Locking device for cases, especially roof boxes

for motor vehicles

Description

The invention relates to a locking device for suitcases, in particular roof boxes for motor vehicles, with two suitcase parts, namely a lower part and a lid, which can be pivoted towards each other on two parallel sides about a hinge axis via at least two hinges each, the hinges each consisting of a first hinge part associated with the lid and a second hinge part associated with the lower part, and in the closed position all hinge parts are connected to one another via an element forming the hinge axis and in order to pivot the lid about the hinge axis of the hinges associated with one of the sides, the hinge parts associated with the hinges on the other side are disconnected by moving the associated element, and furthermore there is a lock on each side.

A roof box for a motor vehicle with such a locking device is described in US 44 20 105. Two parallel sides of the roof box are provided with hinge parts that correspond to one another and are each designed as a sleeve. An elastic cable is used to connect the hinge parts, which is inserted through the eyelets formed. The elastic cable thus simultaneously forms the hinge axis.

To open the roof box from one of the two sides, the cable is pulled out on the side to be opened, so that the connection between the eyelets on the lid and the base is removed and the lid can be pivoted in relation to the base around the cable that forms the hinge axis of the other side. Furthermore, one of the pairs of eyelets on each side, which belong to the lid or base, is provided with an elongated hole that serves both to accommodate the cable and to accommodate a shackle of a lock, so that the base and lid are firmly connected to one another.

With this design, only an approximate guide can be achieved between the lid and the base, as the cable has to be threaded in by hand and therefore has to be elastic. In addition, threading is laborious in order to be able to release one of the sides. Threading or pulling out the cable requires considerable dexterity and practice. In addition, the strength of the cable is not suitable for providing secure guidance and holding if the roof box is so full that the lid has to be pressed onto the base.

The invention is based on the object of creating a locking device for a roof box, which can be opened from two parallel sides and which is easier to operate, i.e. it is possible to centrally lock or unlock the hinges on each side. In addition, the two parts should be securely held in place relative to one another in the closed position.

This object is achieved according to the invention in that for each hinge one of the hinge parts comprises a sleeve and the other of the hinge parts comprises a hinge pin which can be moved in the direction of the hinge axis into or out of engagement with the sleeve, that all hinge pins of the hinges belonging to one side are assigned to a common actuating rod which can be actuated on each side via a single lock and wherein the element forming the hinge axis is represented by the hinge pin.

The advantage of this solution is that rigid hinge pins are provided, each of which is connected to an actuating rod on each side, which forms the hinge axis. By assigning the hinge pins to an actuating rod, simple guidance is achieved. Threading is not necessary. All hinge pins assigned to an actuating rod are actuated simultaneously and move together into or out of engagement with the corresponding sleeves of the other hinge part.

This design creates a clearly defined and precise hinge axis. In addition, considerable strength is achieved, so that the lid is held securely in relation to the base when there is a load that leads to stresses on the lid.

In an embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the sleeve is part of the first hinge part assigned to the lid and the hinge pin is part of the second hinge part assigned to the lower part.

Preferably, the sleeve is attached to an angled arm provided with a mounting flange. The first hinge part is connected to the lid of the roof box via the mounting flange, for example by riveting.

To guide the operating rod, the second hinge parts are equipped with a bearing housing. The bearing housing is preferably firmly connected to the lower part. All bearing housings are aligned with one another and assigned to one side so that they guide the operating rod.

Preferably, a locking cylinder mounted in a bearing housing of one of the hinges assigned to one side serves to actuate the actuating rod. For this purpose, the actuating rod has

a polygonal pin onto which an operating lever is attached, in which an elongated hole is provided that runs vertically to the operating rod or hinge axis, into which an operating pin that is eccentrically attached to the locking cylinder engages to adjust the operating rod.

In order to achieve the centering of the bearing sleeves associated with the lid in relation to the hinge pins associated with the second hinge part when the lid is closed, each bearing housing of the second hinge part is provided with a centering recess which aligns the sleeves working with it in the direction of the hinge pin.

A favorable design in terms of strength is achieved by the fact that the hinge pins of all hinges belonging to one side are molded onto the corresponding operating rod, i.e. they are integrally connected to it.

In order to further increase the strength with which the cover is held in the closed position in relation to the base, the hinge pin is designed to pass through the sleeve when engaged and to enter a hole in the bearing housing. In this way, a type of two-section bearing is achieved.

In Figures 1 to 4, the roof box 1 is shown in different positions with regard to the position of the lid 3 in relation to the lower part. In Figure 1, only a top view of the upwardly open lower part 2 of the roof box 1 is visible. In Figure 2, the lid 3 is shown in the closed position in relation to the lower part 2. The lid 3 is offset in relation to the lower part 2 by two parallel

The first side 4, that is the left side, around which the lid 3, as shown in Figure 3, is pivoted upwards in relation to the lower part 2 into the open position. The hinges 6,7,8 assigned to this side 4 are used for this purpose and are distributed along the first side 4 at the upper edge of the lower part 2 or the lower edge of the lid 3. According to the illustration in Figure 4, the lid 3 is shown pivoted upwards in relation to the lower part 2 into the open position by the hinges 9,10,11 associated with the second, right side 5.

The hinge axis 12 is formed by the hinges 6, 7, 8 belonging to the first side 4, while the hinge axis 13 belongs to the second side 5 and is formed by the hinges 9, 10, 11. The hinges 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 serve on the one hand to form the hinge axes 12 and 13 and at the same time to fix the lid 3 in relation to the lower part 2 in the closed position shown in Figure 2. In Figures 2 to 4 it can be seen that the two middle hinges 7 and 10 each consist of a first hinge part 14 and 14a and a second hinge part 15 and 15a. The first hinge part 14 and 14a is firmly connected to the lid 3, while the second hinge part 15, 15a is firmly connected to the lower part 2. Furthermore, a lid support 16 is arranged between the lower part 2 and the lid 3, which serves to support the lid 3 in the open position relative to the lower part 2, as can be seen from Figures 3 and 4. The design of one of the middle hinges belonging to the two sides 4, 5, namely the hinge 7 belonging to side 4, is described in more detail below with reference to Figures 5 to 8.

The first hinge part 14 is assigned to the lid 3. This consists of a fastening flange 18 for fastening to the inside of the lid, specifically towards the lower edge of the same.

From this fastening flange 18, an arm 14 extends initially at a right angle inwards and then, at an acute angle, downwards towards the lower part 2. A sleeve 17 is attached to the lower free end of the arm 19, which has a bore 20 that is centered on the hinge axis 12. The second hinge part 15 is assigned to the lower part 2. An actuating lever 25 is placed on the polygonal pin 24 with a recess 26 shaped like the polygonal pin and is firmly connected to the actuating rod 23 via a connecting pin 27. The actuating lever 25 has an elongated hole 28, the axis 31 of which crosses the hinge axis 12 at a right angle at a distance. The hinge pin 30 is firmly connected to the actuating rod 23 via the fastening arm 29. Preferably, the hinge pin 30, the fastening arm 29 and the actuating rod 23 are formed in one piece. Furthermore, the bearing housing 21 has a receiving bore 32, which crosses the hinge axis 12 at right angles, for a locking cylinder 34, which is secured in the bearing housing 21 via a flange 35 with screws 38. Furthermore, a receiving sleeve 33 is inserted into the bearing housing 21 from the outside of the wall of the lower part 2. In Figure 8, the hinge 7 is shown in a position that corresponds to the opened position of the lid 3 in relation to the lower part 2 according to Figure 3. In order to be able to better absorb forces acting on the lid 3 in the closed position according to Figure 2, which result, for example, from a load stored in the interior of the roof box, a bore 42 is provided in the bearing housing 21, into which the hinge pin 30 dips after passing through the bore 20 of the sleeve 17. In addition, the bearing housing 21 is provided with a support surface 43 arranged on the side of the centering recess 39 opposite the bore 42, so that the hinge pin 30 is securely guided and held. The actuating rod 23 of each of the two sides 4, 5 is designed to be continuous, so that it also contains the hinge pin 30a, for example of the hinge 8 shown in Figure 9. The bearing housing 15b corresponds to that of the hinge 7, but it is not provided with a locking cylinder. This is not necessary because the hinge pin 30a belonging to the actuating rod 23 and used for locking is also moved into or out of engagement with the sleeve 17a of the hinge 8 by actuating the actuating rod 23 and with the aid of the locking cylinder 34 associated with the hinge 7. The second side 5 is provided with three hinges 9, 10, 11 in accordance with the first side 4, of which the middle hinge 10 is also equipped with a locking cylinder.
