Vorrichtung zur Lagerung schwach- und mittelradioaktiver Abfälle Device for the storage of low and medium level radioactive waste
The invention relates to a container for storing radioactively contaminated objects or radioactive ones Solids with low to medium activity, especially for temporary storage.
Solid radioactive waste is currently being stored by concreting, bituminizing, as well as by embedding conditioned in a compact plastic matrix.
The storage containers that can be produced on the basis of the techniques mentioned are in principle more radioactive for final storage Suitable for waste.
In addition, radioactive solids are temporarily stored without conditioning.
An important prerequisite for interim storage low and medium level radioactive waste is,

daß diese zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt unter Berücksichtigung noch zu erarbeitender Endlagervorschriften in einem dann endgültigen Vorschriften entsprechenden Kondition!erungszustand überführt werden können.that this will be done at a later point in time, taking into account repository regulations that have yet to be developed can then be transferred in a condition corresponding to the final regulations.
Loose filled in a container waste, which may be compacted, have the disadvantage that it during transport to damage the storage container from moving waste parts, e.g. B. by contaminated Metal parts can come.
Temporary embedding in compact media, such as B. concrete, bitumen or plastic, as a later deflasking is practically hardly feasible. In addition, there are also additional considerable difficulties in embedding specifically light waste in the not yet solidified specifically heavy matrix. Due to the difference in density, the radioactive objects may preferentially to the Surface of the matrix are raised.
Der Erfindung lag daher die Aufgabe zugrunde, einen Behälter zum Lagern radioaktiv kontaminierter Gegenstände bzw. schwach radioaktiver Feststoffe - insbesondere zur vorübergehenden Aufbewahrung - zu schaffen, der die genannten Nachteile wie die spätere Überführbarkeit derThe invention was therefore based on the object of providing a container for storing radioactively contaminated objects or weakly radioactive solids - especially for temporary storage - to create the named Disadvantages such as the later transferability of the

radioaktiven Abfälle unter neuen Vorschriften in ein endlagerfähiges Gebinde, die Beschädigungsgefahr für den Behälter durch sich bewegende Teile, sowie Entmischung von Matrix und spezifisch leichterem radioaktivem Abfall während der Konditionierung vermeidet, ferner den technischen Aufwand für die Erstkonditionierung, die teilweise nicht endgültig ist, gering behält.radioactive waste under new regulations in a container suitable for final disposal, the risk of damage to the Containers caused by moving parts, as well as segregation of matrix and specifically lighter radioactive waste during the conditioning avoids, furthermore, the technical effort for the initial conditioning, which is partly is not final, retains little.
The object was achieved according to the invention in that the container, the radioactive objects or substances (1) contains embedded in a matrix (2) made of foamed solidified plastic.
The present invention is explained in more detail by way of example with the aid of the schematic illustration.
The radioactive waste (1), e.g. B. contaminated laboratory equipment, lead shielding for radioactive preparations, wooden parts, Tools etc. are placed in a container (5), e.g. B. a 200 l-barrel, given. In the spaces between the Radioactive objects or substances are given a substance which, through the development of gas, forms a plastic foam forms and solidifies. This plastic foam forms a matrix (2) through which the radioactive substances (1) are fixed in the waste container (5).

The foam-forming substance can be a blowing agent-containing plastic granulate, which under the action of Heat expands. The release of propellants can also be caused by chemical reactions of substances which are created by mixing several components. Foaming with is particularly advantageous Polyurethane. For this purpose, the liquid components of a foam-forming polyurethane system are placed in a container mixed intensively and poured into the barrel before the end of the drip time. It is immaterial whether the radioactive objects are wetted when pouring the liquid component mixture or whether the mixture flows on the inside wall of the container to the bottom of the container. With this procedure it is beneficial to do it one at a time pour several small approaches into the barrel and the expansion and hardening of the foam wait to avoid overdosing the components and thus foaming over the container. To the curing of the foam, which generally occurs after a few minutes, is the radioactive waste fixed in the waste bin. No special technical effort is required.
Nach einer Zwischen-The substances embedded in the containers in this way can be easily transported, with the low Weight of the matrix is beneficial. After an interim

During the storage phase, the waste packages can be compacted on a case-by-case basis will. The radioactive materials or devices can be conveniently removed from the matrix, e.g. B. with knives, cut out, be torn out or detached and, on the basis of appropriate regulations, in a repository suitable State to be transferred.
Since the radioactive objects usually have a higher specific weight than the foam, they will not raised to the surface of the matrix.
It is particularly advantageous if the pores of the matrix are closed. As a result, the matrix not only acts as a fixative, but also as a moisture protection. The closed-cell matrix is ensured by carefully metering the propellant. In the case of polyurethane foams, the rate of the so-called rise reaction 11 , which supplies the gas, must be precisely matched to the crosslinking reaction forming the macromolecule. An excess of diisocyanate should be avoided.
It is also of particular advantage if the matrix is flame-retardant. This is achieved in that Phosphorus or halogen-containing flame retardants are added to the matrix.

In the case of PU foam, flammability is made more difficult if tri- and dimerized isocyanates are used will.
To protect against the escape of radioactive substances, it is often advantageous to add the radioactive substances to be provided with one or more barriers (3), it being particularly advantageous for handling reasons if the barriers (3) consist of interchangeable inserts. Plastic, in particular, has proven to be the material for the barriers Plastic bags or plastic containers have proven advantageous.
To reduce the radiation emission from the waste container (5), it is often advantageous to have it with a Shield (4), e.g. B. made of concrete.
