Description
Process for the production of aluminum The extraction of aluminum So far, without exception, has been done electrolytically, using pure aluminum oxide in a snake, consisting of cryolite and sodium chloride, dissolved and that so obtained bath is subjected to electrolysis; this is what separates Aluminum from the cathode in liquid form. Suggestions, aluminum by reduction to produce aluminum oxide using coal or hydrocarbons at high temperatures, could not be realized so far, although this tow would theoretically be preferable will. - The first of these. Attempts failed because the aluminum Carbon oxide, which is formed during the reduction, reduces itself again and that Alummniunncarbid forms at the same time. To the Rückoxidatifln by a Preventing the reduction process of formed aluminum has been proposed by to drive acetylene through the reaction space. But since acetylene decomposes in the process must, @so is formed from the resulting aluminum and from the carbon, the from which acetylene is released in the form of soot, aluminum oxide. An other suggestion went to keep the reaction space under vacuum by means of a suction device and the gaseous reactants including the aluminum formed in vapor form continuously pulling off and running my room where cooling takes place and the aluminum vapor no longer reacts with the gaseous reactants can take place. But since there is aluminum and carbon oxide, that is the result of the reduction of aluminum oxide arises, has approximately the same weight, so move; both substances move with the same Speed so that the suction does not bring about the desired success can.
According to the present invention: now the reduction of aluminum oxide by means of coal in a reaction chamber through which an inert gas, e.g. B. hydrogen, is passed through,. carried out in such a way -that a loose mixture of aluminum oxide and heating coal to a temperature at which the aluminum is in vapor form free is, and the inert gas passed through the reaction chamber, the aluminum vapor including the reaction gases away from the reaction space, and that the aluminum vapor containing gases ün-. indirectly after leaving the reaction chamber so far: cooled down be that the main part of the aluminum by cooling and d, e2 rest on the further Way the gases are knocked down by mechanical means. Instead of bald you can also certain hydrocarbons, optionally in a mixture, as reducing agents be used.
To make this process possible, it is advisable to use the reaction cream to train channel-shaped and immediately above this. R, ealztionsxaunies - a-Kühlvo @ rriclitun: -about one extending over the entire length of the V reaction space from the inside Cooled drum, to be arranged_, on the surrounding surface of which is from the reaction mixture can precipitate rising aluminum vapor. From a suitable point of the The aluminum becomes around this drum, as it is deposited in the form of a snow took it off and pushed it out of the oven.
The reaction chamber can be heated in any way, ideally through electrical energy.
As already mentioned, the preferred protective gas is hydrogen used. At the high temperature of the furnace, hydrogen is formed as a result of the action on the charcoal which has been added to the alumina, considerable amounts of acetylene. This formation of acetylene takes place at the expense of the added Heating energy, since the conversion is endothermic. But this is not a loss of energy, because acetylene is known to have a strong reducing effect and the help of the Acetylene in the reduction of the aluminum oxide a recovery of the expended Energy means. If acetylene is used up in the implementation, this is disruptive Temperature equilibrium between hydrogen, carbon and acetylene, and that it forms Acetylene is immediately recovered in that the resulting from the cleavage of acetylene Hydrogen again forms acetylene with the coal. Also because the acetylene as a gas reaches the aluminum oxide particles more easily than solid carbon, the implementation is accelerated.
The reduction of aluminum oxide can also be achieved by acetylene itself, that is if necessary without coal, carried out, laugh must @ so, a lot of hydrogen be added: as corresponds to the temperature equilibrium, so that the aoetylene cannot decompose. The amount of shielding gas used to carry this aluminum vapor and for the dilution of the reaction gases there is no need to be large. As a result of the small molecular weight of hydrogen is the average speed the particles of hydrogen are considerably larger than those of carbon monoxide and aluminum vapor. Hydrogen fills the space more than carbon dioxide, and it is enough about twice the amount of hydrogen, based on carbon oxide, in the aluminum particles to protect.
The drawing shows an embodiment of a device for Implementation of the method according to the invention. Fig. I represents a perpendicular Section and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
The furnace i is hermetically sealed by a metal shell a. -By the attachment 3, the charge is introduced in powder form and through the pipe socket 5 let the protective gas flow in. The reaction mixture falls through channel 6 down and comes into the elongated, trough-shaped: n reaction chamber 7, which is with refractory material is lined and its wall by cooling tubes against too great heating is protected. The electric current is through feed lines 9 the electrodes i o are fed to the two ends of the trough-shaped reaction chamber 7 are arranged. The insert located in the reaction hammer is due to his electrical resistance is highly heated.
A rotating drum i i is arranged above the reaction chamber, which is cooled from the inside in some way. The ones from your reaction room The ascending protective and reaction gases as well as the aluminum vapor carried along cool them on the drum i i so far away that the carbon oxide is no longer the aluminum can oxidize. The aluminum itself settles on this cooling drum in the form of a Aluminum cluvee; s off and was removed from this by a scraper 12 through a funnel-like channel 13 is fed to a screw 14 and from this into the Collection space 15 promoted. The funnel-like channel 13 runs into a cylindrical one Part of which is filled by a revolving screw 14. In the taste Aluminum carried along by flowing gases settles and is also, conveyed in a collecting space 15. This collecting space 15 is expediently likewise cooled to keep the aluminum powder stored therein at a low temperature keep. I. In the upper part of this collecting space, a filter 16 is arranged to remove through the nozzle 17 withdrawing gases aluminum particles, which have not yet been deposited.
The evacuating gases consist of hydrogen and carbon oxide and can be freed from the carbon dioxide in a known manner, so that the hydrogen then can be fed back into the furnace as protective gas.
From the collecting container 1 5 can. the aluminum powder can be removed from time to time. It can itself be used in powder form for many purposes, such as: B. in pyrotechnics or for the preparation of paints and the like.
When using electrical resistance heating, one needs with glue according to the invention hardly half of the electrical energy, such as they practiced electrolytic processes for the production of aluminum at dembshex :is required. The method according to the invention is also simpler than the electrolytic one, because now you can also use alternating current and it is well known the regulation of alternating current is simpler than that of direct current on which one is dependent on electrolysis. The set-up costs are also with alternating current considerably less than with direct current.
If you use enough pure coal or acetylene in the presence of Hydrogen for reduction, so you get very pure aluminum, because this after the reduction is volatilized. When using pure clay the yield is at. Aluminum almost in terms of quantity. But you can also use less pure clay, if their admixtures do not evaporate at 180 ° C.
It should also be noted that for the production of magnesium by reduction A process has already been proposed in the case of magnesia with charcoal which the reduction is carried out in an inert or reducing gas atmosphere and the magnesium vapors formed are removed from the reaction space by the gas stream and my special compression space, to be caught and condensed. Despite the external similarity of this procedure to the procedure just described .according to the present invention, an essential difference is that Magnesium behaves quite differently to carbon than aluminum. Uag. Magnesium forms namely, practically speaking, no carbide at all, whereas in the case of the reduction of Aluminum oxide with coal or hydrocarbons is precisely the fact that it is there aluminum carbide is easily formed, the main reason being that it is so far it has not been possible to: eil practically usable process for the production of to obtain pure aluminum by reducing aluminum oxide.
