The invention relates to a packaging made of foldable material such as corrugated cardboard, paperboard or the like for packaging individual goods, the packaging comprising an upper part and a lower part which can be joined together telescopically to form a packaging which is closed on all sides, the upper and lower parts each have two vertically extended side walls lying opposite one another ^and the vertically extended side walls of each part each overlap the non-vertically extended side walls of the other part in the joined state.

A packaging of the type mentioned at the beginning is known (DE-GM 88 12 855.5), in which a display tray designed as a lower part has a window in at least one side wall and a slip lid designed as an upper part has a side wall that closes the window. This means that the side walls of the slip lid are closed where the display tray has windows, and the slip lid is equipped with windows where the display tray has closed walls. In a further embodiment of this publication, two opposing windows of the display tray and the slip lid are open at the top or bottom. Furthermore, a folding box for packaging a shock-sensitive product, in particular a light metal rim, is known (DE-GM 88 16 424), with which a simple packaging of shock-sensitive products is possible without complex interior fittings and without Styrofoam rings or the like, and these should be adequately protected. In addition, each intermediate part of the unfolding results in at least one additional shock-absorbing layer of material on the base part of the folding box to protect a rim flange. The intermediate parts are only located at those points on the (flat) unfolding that would otherwise be completely or largely subject to material waste during the production of the unfolding. Furthermore, with this folding box, a point on the base part can be reached with three layers of material if intermediate parts are also directly connected to the base part. For this purpose, a hexagonal or octagonal shape is preferable for the packaging of rims. Despite this possibility of using a triple layer of material to gently support a rim, the risk of damage to the rim, e.g. if the shipping box falls, cannot be completely ruled out.

In contrast, the invention is based on the object of creating a packaging made of foldable material such as corrugated cardboard, paperboard or the like for packaging individual items, in particular rims, for which the upper and lower parts of the packaging can be mechanically erected using only an erection aid or a commercially available tray former and the packaging cuts are particularly easy to handle in terms of logistics and packaging material storage.

This task is solved in conjunction with the features of the packaging mentioned at the beginning in that the upper and lower parts are essentially identical in their geometric shape and size. Packaging designed in this way enables the cut-outs of the packaging parts to be mechanically erected using only one erecting aid or a commercially available tray former, thus simplifying packaging assembly. Furthermore, the identical design of the upper and lower parts and their cut-outs enables logistics to be easily managed and, in terms of storage space utilization, packaging material is stored for manufacturers and users. In particular, packaging designed in this way that can be assembled telescopically enables secure, all-round packaging of individual items of different heights, e.g. different rim widths.

Advantageously, the upper and lower parts can have a square base. In addition to making such packaging particularly easy to manufacture, the square base of the assembled parts is extremely beneficial in terms of material consumption, transport space utilization and stability.

In order to achieve particularly shock-resistant packaging for certain packaging cases, such as rims in particular, the packaging can include a stabilizing insert that can be inserted into the upper and lower parts.

The use of stabilizing inserts for the upper and lower sections results in particularly shock-absorbing packaging for individual items, especially for rims, which largely prevents damage to the packaged individual items by cushioning any possible shocks.

The stabilizing inserts can advantageously be made as punched blanks from corrugated cardboard, paperboard or similar and are essentially identical in size and geometric shape. This makes it possible to produce the stabilizing inserts particularly cost-effectively, and they can also be disposed of without any problems, in contrast to the previously common polystyrene protective inserts.

The base surfaces of the stabilizing inserts can preferably be square and have a U-shaped tab on each base side, which is connected to the base surface via a web hinged by fold lines. When the stabilizing insert is designed in this way, the tabs are folded by 90° into a position parallel to the erected side walls when inserted into an upper or lower part, whereby they fit snugly against them and form a self-adhesive connection to the respective upper or lower part due to the restoring forces inherent in them. When inserted, the webs are erected so that they form an angle of approx. 45° to the side walls or the base surface. The webs erected in this way represent cushioning elements which, in addition to locking the packaged individual goods, protect them from damage caused by impacts, e.g. by a package falling from a stack.

A hole can be punched out in the center of the base of a stabilizing insert. Such a hole is used to accommodate a hub, which is often provided as a decoration on rims. This provides additional locking of the rim and improves protection against damage.

The assembled packaging can advantageously be provided with a crosswise, tight banding. This prevents relative movement between the packaged individual goods, in particular a rim, and the outer packaging. Such relative movement can occur during transport by rail or truck due to vibration. The banding almost certainly prevents damage to the surface of the packaged individual goods. The tight banding is also important because outer packaging made of cardboard or corrugated cardboard is usually made from recycled material and sometimes contains abrasive substances. Without the tight banding, these would cause scratches on polished surfaces, e.g. on a rim.

The illustration of a packaging according to the invention shown in Fig. 1 clearly shows that the packaging 1 consists of a total of four blanks. Two of the blanks are designed to have the same dimensions and construction. This concerns the lower part, which is identical in size and geometric shape to the upper part 2.

This creates a packaging part with a square base and two opposite side walls of different heights in a ratio of 1:2 when the upper part 2 or lower part 3 is in the upright state. Two blanks formed in this way are rotated 90° relative to each other in the upright state and, when placed against each other, form a packaging 1 for a rim 8. The prerequisite for such a construction is an absolutely square basic cross-section of the base surfaces 10. The opposing side walls with different heights make it possible to telescopically extend both parts 2, 3, so that rims of different widths can also be safely packaged.

Both the upper part 2 and the lower part 3 are provided with a stabilizing insert 4 for stabilization and to prevent damage to the packaged goods, which is also designed to have the same construction and dimensions for both parts. A stabilizing insert 4 consists of a square cut-out corresponding to the internal dimensions of the upper or lower part 2, 3 made of sturdy double corrugated cardboard with four cut-outs in the form of tabs 6, which are arranged opposite one another in pairs and are raised 90° upwards when inserted into the upper or lower part 2, 3. The assembly and packaging of a rim 8 is carried out in such a way that a stabilizing insert 4 is inserted into each erected and glued upper part 2 and lower part 3. The tabs 6 of the stabilizing insert 4 are folded by 90° into a parallel position to the side flaps 10, 11, whereby they lie tightly against them and, due to the restoring forces inherent in them, form a quasi self-adhesive connection with the respective upper or lower part 2, 3. This also prevents the stabilizing insert from falling out when the two parts 2, 3 are placed on top of one another. The rim 8 is inserted into one of the parts assembled in this way. The other assembled part is rotated by 90° and placed in the opposite direction so that the two height-extended side flaps 5 cover the non-height-extended side flaps 11 of the other part. For rims with a small width, the two extended side flaps 5 completely cover the short side flaps 11 of the other part. Depending on the extent of the telescoping, the coverage of the side flaps is correspondingly smaller when the width of the rim to be packaged increases.

The overall advantages that can be achieved with the packaging according to the invention are that a material-saving, largely waste-free cut is made available, that the packaging can be carried out using commercially available packaging machines depending on the degree of automation, that a large number of the packaging size variants previously used for rims can be eliminated, thereby achieving cost advantages in the procurement of packaging materials and storage.

In addition, the packaging according to the invention represents an ideal transport and storage packaging and protects against theft or mix-ups thanks to an authenticity seal. The packaging with the stabilizing insert 4 also offers optimal protection for the packaged rim, even in the event of rough impacts and if it is dropped from a height of 80 cm.

As can be easily seen from Fig. 2, the packaging 1 designed according to the invention can package rims 8 of the same diameter but different widths, so that the variety of packaging sizes is reduced and thus expensive storage space is saved. It is also very clearly visible in this figure that the rim 8 is supported and centered by the webs 7.

The cut of the stabilizing insert 4 according to Fig. 3 shows the punched-out tabs 6, which are hinged via webs 7 on the side edges and offset inwards. When inserted into a folded and glued upper or lower part according to the cut according to Fig. 4, the tabs 6 rest on the side flaps 5, 11 of the respective part 2, 3. The web 7 is then raised by approx. 45°. In the middle of a stabilizing insert 4, an opening 13 is provided for receiving a hub that may be arranged on the rim 8 to be packaged.

Fig. 5 shows a completely finished packaging 1 for a rim 8. The packaging 1 is provided with a cross-banding 9. This cross-banding is designed to be "tight", which means that relative movement between the packaged rim 8 and the packaging is excluded, and thus a polished surface of the rim cannot be damaged by abrasion. As a result, the vibrations that occur during transport from the manufacturer to the retailer by truck or rail have no effect on the surface quality of the packaged rim 8.
