Films and textile threads made from high-polymer halogenated hydrocarbons have recently had larger ones economic importance »because these products have a number of properties, which make them far superior to other available high polymer materials.
Allen diesen Gebilden aus Polyvinylverbindungen haftetAmong the structures made of high-polymer halogenated hydrocarbons, in particular those from Polyvinyl chloride, from the copolymers of vinyl chloride and from post-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride found practical use. All of these structures made of polyvinyl compounds adhere
There is probably polyvinyl chlorides, which begin to soften considerably over ioo ° s until temperatures, but such products are changed in the molecule so that they are for the production of films or filaments no longer suitable.
It has therefore been tried asymmetric Polydichlorethylen which has a through i8o 0> lying softening point to refer to the deformation. It has been shown, however, that these compounds are useful in all of the technical fields
Solvents are practically completely insoluble, and that deformation can therefore only be achieved by thermoplastic means, if necessary with the addition of plasticizers. In order to avoid these difficulties., Which stand in the way of processing pure polyethylene chloride, copolymers of dichloroethylene have been used with, vinyl and acrylic compounds. In order to obtain a sufficiently high softening point, however, copolymers must be used which contain at least 75% and more as. Dichloroethylene. But these copolymers, too, could only be dissolved in usable solvents boiling above 100 °, such as in aliphatic 1 S ethers, liquid ketones and in liquid aromatic chlorinated hydrocarbons, in some cases temperatures up to over 14.0 ' 0 are required. Working with such high-boiling solvents is, as the person skilled in the art knows, extremely difficult and processing of the solutions prepared with these solvents on conventional film casting or thread spinning equipment is not at all possible.
It has now been found that the processing of such copolymers of as.Dichloräthylen with more than 75% dichloroethylene and a softening point of over 120 0 is possible using the processing methods and equipment customary up to now, if one starts from copolymers which are concluded with are made of air.
The present invention relates to a process for the production of films and threads from copolymers of as. Dichloroethylene with at least 75% dichloroethylene and a softening point above I20 '° 1 , which is characterized in that' copolymers dissolved in tetrahydrofuran are used, which are used under complete exclusion of oxygen. In order to obtain a copolymer which is soluble in tetrahydrofuran, it is necessary to remove the last traces of absorbed oxygen from the monomers before the polymerization and also to keep oxygen absolutely away during the polymerization by means of appropriate measures known per se. Such copolymers with more than 75 0 ZO- as. Dichloroethylene are, for example up to 35 ° / o soluble in tetrahydrofuran, depending on the degree of polymerization. Such solutions can be shaped by the known processes for the production of films and threads without changing the apparatus, since tetrahydrofuran already boils at 68 Oi and is soluble in water in any ratio. The solution in tetrahydrofuran is prepared as usual with heating and stirring, and clear and homogeneous solutions are obtained within a short time if polymers produced with complete exclusion of oxygen and a tetrahydrofuran made largely anhydrous by treatment with caustic alkali is used. It is useful to keep away atmospheric oxygen during the preparation and processing of the solution, B. by • displacing the air in the work vessels with nitrogen or other oxygen-free gas can happen. These solutions can be processed by the generally customary methods of film and thread production. Spinning according to patent 743 597 has proven to be particularly expedient, because threads with a strength of more than 2.5 g per denier can be obtained in one operation.
A 20% tetrahydrofuran solution prepared under nitrogen a copolymer produced with the complete exclusion of oxygen, Consisting of 80 parts as. dichloroethylene and 20 parts vinyl chloride, is poured on a belt caster conventional design potted to films. An almost clear, tough film is obtained which is due to its complete insensitivity to water, it is very good as a packaging or insulating material suitable. By stretching during or after the manufacturing process, it is possible to keep the film to give additional strength and suppleness.
A 25% tetrahydrofuran solution of a copolymer prepared under nitrogen, consisting of 83 parts of dichloroethylene, 15 parts of vinyl chloride and 2 parts of acrylonitrile, which was prepared with complete exclusion of oxygen, is spun into a drying shaft heated to 70 0 , and the through Filaments resulting from evaporation of the solvent are collected on a winder.
The freshly coagulated threads can either immediately or after complete drying solidified by a stretching process and improved in their other mechanical behavior. The tensile strength of threads produced in this way is a g / denier and above.
A 30% tetrahydrofuran solution of a copolymer consisting of 92.5 parts of dichloroethylene and 7.5 parts of ethyl acrylate, which, as indicated in Examples 1 and 2, was prepared with the exclusion of oxygen, is made according to that described in Patent 743,597 Spinning process spun in water as a precipitation bath and the coagulated thread is then immediately stretched by 300 percent and more. The result is a yarn with a tensile strength above 2.5 g / denier, the only above 1 'softened and 13ο 01, therefore, a considerably larger field of application than the previous has Polyvinylchloridfäden.
