Description
Process for obtaining cerium (IV) nitrate It is known that cerium (IV) nitrate can be extracted from nitric acid solution with ether, whereby from the contradicting Literature data shows that a nitric acid concentration of the water layer of at least 6.18 n is necessary for this process.
In contrast, it has now been found that even at a lower nitric acid concentration the water layer about 3 to 6 n-cerium can be extracted very well with ether, which must be counted as an important advance, because both the nitric acid losses as well as the risk of explosion when working with a lower H N 03 concentration can be reduced considerably. In addition, concentrations of less than 6 n achieve a very effective separation of thorium from cerium, while in more acidic solutions the thorium largely accompanies the cerium during the extraction. In this process neither the trivalent rare earths, nor iron, aluminum, Alkaline earths, alkalis and other impurities of the cerium extracted with ether so there is an excellent possibility of separating the cerium from its natural companions, which very quickly become extremely pure cerium preparations allowed to manufacture.
It was also found that other organic solvents, such as higher ethers, ketones, nitro compounds, etc., can be used to extract the cerium can, although the extracted quantities are usually somewhat lower than when using of diethyl ether lie.
Finally it was observed that the presence of certain people other nitrates such as B. lithium, magnesium or ammonium nitrate, the distribution of the cerium can be influenced in favor of the organic phase. However, it is too note that in some cases the separation of cerium from thorium suffers, z. B. the presence of Mg or Li nitrate in high concentration, the thorium pressed together with the cerium into the organic solvent. On the other hand takes place at Presence of ammonium nitrate, no significant carryover of thorium.
There is largely freedom in the choice of cerium concentration. as Temperatures are practically room temperature and lower in question, since at substantially higher temperatures decomposition of the solvent is to be feared. Examples' The percentages in the following examples mean that the proportion in question P is the applied amount of cerium extracted when the volumes of both layers are the same after shaking. In Examples i to 7, the cerium concentration was of the starting solution 0.1 mol per liter.
i. A 4.5 N nitric acid Ce (IV) solution was made with the same volume Diethyl ether shaken. P = 94 ° / 0; 2. a 6, o n-nitric acid cerium (IV) solution was shaken with the same volume of diethyl ether. P = 96%; 3. an 8, o n-nitric acid Ce (IV) solution was shaken with the same volume of di-i-propyl ether. P = 80.5 ° / 0; 4. An 8, o n-nitric acid cerium (IV) solution was made with the same volume Shaken methyl-n-propyl ketone. P = 850/0; 5. an 8, o n-nitric acid Ce (IV) solution was shaken with the same volume of nitromethane. P = 57.5%; 6. a Ce (IV) solution, which was i, o n-nitric acid and saturated with lithium nitrate, was made with the same Volume of diethyl ether shaken. P = 24%. With the same acid concentration and In the absence of lithium nitrate, only 0.5% of the cerium went into the ether; 7. a Ce (IV) solution, which was 3, o n-nitric acid and saturated in ammonium nitrate, was made with the same Volume of diethyl ether shaken. P = 84 ° / 0. With the same acid concentration and In the absence of ammonium nitrate, only about 40% of the cerium was extracted. B. a raw one Cerite earth mixture with about 50% Ce02 was dissolved in HNO3 and the cerium electrolytically oxidized. Then the HN03 concentration was adjusted to 6 n, the solution with shaken the same volume of diethyl ether and the ether layer with the same Volume 3.6 N nitric acid shaken back once. The ether became with 90% yield (based on the tetravalent cerium originally present) a light yellow Ce02 obtained which contained less than 0.05% Pr, O11.
