Description
This invention relates to golf clubs and, more particularly, to irons having a rear cavity, wherein the rim outside the rear cavity is modified so that the geometric center of the front of the club head coincides with the center of mass of the club head.
The document US-A-3 693 978 discloses a wooden golf club, whereby the center of mass of the entire club (head and shaft) is designed so that it coincides with the geometric center of the club head. This design implies that the center of mass of the golf club head must deviate from the geometric center of the golf club head in order to balance the weight of the shaft and to bring the center of mass of the shaft/head combination into line with the geometric center of the head.
Irons are divided according to the loft angle. Irons with small loft angles, i.e. 20º to 30º, are classified as long irons, while irons with large loft angles, i.e. 40º to 50º, are classified as short irons. Typically, irons are numbered from long to short, i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW (Pitching Wedge), SW (Sand Wedge) and LW (Lob Wedge).
The club head of an iron has a front surface for striking the golf ball and a back surface. The back surface may have either a cavity or a smooth surface. Each front surface has an area related to a sweet spot. The sweet spot is that area on the front of a golf club which, when striking a golf ball, produces the most favorable results. Irons with back cavities have larger sweet spots than irons with closed backs. There have been proposals for changing the size and position of the back cavity, see U.S. Patent Nos. 1,715,601, issued December 29, 1987 and 4,848,747, issued July 18, 1989. US-A-4 848 747 relates to iron golf clubs and is concerned with providing a cavity on the back of the clubhead to adjust the center of gravity of the clubhead away from the geometric center of the club.
However, none of these sources teach how to align the geometric center of the front of an iron with the center of gravity of the clubhead by changing the perimeter weight of the back of the clubhead.
It has now been discovered that an exceptionally playable back cavity iron can be made by adjusting the edge weight outside the cavity on the back of the iron so that the center of gravity of the clubhead and the geometric center of the front of the clubhead coincide.
It is important to the present invention that the weight adjustment be in the rim of the clubhead and not in the cavity itself. This allows for better heel-toe balance than adjusting the weight in the cavity itself. It is particularly desirable to maintain a flat cavity floor. This can be achieved by maintaining a constant distance between the face and the cavity floor over a substantial portion of the cavity.
In addition to adjusting the perimeter weight in the back of the club head, the sleeve length of the irons is essentially maintained in length, preferably within ±0.01 inch (0.254 mm) and more preferably within ±0.005 inch (0.127 mm), while the ratio of the total proportion of the club weight in the toe and ground area is greater in short irons than in long irons.
The geometric center of the front surface is determined by finding the center of the blade length along the ground surface and moving upward a distance approximately equal to the radius of a golf ball from about 1/2 inch to about 1 inch (about 1.3 to about 2.5 cm). More preferably, the geometric center of the front surface is determined about 0.8 to 0.9 inches (about 2.0 to 2.3 cm) above the center of the blade measured along the ground surface.
To produce an iron in accordance with the present invention, it is preferred that the offset of the club head for long irons is larger than in short irons, preferably decreasing progressively from long irons to short irons. It is known in professional circles that offset is the distance from a contact plane to the front of the sleeve parallel to the front edge of the club to the front edge. The gradation of the offset from the long to the short irons contributes to the design of the iron. The larger offset in long irons helps to keep the player's hand in front of the ball during the shot and supports a steep angle of impact to make the ball rise faster.
The launch angle is also preferably changed. It is well known in the art that the launch angle is the distance between the ground and the line that connects the leading edge of the ground surface to the trailing or effectively rear edge of the ground surface. Preferably, long irons have a negative launch angle, while mid irons have a neutral launch angle and short irons have a positive launch angle. The launch angle helps to improve playability, launch angle and spin rate.
