Description

Process to improve the castability and deformability of light metal alloys It is known that both in casting, especially in continuous casting, as well occasionally considerable difficulties in hot working by rolling or forging arise from the fact that the otherwise perfectly deformable light metal alloys Suddenly and apparently inherent in a certain tendency to tear open Show temperature range. This can mean that either already during casting cracks occur within the cast ingot, which preclude their further use, or that initially perfectly cast bars at the beginning of kneading, so z. B. tear open at the first roll pass. Because of the caused Significant breakdowns in production have been very much after the cause of this Crack tendency sought without this could previously have been clearly stated.

The invention relates to a method which allows the described Eliminate the tendency to burst light metal alloys or their casting and To improve deformability. This method is based on the knowledge that a increased tendency to tear always occurs when the in the aluminum alloys The iron content present as an impurity is generally also present as an impurity existing silicon content significantly exceeds. One ensures that that the silicon content of the alloys is kept at least approximately the same as the iron content one can be sure that such alloys have no tendency to tear demonstrate.

In addition, it has been shown that alloys with the inventive Silicon content also has improved ductility in the cold state, in particular exhibit its better cold rollability.

Alloys are well known in which the .as an impurity contained silicon also in larger amount than the @ also as an impurity contained iron is present, since the contents of both impurities are one wanted to give some leeway. What was not known, however, was that disclosed in the invention Teaching to match the silicon content to the iron content, since the influence of the interaction between iron and silicon content. on the deformability or crack sensitivity of the alloys was previously not recognized. The method of the invention is particular then of importance if the alloys are produced with such scrap quantities, that they have considerable iron content. In order to do this even earlier, as undesirable To eliminate recognized iron content, it was previously necessary to proportionate the cast batches add large amounts of pure aluminum; but this resulted from both economic Reasons as well as with regard to the metal supply often lead to difficulties. The method according to the invention now gives a means in the hand, scrap entirely or to fuse almost entirely without the addition of new metals, by the addition of silicon the relatively high iron content, which would otherwise make processing of the material impossible would make, is rendered harmless.

For example, aluminum-copper-magnesium alloys with z. B. 3.20 / 0 copper, 1.50 / 0 magnesium, 0.70 / 0 manganese, 0.550 / 0 iron and 0.4% silicon do not process, because the largest number of blocks bursts during casting and almost the the rest of it breaks during hot rolling. The same alloy with a silicon content increased to about 0.55% could both be cast and rolled without any difficulty.
