Druck, vorzu. sweise stark vermindertem 9
Process for the production of compact magnesium from magnesium dust The subject of patent 635 387 is a process for the production of compact magnesium. , consists of a magnesium dust, which has been set by electro-thermal reduction of magnesium compounds with carbon vapor in freedom and by sudden exhaust cooling of the vapors formed won the characterizing feature that the Magnesiumstauh in an inert gas atmosphere at a Above the Schmelzpunkt'des metallic magnesium lying temperature under reduced pressure. at times greatly reduced 9 pressure until the particles flow together. According to a special embodiment, the magnesium dust is converted into compact metal by distilling out the metal in a stream of an inert gas.
Druck erreicht.According to the invention, the same aim is achieved in the above
special embodiment by distillation at atmospheric pressure or elevated pressure
Pressure reached.
(633 bis 651') #is. gegen 95o' C, also gerade in dem Temperaturintervall,
der Siedetemperatur des reinen Magnesiums beim betreffenden Druck arbeiten;
d.
The reduction of magnesium oxide with coal produces carbon oxide which, when the vapors condense, causes partial reoxidation of the metallic magnesium with the formation of carbon. Magnesium oxide and carbon are therefore contained in the magnesium dust, which is obtained in this way, as unavoidable accompanying substances. During the processing of the magnesium dust by vacuum distillation on a larger scale, the unexpected fact has now arisen that these accompanying substances have a tendency to hold the metal by adsorption, as a result of which boiling delays occur. During the vacuum distillation, the material must therefore be heated to higher temperatures than the boiling point of pure magnesium at the pressure applied. However, as the drawing shows, the vapor pressure curve of magnesium shows the peculiar behavior that just above the melting point (633 to 651 ') #is. Towards 95o ' C, i.e. just in the temperature range that comes into consideration for vacuum distillation, relatively large temperature differences correspond to slight changes in pressure. In order to achieve the overpressure which is necessary to prevent delays in boiling, one must therefore work considerably above the boiling point of pure magnesium at the pressure in question; d. H. that the lowering of the boiling point by the vacuum cannot be exploited and thus the main advantage of working in a vacuum is lost.
At temperatures above 95 ° C the vapor pressure curve of the magnesium begins to flatten out sharply; from around this temperature onwards, relatively small changes in temperature are associated with much larger changes in the vapor pressure. The increase in vapor pressure from about 150 to 10000 mercury corresponds to a boiling point increase of only about 95o to 1125 ° C. The boiling point of magnesium at atmospheric pressure is therefore only slightly higher than the working temperature that is practically required for vacuum distillation of magnesium dust contaminated with magnesium oxide and carbon in order to prevent delays in boiling. From it. the result is that the difficulty which is generally associated with working in a vacuum, also in large-scale operations, and which is multiplied by the high working temperatures under consideration, can be avoided without any disadvantage. In fact, the attempt has con- firmed that the distillation of the contaminated magnesium dust under atmospheric pressure or slightly above may be used in an inert or reducing gas atmosphere in place of the vacuum distillation without interference from bumping and without significant performance degradation. This much simpler way of working has the advantage of changing the 'chemical-physical conditions in favor of separating the magnesium from volatile accompanying substances', in particular silicon and aluminum, in that the boiling points of the magnesium on the one hand and these volatile accompanying substances on the other hand are further apart at atmospheric pressure than is the case at reduced pressure and especially at considerably reduced pressure.
diesem Verfahren in verschiedener Hinsicht überlegen gezeigt.
Between the present process and the process according to patent 635,387 there is the suggestion made later to bring the magnesium dust together without the application of reduced pressure by heating it in an inert gas atmosphere to a temperature close to the boiling point of metallic magnesium. In this way the aim was to remove the oxide skin from the individual metal grains by local distillation processes without actual distillation of the dust, so that the exposed droplets can unite. In practical operation, however, vacuum distillation has proven to be superior to this process in several respects. If we now switch to the distillation at atmospheric pressure or overpressure, "this is only apparently an obvious step. The apparently simplest solution, which could only be reached on the basis of the findings presented above, is the final link in a long chain of experiments.
