Transformable furniture.

The invention extends to a convertible piece of furniture for optional use as a sofa and as a double bed. In the European patent application No. 0 027 661, published on April 29, 1981, a "piece of seating and sleeping furniture" has already been described, which consists of a seat cushion part that can be pulled out from the sitting position to the front, a first extension part that is sunk into a furniture frame under the seat cushion in the sitting position and is pivotally connected to it and can be folded up by turning by approx. 180° to the same level as the seat cushion part, and a second extension part formed by the backrest of the seat furniture that can also be folded forward by approx. 90° to the same level. This "piece of seating and sleeping furniture" had the great advantage over all other previously known proposals for such furniture that in the sleeping position the entire lying surface was at a normal, comfortable bed height above the floor.

The object of the invention is to significantly improve such a convertible piece of furniture both in terms of easier handling when changing the intended use as a sofa or double bed and in particular the stability of the piece of furniture in the double bed position. This object has been achieved according to the invention primarily by the design according to the characterizing part of claim 1. By designing the support arranged at the joint connection point between the seat cushion part and the first extension part as a part that automatically pivots into a vertical position and is secured in this position, it is ensured that the convertible piece of furniture has fully satisfactory stability even in the double bed position despite the use of support rollers for the extendable frame part that facilitate the conversion.

The convertible furniture shown in the drawing for use as a sofa or as a double bed has three cushions 1 to 3. Of these, part 1 serves as a seat cushion in the sofa position (Figure 1) and forms the foot part of the bed in the double bed position (Figure 3). The middle part 2 of the double bed surface is connected to part 1 at one end by a joint 4 and is connected to the sofa frame 10 by a joint fitting 5 attached to the underside close to the other end in such a way that, from a position sunk under the seat cushion part 1 in the sofa position (Figure 1), when converted into the double bed position by lifting it using a loop 1& - as shown in Figure 2 - it is pivoted by approximately 180° into its position according to Figure 3 until its cushion side is in the same plane with that of part 1 at normal bed height. During this pivoting process of part 2 according to Figure 2, it is brought into its double bed position according to Figure 3 by a further joint 5 with a frame part 8 _which can be extended forwards from the frame 10. At the same time, a support 7 pivotally attached to the connecting joint 4 between parts 1 and 2 of the cushion support is automatically pivoted into a vertical position and secured against tipping with the aid of an extension 7' projecting between the end surfaces of parts 1 and 2. By folding the cushion support part 3, which forms the backrest in the sofa position, forwards around a joint 3' from the position according to Figure 1 to the position according to Figure 3, this finally forms the head end of the double bed lying surface, whereby it is supported on both sides on the frame 10 by means of support parts 17, 17'. By giving the cushion part 3 a somewhat trapezoidal cross-sectional shape, a slightly rising shape of the lying surface head part can be achieved in the double bed position. An advantageous

A further development of the convertible furniture according to the invention consists of the arrangement of a rear wall H, shown in dashed lines in Figures 1 to 5 of the drawing, which can be attached to the frame 10. In the sofa position according to Figure 1, this is covered by the upholstered part 1 serving as a backrest and gives the convertible furniture the appearance of a so-called "French" bed in the double bed position. The rear wall II is also well suited for attaching reading lamps 12, 12* and/ ^or a radio alarm clock 15 or similar devices, as is indicated in Figure 4*. As is further shown in Figures 4 and 5, the "gesture IQ" can also be used to display elements IA-IA. Finally, it is within the scope of the invention to convert the convertible furniture into a horizontal position pivotable storage surface 14,14' and to cover the lateral openings created when the frame part 8 is extended from the frame 10, e.g. coverings 18,18' designed as pelmets are to be provided as optical improvements .

Transformable furniture for use as a sofa or as a double bed, consisting of a seat cushion part that can be extended forwards, a first extension part that is recessed in a furniture frame in the sofa position and is pivotally connected to the seat cushion part and can be folded up into the same plane as the seat cushion part after turning by approx. 180°, and a second extension part that is formed by the backrest of the sofa and can also be folded forwards by approx. 90° into the same plane, characterized in that at the joint connection point (4) between the seat cushion part (1) and the ^ s first extension part (2) is provided with a support (7,7') which can be automatically pivoted into a vertical position and held therein when the extension part (2) is pivoted up and turned. 2. Transformable furniture according to claim 1, characterized in that the extendable frame part (8) is provided with pairs of support rollers (9, 9') resting on the floor. 3. Transformable furniture according to claims 1 or 2, characterized in that the sofa frame (10) is provided with a rear wall (11) which remains standing when converted into the double bed form. 4. Transformable furniture according to claim 1 or the following, characterized in that the back cushion (3) serving as a second extension part for the lying surface has a trapezoidal cross-section. 5. Transformable furniture according to claim 1 or following, characterized in that armrest parts (13, 13') and/or storage _surfaces (14, 14') which can be brought into a horizontal position are arranged on the sofa frame (10). 6.
