Description
Firearm barrels It is known to use steel alloys which contain 0.05 to 1.3 % carbon, more than 3 and less than 1.5% chromium and 0.5 to 8% silicon for the production of gun linings. There are also heat-resistant steel alloys with 7 to 10% tungsten, 0.8 to 3% silicon and optionally up to 0.5% chromium and those with about 0.5% molybdenum, about 2% silicon and up to 2% chromium known . It is also known that steels containing vanadium or molybdenum, if they contain these elements essentially dissolved in the ferrite, have a high fatigue strength. However, it has not yet been proposed to manufacture gun barrels from the steel alloys used in accordance with the invention.
The subject of the invention is the use of such steels for the production of tubes for firearms (handguns, guns of all kinds), which in addition to about 0.7 to 2.5% silicon still i to 5% chromium and at the same time at least o, i% of one or more of the carbide-forming elements tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, Titanium, tantalum contain, the content of chromium and the other carbide-forming Elements total up to io%. Pipes of the specified type prove themselves namely excellent, against the: n corrosive and explosive stresses, as they occur during the operation of the items specified above. As particularly, suitable the use of steel alloys has been shown to contain about 0.2 to 0.8% carbon, 0.7 to 2.5% silicon and 1.2 to 5% chromium and 0.15 to 1% molybdenum, o, i up to i% vanadium, 0.5 to 4% tungsten, individually: or, mixed or contained in especially about 0.5% carbon, 45% silicon, 1.5% chromium, 0.3% molybdenum and 0.2% vanadium.
The specified steels can be quenched and tempered for strength and yield strength usrv. to influence in the desired sense.
