Description

Process for improving the tear-resistant bond between rubber and light metals It is known the tear-resistant connection between rubber or rubber-like materials, and surfaces made of metal, glass or porcelain with chlorinated rubber or to produce its substitutes. Here it is possible to use the materials mentioned to unite so tightly, d, ate rather a tearing of the one with that at the ultimate test Metal bonded mass as a detachment from the. rigid surface takes place. In the course of However, further investigations have shown that in this process for light metals, especially magnesium, and alloys containing them, give favorable results cannot be reached without further ado.

It is also known to apply hard rubber to aluminum in such a way that that an etching treatment with hydrochloric acid or hydrogen halides is carried out beforehand.

Finally, it is also known to spray the metallic substrate with a covering made of: iron; to provide, because the rubber will firmly bond target.

Die Zerreißprüfung ergab folgende N%Terte: Legierung A , Haftwerte Legierung B I Haftwerte Unbehandelt . . . . . . . . . . . . . o bis 5 kg 'cm2 Unbehandelt . . . . . . . . . . . . . It has now been found that the tear-resistant connection between rubber, synthetic Icattchuk or karutschuk-like: substances on the one hand and surfaces made of light metals, in particular magnesium, and their alloys on the other hand by means of halogenated rubber, synthetic rubber or similar halogenated synthetic polymerisation products can be improved by improving the surface the light metal is subjected to an etching treatment with acidic agents that have an oxidizing effect on the light metal surface before application of the binder. A mixture of chromic acid or its salts and nitric acid has proven to be particularly suitable for this pretreatment. One embodiment of the new method consists, for example, in that workpieces made of alloys which, in addition to essentially aluminum, contain about 90% magnesium (A) and about i 5% magnesium (B) are pretreated with a mixture of chromate and nitric acid and then vulcanized together with an artificial rubber mixture which essentially contains a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile, vulcanized to earth in the usual way using Chlo @ r'kawtschuk as the adhesive. The tensile test gave the following N% values: Alloy A, bond strengths alloy BI bond strengths Untreated. . . . . . . . . . . . . o up to 5 kg 'cm2 untreated. . . . . . . . . . . . . . o to io kg'cm = With sodium dichromate- With sodium dichromate- Nitric acid pretreated 80 to 100 kg, -cm 'nitric acid pretreated 7o to 90 kg cm = The bichromate nitric acid solution with which this extraordinary adhesive strength dough is achieved has the following composition: 13 parts sodium dichromate, 22 parts concentrated nitric acid and 65 parts distilled water.

The degreased test specimens (A and B) were at room temperature 15 Immersed in the solution for up to 60 seconds, then carefully rinsed in boiling water and dried immediately. That, painting with chlorinated rubber solutions and vulcanizing of synthetic rubber mixtures was done in the usual way.

Quite good results were also obtained with pickling solutions with a similar composition, such as B. a mixture of chromic acid or its salts, with other strong mineral acids, such as sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid, but also with dilute nitric acid scored alone.
