MAT, ESPECIALLY A FLOOR MAT FOR MOTOR VEHICLES, MADE OF TEXTILE FABRIC

The invention relates to a mat, in particular a floor mat for motor vehicles, made of textile fabric _which is backed by a moisture-proof plastic layer, from the underside of which, facing away from the textile fabric, thorn-like projections protrude, which are distributed over surface areas.

In many vehicles, the floor mats are placed on velour and it is desirable to fix these floor mats to the velour so that they do not slip. The projections provided on a well-known mat of this type are used for this purpose.

This well-known mat consists of a textile fabric that is needled onto a supporting mesh fabric. This textile fabric is backed by a plastic layer that has elongated, circular-cylinder-like projections that are rounded off like hemispherical shapes at their free ends. The projections are the same thickness along their entire length and the diameter is less than 1/5 of the total length.

Such a mat penetrates the fluffy velour on which it is placed with its projections and is thus secured against slipping. However, the long projections must be able to penetrate deep enough into the velour, otherwise the mat will not lie flat on the velour as is desirable for use. This can even result in entire areas of projections being bent over and then causing the mat to bounce upwards again and again. This mat is not suitable for thin or less fluffy velours. The long, thin projections also require special effort in terms of material and tools during production.

The object of the invention is to design a mat of the type mentioned at the beginning in such a way that it can be produced more easily and with less material expenditure and that it provides a solid, non-slip base, even when the base is made of less fluffy fabrics.

The invention is characterized in that the projections are conical in shape and taper to a point towards the free end.

The cone-shaped projections can penetrate the underlying velour fabric more easily and are also more stable, so they do not tend to bend as easily as the projections according to the state of the art. The cone-shaped projections have a wider base area in relation to their height, so they have a better grip on the plastic layer, which can therefore be made weaker than with the state of the art. This means that plastic material for the projections can be saved.

The cone-like projections can be made very compact and are then very stable and require little plastic material for the plastic layer. Manufacturing is also very simple, as will be explained in more detail below.

Advantageously, the largest diameter of a projection is 1 to 3 mm, preferably 1.8 to 2.2 mm. Advantageously, the length of a projection is 1 to 3 times the largest diameter, preferably 1.5 to 2.5 times the largest diameter.

The mat is suitable as a floor mat in motor vehicles, but it is also suitable for other purposes where it is important to have a non-slip mat on a textile

For example, the mat can be a rug that is to be placed as a bridge on a carpeted floor.

In general, a single layer of plastic is sufficient. It is also possible, particularly if the textile fabric is prefabricated elsewhere, to back the textile fabric with a first layer of plastic that only serves to ensure durability and then apply a second layer of plastic that is bonded to the first layer of plastic and carries the projections. Preferably, however, only a single layer of plastic is used.

The textile fabric is preferably a needled felt, because this is the easiest to produce, with its back loops embedded in the plastic layer. This needled felt can be needled onto a mesh fabric. However, the mesh fabric is not necessary in many cases because the plastic layer can provide sufficient support, so that the textile fabric preferably consists only of needled felt fibers. Synthetic fiber fabrics are preferred.

It is recommended to hem a mat around its entire circumference. A corresponding design is characterized by the fact that a hem made of textile material is sewn over the edge, which covers the outer edge area of the textile fabric and the plastic layer, and that the area of the plastic layer covered by the hem is free of conical, pointed projections.

The areas covered by the hemmer can be left out from the start when attaching the projections. However, this may be too complicated for mass production because, especially with mats for motor vehicles,

Many different shapes can be considered, which can be conveniently cut out of prefabricated material sold by the meter. If there are any projections in the area covered by the hemmer, these can either be cut off or, better still, pressed ^down by hot forming so that they no longer interfere with the hemmer.

A mat according to the invention can be produced very easily in such a way that the finished needled textile fabric is first coated on the back with flowable plastic, which is then at least partially hardened to form a plastic layer, that the projections are then placed on the plastic layer with flowable plastic by placing a measured plastic portion on each projection, which is then, while the plastic is still flowable, pulled out to a cone-like point, and that the plastic is then hardened.

In this case, the plastic layer is preferably rolled onto the textile fabric and the plastic portions for the projections are preferably fed from holes in the roller circumference assigned to the individual projections to an application roller of the plastic layer and pulled out through the roller circumference section which lifts off again during the rotational movement of the roller.

In the drawing, 1 designates a mat that consists of a textile fabric 2 that extends over the mat with the same thickness and is backed by a plastic layer 3. The textile fabric 2 consists only of needled felt fibers, so it has no mesh fabric for reinforcement. The fibers are preferably plastic fibers, but natural fibers or mixed fabrics made of plastic and natural fibers can also be used.

The loops on the back of the textile fabric are partly embedded in the plastic of the plastic layer 3, as can be seen particularly well in Figure 3.

Projections 6, 7 ... are arranged over surface areas, for example surface area 5, of the plastic layer 3, which protrude from the underside or rear side 8 of the plastic layer 3 facing the viewer in Figure 1. Instead of only covering individual surface areas 5, 9, 10 with projections, the entire surface of the plastic layer 3 can also be covered with projections, if necessary, leaving out the edge areas.

The projections 6, 7 ... are all of the same shape, namely conical and tapering to a point at the free end. Such a projection, such as the projection 12 in Figure 3, has a circular base, the diameter ¹ of which is 2 mm according to the double arrow 13. The height according to

Double arrow 14 is 2.2 mm. The shape can deviate from the ideal geometric shape of a circular cone due to deformations, constrictions or bulges. The rough basic shape of the projection is that of a circular cone.

Preferably, the projections are evenly distributed over the relevant surface areas, but they can also be unevenly distributed. According to Figures 1 to 4, the projections are arranged in an orthogonal grid. The column spacing according to double arrow 15 is 10 mm and the column spacing according to double arrow 16 is also 10 mm. The spacings according to double arrows 15 and 16 are significantly larger than the dimensions according to double arrows 13 and 14.

The plastic of the plastic layer 3 is expediently the same plastic from which the projections are made.

The mat 1 is hemmed around its entire circumference with a fabric strip 20 which covers the outer edge area 21 of the textile fabric 2 and the edge area 22 of the plastic layer 3. The mat 1 is punched out of meter-length material in the form shown in Figure 1 and the surface area 23 has been cut so that some projections are in the edge area 22. The fabric strip 20 can be sewn around these projections and the projections can be pressed down a little. However, it is better to cut off these projections or, even easier, to press them down while slightly heating them so that only a small, non-disruptive hump 24 remains on the original projection. The same applies to the hump 25.

In Figure 2, for the sake of clarity, the fabric strip serving as the hem is drawn quite loosely _4. In fact, it is sewn tightly to the edge area/ so that the edge areas of the textile fabric 2
