetrachloride (which serves as an inert diluent) and 20 g of benzene with turbines. During the reaction one heats up to a maximum of 6o ? and then lets the p-xylylene dichloride formed precipitate in the cold. It is recrystallized from methanol. Yield 55%.
The carbon tetrachloride acting as a diluent can also be circulated, so that at times there is an increase in concentration. In addition, the carbon tetrachloride can be used during the reaction are partly removed and, if necessary, with fresh diluent be replaced.
Is passed through a 300 g of carbon tetrachloride, 60 g of paraformaldehyde and 112.5 g of zinc bromide existing suspension under constant stirring and slowly from 20 to 50 0 increasing temperatures in moderately strong stream of dry hydrogen bromide therethrough. Two layers are formed, of which the lower one can easily be separated and represents the organic zinc bromide compound mentioned.
Die Ausbeute beträgt etwa 60%.172.5 g of this compound are mixed with 20 g of benzene, and the reaction is initiated by gentle heating to about 45 to 50 0th The exothermic reaction then requires constant cooling to about 50 °. The xylylene dibromide is formed in the course of about 5 hours, which, recrystallized from methanol, has a melting point of 138 °. The yield is about 60%.
