Description
The present invention relates to hard surface cleaning compositions. The compositions of the present invention are designed for optimum performance in the removal of limestone and are thickened without the use of a thickening compound.
Compositions for cleaning hard surfaces, including compositions for removing limestone, are well known in the art. Such compositions, which are mainly characterized by strong acidity, are described, for example, in EP 496188.
Limestone is found primarily in such locations as drain pans, toilet bowls and bathtubs, i.e. vertical surfaces. Therefore, it is desirable to impart some viscosity to limestone removal compositions to prevent the compositions from running down vertical surfaces. In fact, thick compositions adhere to vertical surfaces, allowing them more time to act on vertical surfaces before running down those surfaces. However, it is undesirable to use thickening compounds in such compositions for several reasons. For example, thickening compounds can significantly increase formulation costs. Also, thickeners can cause problems with processing and product stability, especially in extremely acidic conditions. Furthermore, thickeners can affect the limestone removal performance of the composition. Finally, thickeners do not contribute to the cleaning performance of the composition.
It is therefore desirable to provide limestone removal compositions in the form of self-thickening systems. Self-thickening systems have been described, for example, in EP-A-0518401. In these systems, the thickening effect is obtained by the combination of an anionic surfactant, a non-ionic surfactant and an electrolyte. It has now been found that such systems are not optimal for limestone removal compositions. In fact, this approach does not seem to provide viscosity in the strongly acidic system unless very high levels of ingredients are used and strong negative effects on limestone removal have been observed. Furthermore, the stability of anionic surfactants in such strongly acidic conditions can be problematic.
It has now been found that a stable self-thickening effect could be obtained in an acidic medium without affecting the limestone removal efficiency of the composition by combining a quaternary ammonium salt surfactant with a non-ionic surfactant. This solution has the additional advantage that the thickening system also performs a detergent function.
In addition, it has been found that the compositions according to the present invention have the advantage that the use of the cationic quaternary ammonium salt surfactants described below in combination with an acid results in significant disinfection benefits. This benefit is particularly useful in a composition intended primarily for use on bathroom and kitchen surfaces.
In dem '688-Patent werden nichtionische Tenside als eine Alternative zu den quarternären Ammoniumsalzen dargelegt.GB 2071688 teaches that quaternary ammonium salts can be used to thicken an acidic solution provided they are combined with an amine or amine oxide. In the '688 patent, nonionic surfactants are set out as an alternative to the quaternary ammonium salts.
Die quarternären Ammoniumtenside gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung sind nicht beschrieben.US-4612135 describes a sanitary cleaning composition which comprises phosphoric acid, oxalic acid, a nonionic surfactant and a fluorinated quaternary ammonium surfactant. The quaternary ammonium surfactants according to the present invention are not described.

The compositions according to the present invention comprise from 0.5% to 15% by weight of the total composition of the thickening system, preferably from 1% to 8%. The compositions according to the present invention thus have a viscosity in the range from 10 cps to 700 cps at 60 rpm at 20°C, preferably from 20 cps to 200 cps, most preferably from 30 cps to 60 cps.
The selection of the most suitable thickening system depends on such factors as the target viscosity, acid concentration and intended limestone removal performance. With respect to viscosity alone, it has been found that the use of straight alkyl chains in both the cationic and nonionic surfactants provides the best viscosity increase. In the system according to the present invention, the combination of the cationic surfactant with the nonionic surfactant enables viscosity to be built up in an aqueous solution of an acid, even a weak organic acid, thereby making this system stable and substantially maintaining the limestone removal performance of the viscous solution.
A convenient way to go about determining a suitable thickening system for a particular composition is to initially determine the desired limestone removal performance for the composition, i.e. the type and concentration of acid, and prepare an appropriate aqueous solution of the acid. Various combinations of cationic and non-ionic surfactants can then be tried to obtain the target viscosity as a stable composition. By stable, it is meant that the composition does not undergo phase separation for a significant period of time in a temperature range of 0ºC to 50ºC. The most suitable system can thus be selected by trial and error.
The compositions according to the present invention may further comprise such optional ingredients as solvents, bleaches, bactericides, perfumes, dyes and the like, provided that they are compatible in the acidic medium of the composition according to the present invention.
