Cellulose-phenol and cellulose-lignin-phenol-formaldehyde condensates
It has been found that cellulose or starch (filter paper, cotton wool, potato starch)
or cellulose in association with lignin (wood flour, wood pulp, shredded straw)
by acid catalysis and elevated temperatures with phenol or phenol and cresol
are digestible to cellulose oxyphenyl compounds. With aldehydes, preferably
Formaldehyde, subject to moderate condensation in a basic or acidic medium,
it creates liquid dark red resins, which are easily converted into alcohol, esters and ethers
are soluble. Applied in thin layers on metal, this forms
lower formaldehyde condensates during curing ocher yellow to light brown, high-gloss,
transparent films, which differ from the filmecu from the pure formaldehyde resins
through higher elasticity and above all through greater resistance to swelling in water
and are more resistant to acids and alkalis.
Mixed with fillers, the cellulose oxyphenyl and especially
the cellulose-L.ignin-oxyph. enyl-formaldehyde condensates without difficulty as
Resins are used for fast-curing molding compounds, which are made after the thermal compression process
in, the press harden into very impact-resistant compacts.
The high one is striking. Curing rate of the cellulose-oxyphenyl-formaldehyde condensates
during cold hardening! when these are used as alcoholic solutions, e.g. B. with phosphoric acids
or toluenesulfonic acid -catalyzed, can be applied to wood or metal ..

a total of 15 ccm of water of reaction could be discharged through the cooler, which corresponds to a substitution of 50% of the gellulose hydroxyls. With brisk stirring, 70 g of linseed oil fatty acid can then slowly flow in and the temperature increases further to 150 ° to 55 °.

After 25% the wood flour has completely dissolved in phenol, before the temperature is increased to 145 ° for 35%. The development of water droplets ceases after this time, and 31 ceni of water condensed in the descending cooler, which indicates a substitution of all cellulose hydroxyls. It can be assumed that condensation also takes place between the genuine lignin of the wood flour and phenol, in that a phenolic OH group of lignin is probably etherified with phenol. Attempts at solving the problem with (learning the lignin of wood and phenol also result in an increase in weight of about 10 o / o of the lignin component, which indicates a bond of i XI (-> 1 phenol to 11o1 lignin (molecular weight 800 to 100).
