Method of making a plastic mass The present
Invention relates to plastic compounds, cement o. The like. And rubber latex
o. The like. Contained, which as road construction material or in the production of floors,
Walls and the like can be used, as well; on ships, for example, as
Intermediate layer between the steel frame and the wooden planks of the deck.
So far, in the technical production of plastic masses
This type of latex or the like is used to ensure hydration and the
Set the cement to provide necessary water, although already
various proposals made with regard to the addition of water to cement
have been. It is well known that latex coagulates rapidly in an acidic medium,
and one therefore has in practice the use of cement containing high silicic acid
avoided, rather high-alumina cement was used. Such types of cement are
however, relatively expensive, and their color moreover prevents clear coloring
of the products, even if pigments are introduced into the masses.
The basic idea of the present invention is that
Hydrate cement before the latex is mixed with it and it has been found
that despite the addition of enough water to the cement to allow normal setting
to bring about that the cement still absorbs enough of the aqueous part, the latex:
in order to cause the same in fiber form to solidify without disturbing the
normal setting of the cement may occur. So the mass binds with the practically
unkoa, guli, er ten latex, whereby the cement is hydrated in the normal way,
although the setting of the same can also be delayed.
Um: that is, a plastic mass of the type in question according to
.of the invention is hydraulic cement or lime mortar or gypsum mortar
formed into a homogeneous mixture with so much water,
at least that
sufficient to bring about complete hydration, but this amount
by no more than 100 per cent, and then before the setting has taken place
has latex or some other colloidal dispersion of natural or synthetic
Rubber, which is colloidally dispersed in a suitable medium, added,
whereby the setting takes place without merlp:, borrowed coagulation of the latex. D, ex '
Cement made with such a limited amount of water resembles a stiff one
Paste and is not about as runny as mud.
The latex, of natural origin or concentrated or if desired
can be pre-vulcanized, must be used in colloidal form. Such forms
v of latex, such as coagulated or precipitated latex, cannot be used and
are accordingly not included in the present invention. It was surprising
found that, far from delivering a weaker product like this
the method according to the invention might have been expected
delivers a stronger product. The most important advantage, however, is that
by using enough water to set the cement in the starting mix
the risk of undesired coagulation of the latex or the like is largely reduced
and the use of Portland cement or a white cement is technically possible
will. Furthermore, it is not necessary to take the same care when mixing the cement
and to apply the latex; as it was previously necessary, so that it was for an ordinary
Worker is easier to manufacture the mass.
The amount of water necessary for complete hydration naturally depends
on the lime content of the cement and the humidity of the atmosphere; she can in
A given case can easily be calculated: when the cement and the latex are mixed
before the mixture has set, stones or the like
inert filling material can be added in the form of small pieces or as a powder.
In this case, the mixture is carefully stirred, and then it is ready for laying.
Organic fillers such as cork, wood flour and the like can also be used,
likewise fiber material. In powder form, the fillers become uniformly in the end product
distributed. Large pieces or splinters can be used to create a decorative effect
evoke: It is best to add the usual vulcanizing agents to the latex,
before @ it is mixed with the cement.
Under average conditions, the mixture of cement and water initially binds temporarily after about 3 to 5 minutes. Before this happens, the latex must be added: -The mixture then has a creamy consistency. The addition of latex has been found to delay the initial setting of the cement for a further period of about z hours; in the course of this time, the mixture is laid. There is a wide scope in the applicable proportions of cement or the like to latex or the like. Between 1/2 to 10 parts by volume of the concentrated latex can be added to each part by volume of the cement-water mixture, depending on the nature of the raw materials and the purpose for which the compound is intended. The following is given as an example: 15 parts by weight of white cement are hydrated with 5 parts by weight of water. Then 5 parts by weight of concentrated rubber latex containing the vulcanizing agents are added. Then add 3 parts by weight of fibrous filler material: It should be noted that the amounts of 15 parts by weight of cement and 5 parts by weight of water depend on the nature of the cement and the atmospheric humidity.
