Federbetten, die aus einer einzigen federngefüllten , aus Oberdeck- und Unterdeckplatte zusammengesetzten Stoffhülle bestehen, haben den Nachteil, daß ihr Inhalt beim Gebrauch nicht gleichmäßig verteilt bleibt und sich in unterschiedliche Schichtstärken auflöst. Man hat daher zu dem Hilfsmittel gegriffen, die Federbettfläche durch Kreuz- und Quercähte in sog. "Steppdecken" zu verwandeln, bei denen in den entstehenden rechteckigen Teilräumen gleiche Federmengen fest eingeschlossen sind.
