Eine Möglichkeit zur Änderung des Gesichtsausdruckes bestand bisher in der Verwendung eines einfachen Hebels zum Anheben und Senken der Unterlippe. Obgleich jedoch dadurch ein Aussehen bewirkt wird, das an ein Lächeln oder Schmollen erinnert, führt dieses Aussehen oftmals zu einem weitgehend künstlichen oder gekünstelten Gesichtsausdruck. Natürlich weist das Gesicht des Menschen in Wirklichkeit zahlreiche Muskeln auf, die komplexerweise zusammenarbeiten, um Gesichtsausdrücke zu erzeugen.
