Orthosis as Achilles tendon splint

The innovation relates to an orthosis as an Achilles tendon splint, consisting of a support splint, which can be accommodated in the foot and lower leg area and is fixed to the foot via a bandage or a Velcro fastener.

The problem is that in the case of an Achilles tendon rupture, it was previously necessary to cast the foot several times in a plantar flexion position during the course of treatment, and in a plantar flexion position decreasing by 8 to 12° each time, in order to gradually stretch and thus load the Achilles tendon. Problems also arise with a corresponding orthosis,

by replacing the orthosis according to the desired conditions.

The aim of the innovation is to improve a generic orthosis and to create a simple adjustment in the extension and flexion directions in a grid-like manner and to ensure a rigid splint in any selected foot position.

This problem is solved in accordance with the innovation in that a pre-formed foot part with a foot plate and a heel surround is arranged to hold the foot in a tilt-resistant manner and has connecting elements as attachments guided into the area of the ankle, which are connected via an adjustable and lockable locking element to a clasp-like holder assigned to the lower leg via corresponding connecting elements as attachments.

A simple design consists in the locking element being formed by fan-shaped washers arranged on the base and holder, which can be pressed against each other in the set position via screw connections.

It is further proposed that the foot part and the holder for the lower leg are each formed in one piece from thermoplastic material.

In the arrangement shown, an orthosis is essentially formed from a preformed foot part 1 and a brace-like holder 2 assigned to the lower leg.

The foot part 1 has an integrated longitudinal arch 3 on a foot plate 4 and has a heel edge 5 that encloses the heel, so that the inserted foot is enclosed in a shell-like manner and can be secured by a Velcro fastener (not shown in detail). Connecting elements are arranged as medial and lateral attachments 6 and 7 to form a joint in the form of a locking element 8.

The holder 2 consists of a clasp that surrounds the lower leg and secures the lower leg using a Velcro fastener. In this case, downwardly extending connecting elements are arranged as projections 10 and 11 to form the locking element 8.

Each projection 6 and 7 of the foot part 1 and the associated projection 10 and 11 of the holder 2 is provided with fixed fan-shaped washers 12, which mesh with each other like gears and are pressed together via a screw connection 13. This enables a selected assignment of foot part 1 and holder 2, and forms a rigid, immovable rail that prevents any movement.

By loosening the screw connection 13, the pressure exerted on the fan washers 12 is removed and by rotating the arranged projections 6, 10 or 7, 11 with the fan washers 12 relative to each other, a different foot position is set, which can then be fixed again using the screw connection 13. In this way, any extension and flexion position can be set.
