The fax machine designed to be connected to a telephone network (10) comprises means (1) for transmitting and receiving faxes, means for adjusting (2) the value of one transmission and reception parameter for adapting it to the network and corresponding fax machines, means (3) for monitoring the telephone connection in order to control the adjusting means (2), the adjusting means (2) comprising a memory (25) for storing at least a series of past and adapted values of said parameter, constituting a range of values, means (26) for reading the memory (25) and extracting therefrom a value of the range to be applied in the adjusting means output (2).
