Process for the electrolytic decomposition of alkali or alkaline earth metal compounds
In the electrolytic decomposition of aqueous solutions of alkali or alkaline earth metal compounds
using mercury as a cathode, the amalgam formed becomes continuous
or temporarily withdrawn from the electrolyzer cell and replaced by the same amount
Replaces low-alkali or alkaline-earth metal lower or free mercury. This takes place
in most cases, it doesn't matter whether the cells are horizontal or more
or less inclined or vertical support surface for the mercury,
the removal of the amalgam from the actual electrolysis room always in such a way that
the amalgam from the surface of the in the electrolysis room in front of the exit point
located sump is withdrawn. This is intended to contaminate such as degradation materials
the graphite anodes, which are otherwise on the surface of the sump or the liquid
Cathode would accumulate, be led out of the electrolyte beer room because
otherwise, for example in electrolysis with aqueous electrolytes, contamination
of the anode gas can enter with hydrogen. Also for electrolysis cells, at
where the cathode made of monocular silver is located on moving support surfaces, applies
the principle that the removal of the amalgam on the surface of the mercury
takes place in which the carrier surfaces move in order to be continuously separated from that by the current
deposited alkali or alkaline earth metal freed and again with fresh mercury
to be covered. According to a known method of this type, the discharge
of the amalgam from the
Surface of the mercury with the preferably
diametrically arranged supply of the alkali or alkaline earth metal poor or -free
Mercury also combined on the surface of the mercury. This will
although it achieves a particularly good cleaning effect, the process has the disadvantage
that in most cases a very undesirable crust formation on the walls of the
Mercury bath or on the support surface for the mercury nicket prevented
can be. This crust formation is caused by the one located above the mercury bath
Electrolytes caused when the support surfaces are immersed in the mercury bath
is carried away as droplets under the surface and there by conversion
the amalgam reacts to deposit solid matter, causing the operation of the cells
is made extremely difficult. In addition, over time, by detachment from.
Crusts occur as a further disadvantage, an increased evolution of hydrogen,
whereby the anode gas is contaminated and the desired and initially also achieved
Cleaning effect is canceled again.
It has now been found that one has a lasting good cleaning effect
can achieve without the disadvantages mentioned occur when the discharge
of the amalgam from the mercury bath on the side of the immersion of the support surfaces
into the mercury bath on the surface of the latter, the supply of the alkaline
or: mercury with less or no alkaline earth metals but below the surface
of the mercury bath. A special embodiment of the method provides
before, -that the supply of the alkali or alkaline earth metal poorer or -free mercury
is carried out at the deepest point of the mercury bath. This achieves
that the mercury, which is specifically heavier than that of the support surfaces of the
Cathode is stripped amalgam, the latter underlayer. That also occurs
one if, in another embodiment, the supply of the mercury is tight
below the discharge point of the amalgam on the same side of the cell.
In both cases it is possible for the amalgam to penetrate into the lower layers
of the mercury bath and thus largely to prevent crust formation. The procedure
is further explained by the drawing. Fig. i represents a known one
Device represents in which as a support surface for the mercury rotating disks
