The invention is directed to a brush for personal care and cosmetics, in particular a mascara brush with a plurality of fiber sections held between two twisted wire sections.

Brushes of the type in question come into contact with the human body and either on that occasion or during other handling pick up bacteria. Furthermore, since such brushes are often used in a moist environment, whether through mascara liquid or in the case of toothbrushes or other cosmetic brushes, the growth of bacteria on the fibres of these brushes is encouraged, resulting in an unhygienic surface condition and contamination of the brushes.

Especially in brushes where the fibers are held between two twisted wire sections, the fiber density in the area of the twisted wire core is very high and its surface is very large. This also encourages the settlement of bacteria.

Based on this, the invention is based on the object of designing brushes of the type in question in such a way that the settlement and proliferation of bacteria is largely prevented.

This object is achieved according to the invention in that the fibers are treated with an antimicrobial preparation.

Such fibers have been used for several years for floor mats and for wet cleaning devices. It has now been found that, surprisingly, when these fibers are used while maintaining the other quality characteristics, brushes of the type in question practically no longer become contaminated even after prolonged use and thus also meet strict hygiene requirements.

This effect can be achieved primarily with mascara brushes with bristles held between twisted wires. In principle, it can also be used for tooth cleaning brushes, although care must be taken to ensure that the agent used for the antimicrobial treatment is not harmful to the mucous membranes of the human mouth.

It is particularly advantageous if the fibers are made of plastic and the antimicrobial preparation is incorporated into the interior of the fiber during fiber production.

This ensures that the antimicrobial effect is maintained permanently and that no stripping effect or dissolution of a surface film occurs.

Nylon fibers or polypropylene fibers are particularly suitable as fibers for incorporating antimicrobial preparations, with nylon fibers in particular also proving to be excellent for use in mascara brushes.

The drawing shows a mascara brush which comprises a handle part 1 and a brush part 2.

The brush part 2 is formed by a U-shaped bent wire, wherein a plurality of bristles 4 are inserted between the wire sections 3 and secured against each other by twisting the two wire sections 3. The free end 5 of the twisted wire sections 3 is inserted into the handle part 1.

The bristles 4 are nylon bristles of a thickness known per se for the production of mascara brushes. As indicated in Figure 2, these nylon bristles or fibers are provided over their entire volume with an antimicrobial preparation 6, which accordingly cannot be rinsed or wiped off the surface and ensures a permanent antimicrobial effect.
