Processes for the preparation of polycyclic ketones with an angular methyl group "diene synthesis" Diene syntheses in which a monounsaturated 5-ring ketone is reacted as a carbonyl component with a diene have not yet become known. Experiments have been described in which have reacted. Regarding the diene syntheses of the last-mentioned type, it should be noted that the cyclopentadienone derivatives mentioned as starting materials are not even known as such, because they continue to change in the manner described at the moment of their formation, and that here one and the same substance necessarily plays the role of the diene component such as the carbonyl component takes over.
(Z i n c ke, Meyer, Annalen der Chemie 367 [igog], S. i, oder dessen Methylabkömmlinge,
There are no indications of any bonds such as tetrachlorocyclopentadienone (Zinc ke, Meyer, Annalen der Chemie 367 [igog], p. I, or its methyl derivatives, Annalen der Chemie [18g7], p. 139, 180 and 198), according to dein Reaction scheme suggests that the compound (II), although it is an α, ß-unsaturated ketone of a cyclic structure, can in turn condense with a further molecule of the starting material in the manner of the diene synthesis. One could draw the conclusion from this that carbon, carbon double bond in the molecule of tetrachlorocyclopentadienone must be activated by the carbonyl group as well as by the neighboring vinyl group so that this unsaturated 5-ring ketone can react as a carbonyl component in a diene synthesis.
If thus the mentioned connections. do not allow any prediction whether a simple x, ß-unsaturated 5-ring ketone can be used as a carbonyl component in diene syntheses. will be, this probability appears to be further reduced by the fact that the tendency of the 2, ß-unsaturated ring ketones to resinify through self-condensation is not only greater than that of the corresponding saturated ring ketones, but also occurs as a further unfavorable circumstance that in the series of the α, ß-unsaturated ring ketones the ability to self-condense from the cycloheptenone via the cyclohexenone to the cyclopentenone increases significantly. (Kötz, Annalen der Chemie 400 [19i3], p. 74.) In contrast to these general regularities, it was found that the introduction of a methyl group into the unsaturated a-position in cyclopentene- (i) -non- (5) has its properties largely changed: the i-methylcyclopentene- (i) -non- (5) is so stable that it can be heated to around 200 ° for 24 hours or more without any significant change. The substance does not show the ease with which those carbonyl compounds mentioned in the patent attach to dienes, as emphasized in German patent specification 526 168, but rather, in order to carry out such a synthesis, it is necessary to add the methylcyclopentenone, which at the same time, is in excess , can serve as a solvent to heat the diene to a higher temperature for several hours. So by using Methylcyclopentenpn it is possible. Further quantities of the adduct can be obtained from the forerun on renewed heating in the pressure vessel. polycyclic ketones with angular methyl group, which are of practical interest.
