Description
Magnetic pickups for musical instruments with steel strings Magnetic pickups are known to consist in principle of a permanent magnet and one in the field of this magnet arranged induction coil. This coil is used when playing the instrument steel strings made to vibrate, which are also in the field of the magnet, a frequency-accurate alternating voltage is generated. If the conditions are the same, it depends the amplitude of the alternating voltage of the cross-section and the magnetic properties the steel strings. In practice, however, the steel strings do not consist of uniform ones Materials, and especially the cross-sections of the strings are very different. Even Strings wound with copper wire are often used, mainly for the Generation of deeper tones. These differences affect the amplitude of the generated Tension so that, given the same spacing between the strings and the magnet, thinner strings produce smaller, thicker, larger stress amplitudes. Likewise produce copper-spun Strings with lower tensions than unwoven strings.
One has tried these differences in the alternating voltages that arise as volume differences in the electroacoustic playback noticeable, to compensate by placing the strings in the part that is in the magnetic field, polarized equally or in opposite directions with this. Since that is for the. Manufacturing The steel material used for the strings is only small and very different Has remanence, the effect of such measures is very small.
Furthermore, considerable amounts are produced with the known pickups Volume differences along the width of the string field due to the fact that magnets are often used that are shorter than the string field width. This is but the magnetic field around the outer strings is weaker than that of the middle strings. To this one To compensate for the deficiency., One uses pole pieces, which also apply the magnetic field should bring the outer strings. Because the permeability of the pole piece material natural boundaries and the thickness or the cross-section of the pole pieces constructive If there are limits, all of these measures only bring very unsatisfactory results.
The described and explained on the basis of the schematic drawings Invention helps the said; Abuses in a simple and effective way.
As Fig. I shows, the pickup according to the invention consists of dm permanent magnet i, around which a coil 2 is arranged. Which by the more or Strings 4, indicated by less thick points, are at the same distance from the magnet system. Experience has shown that the guitar, for example, has the two external strings are reproduced more quietly than the middle ones, in this case the permanent magnet has such a length that the two outer strings are above the ends of the magnet lie. Since the field over the magnet ends is stronger than over the rest of the magnet length, this increases the volume of these strings a little, and it should be noted is because: ß on the guitar, the one outside string has the smallest cross-section has, but the other is crazy.
In most cases, however, this measure alone will not be sufficient to completely compensate for the volume differences. Therefore, according to Fig. I to 3 between the magnet system and the strings a diaphragm 3 made of magnetically good conductive material Material, for example dynamo sheet, arranged to be adjustable. The more this aperture the magnetic field and the coil shields against the strings, the lower the amount Influence of the strings on the arrangement, the less that of the shielded ones AC voltage generated by strings.
Fig. 2 shows the diaphragm in a position which is the minimum, Fig. 3 in a position that gives the maximum shielding effect. This arrangement allows Consequently; to achieve a continuous change in the shielding effect, and it is easy in any case; Finding a f-stop setting that balances the volume optimally results. The shielding effect of the web connecting the panel parts is low and generally negligible; but it can also be eliminated entirely by the bars are made of non-magnetic material.
Another useful form of this volume compensation is shown in Figure 4 shown schematically. Here is the aperture in, the three partial apertures 3a, 3b and 3c divided, which are arranged individually adjustable. This arrangement permits an even more precisely differentiated volume compensation. Here, too, the connecting webs consist of non-magnetic materials between the diaphragm parts. It can the same applies to other musical instruments, depending on the number of strings Such partial diaphragms can be arranged for precise volume compensation of all strings.
Another way to balance the volume between the different To bring about strings, bribe by making the magnetic field at the points; on which strings that are played too loudly lie, due to a magnetic shunt more or less short-circuits between the north and south poles. But there is such a Arrangement requires a greater design effort, should this possibility are only hinted at here.
