Im allgemeinen verwendet man eisenemaillierte Schalen oder solche aus Steingut, Glas oder Kunststoff. Da jede Kühlschrankfirma einerseits ihrer Schale ein der Eigenart des Schrankes entsprechendes Aussehen; geben möchte, andererseits jedoch die Stückzahlen, die eine einzige: Firma braucht, nicht besonders groß sind, ist die Herstellung der Schalen verhältnismäßig teuer. Dies hängt damit zusammen, daß für jede Schalenart besondere Werkzeuge und Formen hergestellt werden müssen. Unter den gegebenen Umständen sind also eine ganze Reihe verschiedenartiger und verschieden großer Schalen im Handel und Gebrauch. Einfachere Schalen, die keine nach kunstgewerblichen Grundsätzen gestaltete Vorderwand haben, werden sowohl vom Kühlschrankhersteller als auch vom kaufenden Publikum abgelehnt. Ferner sind die eisenemaillierten und die Glasschalen auch im Gebrauch zu schwer. Außerdem brechen die Glasschalen leicht. Das gleiche gilt für Kunststoffschalen, die im übrigen auch eine zu geringe Wärmeleitfähigkeit haben, schon nach verhältnismäßig kurzem Gebrauch ein mattes Aussehen bekommen und schwer zu reinigen sind.
